What is windows update cleanup

Disk cleanup for Windows 10 cumulative updates

This article provides an update to clean disk space for Windows 10 cumulative updates, and it fixes some disk space issues. Before you install this update, note the restart requirement.

About this update

Because Windows 10 updates are cumulative, content from previous updates remains on the hard disk and unnecessarily consumes space. This update forces the removal of outdated cumulative updates and enables the regularly scheduled component cleanup task to free up disk space.

Note Disk space is not reclaimed immediately after you install this update.

Symptoms

After Windows 10 cumulative updates are installed, you experience a reduction in available disk space that is greater than you expect. A lack of available disk space can prevent systems from receiving future Windows updates or upgrades.

File Information

The English version of this update has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table.

Microsoft Windows Update Cleanup tool.

Windows Update Cleanup

Enter.
Windows Update Cleanup.

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Community Forum.

As per the issue description, I understand that Windows shows 5.25GB of Windows Update files ready to be removed and you run disk clean up tool but it does not erase Windows Update files.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue better.

Do you have Disk Cleanup Wizard add-on installed on the computer?

Have you checked if there is any pending or failed update in Update history?

It can’t clean updates that are still required, such as pending install or waiting for the app to be launched. It’s possible that some of the files were in use so they couldn’t be deleted. Did the amount of bytes to be freed decrease each time you ran it?

If you are not sure how to check which update was installed, follow the steps below

Open Installed Updates by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel , clicking Programs , and then, under Programs and Features , clicking View installed updates .

If everything appears to be fine but still the issue persists, l et’s try these methods below and check if that helps.

Method 1:

If Disk Cleanup Wizard add-on is not installed, install it and follow the steps in the article to clean up Windows Update files.

This update adds a new plugin to the Disk Cleanup wizard. After you install this update, you can use the Windows Update Cleanup option to delete Windows updates that you no longer need.

Disk cleanup Wizard add-on lets users delete outdated Windows updates on Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Method 2:

If you have this update already installed and you’ve already followed the steps to clean obsolete Update files but the issue persists, you may check running Windows Update troubleshooter and check, some of our community members have got this issue resolved by running Windows Update troubleshooter.

Download and run Windows Update troubleshooter from the link below.

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter

Hope this helps. Please let us know the results. Feel free to write us back for any further assistance with Windows, we’ll be glad to assist you.

The Windows Update Cleanup option is available only when you log on by using administrator permissions.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, right click on Disk CleanUp, click Run as Administrator on drop the drop down menu and you should see the Windows Update Cleanup option. Check the box before that option.

Dear Mann_Manohar and G. Cornell,

first i want to thank you for your replies. As for your suggestions, I have Disk Cleanup Wizard add-on installed and i ran Windows Update troubleshooter but the problem persists. The amount of bytes to be free is constant and i always run disk cleanup as Administrator. Any other idea?

This may be going over old ground.

A new function was added to Disk CleanUp in October 2013, which is not available in cCleaner. You need to change existing settings to take advantage of the new function. Type Disk CleanUp in the Search Box above the Start Button and press the ENTER key. Click on OK and after the space calculation you will see a window with a list of Files to delete. Use the scroll bar to the right of the window to see hidden entries further down the list. Check the boxes before Service Pack BackUp Files and Windows Update CleanUp and click on OK If you do not see Windows Update CleanUp then click the Clean up system files button. You will see savings every time after Windows has been updated but they are not as significant when it is run after the first time. You need to restart the computer to complete the process.

Is it safe to delete Windows Update Cleanup folders/files by using the utility Disk Cleanup?

1) When using the utility Disk Cleanup on my Dell Studio 1558, by default, the following files are automatically selected to be deleted: Downloaded Program Files [0 bytes], Temporary Internet Files [217 Kb], and Thumbnails [2.01 MB]. Can the other files be selected to delete by the user (me) without damaging the PC, Programs, etc.? They are: Offline Webpages [38.0 KB], Game statistic Files [12.2 KB],Temporary Files [602 KB], and System archived Windows Error Reporting [17.0 KB], and of course Recycle Bin.

2) When using the utility Disk Cleanup there is another option whereby the user (me) can «cleanup system files». By default the utility AGAIN selected: Downloaded Program Files [0 bytes], Temporary Internet Files [217 KB ], and Thumbnails [2.01 GB]. It additionally selects: Windows Update Cleanup [6.23GB] , which looks to use ALOT of SPACE that this PC could be free of!. Is it safe to delete Windows Update Cleanup, when using Disk Cleanup, without damaging the PC, Programs, etc.? The Disk Cleanup tool warns NOT TO DELETE: Service Pack Backup files, but gives no such warning about any of the other files that can be manually selected by the user (me) to delete. Thanks, Looking To Clean Up This PC, thanks for taking time to read/ reply, Sincerely, Jim Colvin

It is safe to delete those filed with cleanup, however you may not be able to reverse any Windows updates if desired after you use Windows Update Cleanup.

If your system is functioning properly and has been for a time, then I see no reason not to clean them up. I have done this on all my systems to date.

This is a new component that has been added to the Disk Cleanup utility by a recent Windows Update.

This option cleans out all of the outdated and redundant files that are installed in the Component Store (Winsxs folder).

Users have been complaining about the size of this folder ever since Windows 7 was first released.

It is safe to use and as you can see it will free up a lot of disk space.

You can get complete information about this new cleanup option and a brief tutorial on how to use it in the following article.

Update is available that enables you to delete outdated Windows updates by using a new option in the Disk Cleanup wizard in Windows 7 SP1:

Dear Lead3, You sure do not have any lead in your pants when it comes to responding to help someone, thanks very much, I think that you replied to my question within 10 minutes of posting! Actually, after installing the 31 Windows Updates on 10/09/13 I do have a PC problem, Chess Titans is flashing every so often so as to show the Screen behind it (my desktop), and it’s Icon on the Taskbar will «shuffle» a bit, along with a barley readable «Chess Titans Is Not Responding» in the top left of the screen («title bar«)! So I hesitate to delete the Windows Update Cleanup just yet! I have AutoCAD 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010 on the same PC, Word has no problem, I have not been into other parts of the Suite yet. Also the Windows Sound Icon is X’d out in RED but it does work after clicking it and moving the slide. But, this may be associated to a problem that’s been going on for a year whereby not all of the Icons I select always show up there on startup. I have another User Account on the SAME PC and Chess Titans works fine there! I WONDER ABOUT THAT!

Thanks for your thoughtful and quick reply, Jim Colvin

PS When I checked if Chess Titans was working right on my other User Account (same PC) it did work. But, I got a pop up at the bottom of Bing’s page: «Canon Easy Webprint EX BHO Isn’t Compatible with Internet Explorer and is temporarily disabled.» with 2 buttons on the right of this yellow bar 1) Check for updates or 2) Leave it disabled. I have A Canon Pixma 495 printer and it’s Program had to be updated about 6 months ago, as it was wreaking havoc on my Microsoft Word 2010, but thanks to help here at the Community I got some replies, one of them was to Update the Canon Printer Program! Who would’ve thought?

Dear Mr Vernon, Thank you very much for your prompt and thoughtful answer, I am pushed for time so I am re-iterating what I said to Lead3 (in above reply this page). Please read thru (if you have the time-LOL), AS I AM REALLY PUZZLED as to this new problem with CHESS TITANS, and my TASKBAR NOTIFICATION AREA selected Icons PROBLEM. Maybe you have a SOLUTION for these problems also.
