Question: Q: wifi dongle for sierra?
Anyone know of a USB wi-fi adapter that’s compatible (or has drivers compatible with) OS Sierra (10.12)?
The airport/bluetooth card on my mid-2011 MacBook Air is very poorly!
I’ve just had a very stressful couple of hours with an EDIMAX dongle, that simply refuses to play at all.
(As an emergency physician, I can offer free, completely uninsured medical advice in return. But no consultations.)

Jatin , as I wrote before, the DLink DWA-131 works with Sierra, with its own drivers for 10.11.

I recently got a new MacBook pro and needed to connect from the marina in a boat that is a little farther out in position. I had used a Alfa Networks external marine Alfa UBDo- nt Wireless Long-Range Outdoor USB 802.11n 2.4Ghz 2000mW 12dBi Antenna and thought I would again but no drivers or software was available. I emailed the company and they send me a link the next day to a bunch of there d evices that now work with Mac osx Sierra. I have Mac OSX 10.12.3 and it works fine.
I hope the links I have listed will still work but I have used them as of 02/27/2017

I have had good luck on my MacBook pro with one from Anewkodi ( http://anewkodi.com/?product=network-adapter-usb-wi-fi-dongle-adapter-600mbps ) with an external antenna (wireless ac) if you don’t mind that — RTL8812au wireless ac chipset dongles (several of them are out there) — What I wanted was one that would work for my MacBook pro that triple boots via bootcamp with Sierra, Windows 10, and Linux. There is a mini-cd disk that comes with it but the latest driver download is on the site in the product description — The mac driver says 10.11 (not 10.12) but I installed it and I am working fine in Sierra. The linux driver provided is too old but doing a little research online and reading comments on pages I found one here that worked for Ubuntu 16.0.4: https://github.com/Grawp/rtl8812au_rtl8821au. Amazon and other online sources have good prices for it. I haven’t tried other dongles but this one seems to work fine.

Hi there; thanks for the information. I was thinking about ordering this for my MacBook pro Early 2013 model. do you know if it will work with Sierra 10.12.3? Thanks, James

I am using it and that same version of Sierra now. I have both an early 2011 model MacBookPro and also a Mid 2016 model. Both work fine.

Thank you for the quick reply! I appreciate the information. I am going to order one from Amazon. my current wifi chip in my MacBook only supports dual band wireless N. I have gigabit broadband speeds so I am hoping to get better wifi speeds using this 5Ghz band. there just aren’t many options out there as far as wifi dongle’s go. again thanks!

You are welcome — since it is usb I have been considering getting them for desktops as well where I don’t have ethernet access.

Не работает WiFi? USB WiFi адаптер для Mac!
Mac?
Mac

There are many, but USB WiFi not recommended. The user interface is poor, and the drivers tend to cause instability, especially with sleep.
See FAQ for WiFI recommendations.

Note that USB WiFi is not recommended. But any one with drivers for 10.11 will work.
I have used an EDIMAX EW-7811Un with success. Don’t know if the drivers are current for 10.11. You should check the prospective OEM website.

Can someone give me the name of a wifi usb dongle that is compatible with OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
If you or anybody is still interested in this topic, I’m having pretty good results with my D-Link DWA 140 on El Capitan 10.11.1
I tried it previously on 10.6.8 and, yet I managed to make it work, it was highly unstable and never let me use any network different from the one in my house. It worked perfectly on Windows, so I ended up installing a VM with Windows XP and sharing the internet connection into Mac OS X, but as you can imagine, this took plenty of resources giving as a result a weak signal and a lot of trouble to get connected.
However, recently I decided to give it a go on El Capitan and, to my surprise, it is working like a charm! The signal strenght is as high and continuous as it is on my Windows partition, from which I get connected using the built-in WiFi PCI card.
You can download the driver for Mac OS X from here:
When you install the driver you’ll see that it is for Mac OS X 10.5 (or higher), but, at least in my case, it’s giving me no trouble at all. In fact, if you look up the driver on the web site on your own, you’ll see that there is available a controller for OS X 10.10, however it gave me an error when I attempted to install it.
P.S.: There is one «little» thing I don’t like about this dongle. it is a bit big and it literally blocks the USB port near it.
eeecom
I want to confirm, that the ASUS USB-N13 also work with OSX El Capitan. Just download the recent driver from the developers site, install, reboot and plug in the USB-stick. Done!
Unfortunately I also have to confirm that there is an issue with the sleep mode. After sleep you need to unplug and reinsert the hardware. But after that the network-link is back. No restart or shutdown e.g. is required to fix the problem.
PS: like in the topic obove — it´s a large dongle but comes with a shapeable extension. With that you are still able to use the USB port nearby and you also can move the stick around to get a better reception (never used that).
