Как открыть DMG файл в Windows

Пользователю Windows может быть невдомек, что это за файл с расширением DMG и чем его открыть. Об этом и пойдет речь в этой небольшой инструкции.

Файл DMG представляет собой образ диска в Mac OS X (аналогично ISO) и его открытие не поддерживается ни в одной из существующих версий Windows. В OS X же эти файлы монтируются простым двойным кликом по файлу. Однако, получить доступ к содержимому DMG можно и в Windows.

Простое открытие DMG с помощью 7-Zip

Бесплатный архиватор 7-Zip может, помимо прочего, открывать файлы DMG. Поддерживается только извлечение содержащихся файлов из образа (смонтировать диск, конвертировать его или добавить файлы не получится). Однако, для большинства задач, когда вам требуется просмотреть содержимое DMG, 7-Zip вполне подойдет. Просто выберите в главном меню Файл — Открыть и укажите путь к файлу.

Другие способы открытия файлов DMG опишу после раздела про конвертацию.

Конвертация DMG в ISO

Если у вас есть компьютер Mac, то для того, чтобы конвертировать формат DMG в ISO вы можете просто выполнить команду в терминале:

Для Windows также существуют программы конвертеры DMG в ISO:

• Magic ISO Maker — не обновлявшаяся с 2010 года бесплатная программа, которая, однако, позволяет конвертировать DMG в формат ISO http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm.
• AnyToISO — позволяет извлечь содержимое или конвертировать почти любой образ диска в ISO. Бесплатная версия ограничивает размер 870 Мб. Скачать можно здесь: http://www.crystalidea.com/ru/anytoiso
• UltraISO — популярная программа для работы с образами позволяет, в том числе, конвертировать DMG в другой формат. (Не бесплатная)

На самом деле, в Интернете можно найти еще десяток утилит-конвертеров образов дисков, но почти все найденные мною показали наличие нежелательного ПО в VirusTotal, а потому я решил ограничиться указанными выше.

Другие способы открыть DMG файл

И, напоследок, если 7-Zip вам по каким-то причинам не подошел, перечислю еще несколько программ для открытия файлов DMG:

• DMG Extractor — раньше полностью бесплатная программа, позволяющая быстро извлечь содержимое файлов DMG. Сейчас на официальном сайте есть две версии и основное ограничение бесплатной состоит в том, что она работает с файлами размером не более 4 Гб.
• HFSExplorer — эта бесплатная утилита позволяет просматривать содержимое дисков с файловой системой HFS+, используемой на Mac и с ее помощью вы можете также открыть файлы DMG без ограничения по размерам. Однако, для работы программы требуется наличие Java Runtime на компьютере. Официальный сайт http://www.catacombae.org/hfsexplorer/. Кстати, у них же есть Java утилита для простого извлечения DMG.

Пожалуй, это все способы открыть файл DMG, которые мне известны (и те, что удалось найти дополнительно) и при этом работают без каких-либо нюансов или попыток навредить вашему компьютеру.

А работали ли вы когда нибудь с Денвер? (это что то из области сайтостроения). Хочу вот узнать, неужели созданный в нем сервер (а так же сайт) будет работать только с той локалки, с которой он был первоначально установлен. Что хитро — с модема подключался и загружал сервер работает, а перешёл на смартфон по wi-fi-глухо.

Здравствуйте, с Denwer когда-то давно баловался, но это нельзя назвать работой. Вообще, вполне может быть и так, что работает только в данной локалке, правда тогда не ясно, как он у вас и с модема подключался. И, уверен, там должны быть настройки чтобы регулировать его поведение, в крайнем случае в параметрах сервера можно задать диапазон допустимых IP.

Спасибо! Отличный сайт! Очень полезная информация! Только закреплённые (fixed) блоки rem-bottom и rem-navbar уменьшают размер информативной части страницы.

День добрый! При конвертации УльтраИСО получаются битые образы.

UltraIso то конвертирует dmg в iso — но он не работает, iso не читается и выдает ошибку, при попытке применить его, и вообще, и для виртуальной машины. Там возникают 2 .img файла, и че с этим делать.

How to open DMG files on Windows

Here’s a short guide on opening DMG files on Windows and extracting data from them.

Once installed, DMG Extractor will run automatically.

Open DMG Extractor and select the DMG file you want to extract

Click the «Open» menu icon on the top-left of the window.

If the DMG archive is password protected, DMG Extractor will prompt you for its password:

DMG Extractor will load the file you selected. If you have a large DMG file, a progress bar will show until the DMG file is loaded.

Now you should be able to see all the files contained within the DMG file and navigate folders and files.

Extract the files you want

Click «Extract», next to the «Open» button. You can choose whether to extract the whole of the DMG’s contents into the same folder, or into a specific one chosen by you. If you don’t need to extract all the files, just select the files you want and on the «Extract» menu click «Selected files to…»

That’s it: extraction complete! Your selected files should now have been converted from the DMG file and saved onto your Windows computer ready for you to use.

This article describes what DMG files are, how to open one on various operating systems, and how to convert one to another archive format like ISO or IMG.

What Is a DMG File?

A file with the DMG file extension is an Apple Disk Image file, or sometimes called a Mac OS X Disk Image file, which is basically a digital reconstruction of a physical disc.

For this reason, a DMG is often the file format used to store compressed software installers instead of having to use a physical disc. You’ll most likely only see them when downloading macOS software from the internet.

This macOS disk image format supports compression, file spanning, and encryption, so some DMG files might be password protected.

Versions of Mac newer than OS X 9 support DMG files, while the older Mac OS Classic uses the IMG file format for the same purpose.

DMG is also an acronym for some technology terms that aren’t related to the Mac disk image file format, like Direct Mode Gateway and Diversity-Multiplexing Gain.

How to Open a DMG File on a Mac

DMG files are intended for Macs, so opening one on a Mac is very simple.

A DMG file is «mounted» as a drive and is treated by the operating system as if it were a physical hard drive, making it really easy to view its contents. The software you download for your Mac in a DMG format can be opened like any other file on a Mac, and then the setup program can be run to install the software.

How to Open a DMG File in Windows

A DMG file can certainly be opened in Windows, but that doesn’t mean you can actually use anything you find within it.

For example, say a DMG file isn’t just storing compressed files like images and videos but is instead holding a software program. You can extract/open the DMG file in Windows using one of the programs mentioned below, but you can’t actually execute the program and use it like you would another Windows application. To use the same program in Windows, you need to download the Windows version, not the Mac DMG version.

However, assuming the DMG file just contains files like images or videos (which are likely in a format that’s also compatible with Windows), or you want to just see what’s inside the DMG file, you should have no problem using one of the below programs to view them.

Windows can open a DMG file with any compression/decompression program that supports the format. PeaZip and 7-Zip, both free, support opening DMG files in Windows.

If you have trouble opening DMG files by double-clicking them, even if you have PeaZip or 7-Zip installed, try to right-click the DMG file and use the context menu. For example, 7-Zip opens DMG files via 7-Zip > Open archive.

DMG Extractor (the paid version) is helpful if you need to do more with DMG files than just uncompress them.

SysTools DMG Viewer is great if all you want to do is look to see what’s in the DMG file. Catacombae HFSExplorer can view DMG files on Windows, too (and Linux), but also lets you create new DMG files. Both programs are completely free.

A free tool called dmg2iso will convert the DMG image file to an ISO image file, which is much more usable in Windows. If you need to mount a DMG file in Windows, but don’t want to convert it to ISO first, a few programs do support this, like WinCDEmu, Virtual CloneDrive, and Pismo File Mount Audit Package. Newer versions of Windows support ISO mounting natively.

How to Convert a DMG File

As we mentioned above, dmg2iso can be used to convert DMG to ISO. dm2iso is a command-line tool, so you may need to reference the download page for instructions on the syntax and other rules. Also on the download page is a DMG to the IMG tool if you need to convert the file to an IMG file instead.

AnyToISO works the same way as dmg2iso but is much easier to use. The program is free but only for files that are no larger than 870 MB.

Some free file converters can convert DMG files to a variety of other archive formats, like ZIP, 7Z, TAR, GZ, RAR, and others. CloudConvert and FileZigZag are two notable examples.

To convert DMG to PKG (a macOS installer package file) requires that you first extract the contents of the DMG file and then build a new PKG file using that data. See this tutorial on the Spirion Support Portal if you need help.

You cannot convert DMG to EXE if you want to use the DMG file in Windows. DMG files are for Mac and EXE files are for Windows, so the only way to use a DMG program on Windows is to download its equivalent from the developer (if one exists); there aren’t any DMG file to EXE file converters.

Again, just because you can extract a DMG file in Windows, or even convert a DMG to a Windows-readable format, doesn’t always mean that the contents of the DMG file will suddenly become compatible with Windows. The only way to use a Mac program or a Mac video game in Windows is to download the Windows-equivalent version. If there isn’t one, then neither converting nor extracting a DMG file will be of any use.

If you want to make a bootable DMG file, you don’t have to worry about converting it to a USB format with any of the tools mentioned above. The whole DMG to USB process is possible with a tool like TransMac. Just right-click the USB drive in that program and choose Restore with Disk Image, and then you can boot from the USB drive to run the DMG program.

Still Can’t Open the File?

If none of the techniques mentioned above have been helpful in opening the DMG file in Windows, macOS, or Linux, there’s a really good chance that you don’t really have a DMG file. This might happen if the file extension has been confused for DMG.

For example, the DGML file extension looks a lot like DMG even though the two are unrelated. The former is used for Visual Studio Directed Graph Document files and opens with Microsoft’s Visual Studio.

GMD is another example of a similar looking suffix that’s reserved for GameMaker Program Code files and GroupMail Message files. Again, neither formats are related to the DMG Mac file format, so if your file really ends in one of those extensions, you need GameMaker or GroupMail installed in order to use the file.

Though MacOS and Windows are pretty similar when it comes to performing basic tasks like web browsing, watching Netflix, and writing up documents, there are some major differences in how each operating system reads, writes, and installs files and applications.

While Windows devices use .exe files in order to “execute” an action, MacOS has its own special file types that allow it to perform all sorts of tasks. Of course, if someone gives you a .dmg file and you work primarily within Windows, you may be concerned about how to actually open these drive images on your computer. While Mac OS allows you to navigate to the drive within Finder in order to mount the file like a removable drive, Windows may run into some issues—especially since Windows wasn’t designed to read and use .dmg files in the first place.

In this guide, we’ll be taking a look at how to use .dmg files with Windows so that you’ll be able to, at the very least, view inside the drive to gain and possibly retrieve information. Let’s dive in!

How to Open a DMG file in Windows 10

To open a .dmg file in Windows 10, we turned to 7-Zip, an open-source tool that can be used to extract files on Windows. Alternatives like DMG Extractor should also be considered if 7-Zip doesn’t work for you.

Follow these steps to open a .dmg file with 7-Zip:

1. Download and install 7-Zip or an alternative extractor.
   
2. Right-click the DMG file in Windows Explorer and select Extract.
   
3. Extract the file to a safe location and wait for it to complete.
   
4. Open the folder 7-Zip created to browse the contents.
   

Although this won’t help you do much with the content within the drive, you can use 7-Zip to view the content within the disk image itself. If 7-Zip struggles to extract your file, try right-clicking and using the Open Archive option.

How to Convert a DMG file into an ISO

If you absolutely need to be able to access the contents of a .dmg file on your Windows computer, you’ll need to convert it into an ISO file. This allows you to mount it as normal using the ISO program of your choice.

To do this, you’ll need a conversion tool like AnyToISO, WinArchiver, or PowerISO. Most ISO converters aren’t free, so be aware that you may need to use a Lite version of the app or upgrade to a paid version in order to access the file contents.

AnyToISO

First, let’s take a look at how to convert files with AnyToIso.

1. Download and install the converter.
   
2. Right-click the DMG file and select ‘Convert to …iso’. The filename will depend on what your DMG file is called.
   
3. Tell the program where to store the ISO and select Start.
   
4. Allow the program to convert the file. It can take as little as 10 minutes or much longer depending on the size of the file and speed of your computer.

PowerISO

PowerISO is another effective application for converting DMG files to ISO files.

1. Download and install PowerISO.
   
2. Open it, select Tools >Convert.
   
3. Set the DMG file as the source and set a destination.
   
4. Select OK to begin the process.

Once the process completes, you should be able to see what the file contains and check file sizes and properties. However, you won’t be able to do anything with the contents as they will not work in Windows.

Final Thoughts

You won’t often come across DMG files in Windows unless you’re trying to create a hackintosh or Apple virtual machine. However, if you do happen to come across one of these files, you now know what to do with it!
