General Windows 10 Mobile

As of December 10, 2019, Windows 10 Mobile users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free. Third parties or paid support programs may provide ongoing support, but it is important to recognize that Microsoft support will not publicly provide updates or patches for Windows 10 Mobile.

Only device models that are eligible for Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 are supported through the end date. For Lumia 640 and 640 XL phone models, Window 10 Mobile version 1703 was the last supported OS version and will reach end of support on June 11th, 2019. Please see the Windows 10 Mobile availability per device model for more information.

End of support means there will be no more product or security updates for the Windows 10 Mobile operating system (OS). This is in-line with our Lifecycle policy.

After the end of support, automatic or manual creation of new device backups for settings and some applications will continue for 3 months, ending March 10, 2020. Some services including photo uploads and restoring a device from an existing device backup may continue to work for up to another 12 months from end of support.

Apps are governed by the Modern Lifecycle policy and are independent of the OS Lifecycle policy. App developers (including Microsoft) may end support for an app at any time. The Store may continue to work after the end of support date.

No, the Windows 10 Mobile OS end of support applies to all Windows 10 Mobile devices.

Мобильные устройства под управлением фирменной Windows Phone и собственного производства Microsoft, не принесли дохода ни за один год существования. Итогом стало полное закрытие мобильного отдела, продажа компании Nokia и прекращение какой-либо конкуренции Apple и Google на перспективном поприще. Тем не менее порой крупные корпорации умудряются сделать очень неожиданное возрождение старых успешных идей и попыток завоевать новый спектр клиентов, что прямо сейчас и пытается сделать Microsoft, намекая на новую мобильную ОС.

Такие намеки появились в презентации «оконной корпорации» во время выступления на тайваньской техноконференции Computex. Основной упор выступления был сделан на желание поддерживать технологию передачи данных 5G, что возможно только в мобильных или гибридных ОС, но никак не в стационарной Windows 10.

Фанаты экосистемы компании Microsoft давно ожидали от нее подобных намеков. За годы отсутствия Windows-устройств на мобильном рынке потребители даже составили примерный список требований, которые они хотели бы увидеть в переосмысленной Windows 10 Mobile. Я хочу напомнить, что 10.12.2019 Майкрософт «выключает свет» в экосистеме Windows 10 Mobile. Эта дата может незначительно сдвинуться или растянуться на несколько недель, но принципиально она не изменится.

Что ожидается:
— полное прекращение работы Microsoft Store. Опыт у Майкрософта есть — был убит Nokia Store на Симбиане и S40.
— невозможность скачать/обновить карты (Windows Maps для Win 10 Mobile, Here Maps для WinPhone 8.1)
— не исключено, что отвалятся сервисы, за которые отвечает Майкрософт. Например синхронизация почты и контактов с outlook.com/hotmail.com и/или невозможность привязать телефон к аккаунту Майкрософта. Скорее всего, это произойдет не сразу, а в течение нескольких месяцев:

Бекапы можно будет делать до марта 2020, некоторые аппы (Майкрософта) тоже продолжат работать до этой даты. Загрузка фотографий и восстановление из бекапа будет работать до декабря 2020 года.

— Whatsapp прекратит работать 31.12.2019. Скайп вряд-ли протянет намного дольше (возможно, до марта 2020).

Невзломанные аппараты на WinPhone 8.1 в этой ситуации превращаются в простые звонилки в случае сброса к заводским настройкам.

Взломанные аппараты на WinPhone 8.1 и на Win 10 Mobile позволяют side loading в той или иной форме. Тем не менее, нужно уже сейчас сделать бекап контактов (я использую My Contacts Backup). Встроенная утилита Contacts and SMS backup в моем случае отваливается на первых 9-ти контактах.

Нужно установить все карты, которые потенциально могут понадобиться. На WinPhone 8.1 возможности ограничены — карты можно устанавливать только в память телефона (а ее мало), но Win 10 Mobile позволяет устанавливать карты (и приложения) на microSD. 16 GB microSD карты должно хватить.
Нужно установить из стора все приложения, которые потенциально могут понадобиться, пока Microsoft Store еще работает (не для всех есть xap/appx).
Нужно собрать все возможные xap и appx файлы для установки без стора.

Разработчик «Лампового плеера» доходчиво все написал об отключении загрузки приложений здесь, так что пока не паникуем)))

Only buy a Windows Phone if you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Is it a good time to buy a Windows Phone?

Why buy a Lumia 950 XL?

If you’re not deferred by the impending death of Windows 10 Mobile, the Lumia 950 XL is a great buy thanks to its relatively small form factor for a 5.8-inch device with a 16:9 display that isn’t bezel-less.

This phone is good to shoot pictures with. The rear-facing, 20-megapixel PureView camera has a ZEISS F/1.9 lens and a three-LED flash that captures stunning stills and 4K video, while the front-facing, 5-megapixel camera is enough for selfies and video chats.

The Lumia 950 XL comes with 32GB of included storage that can be expanded by up to 200GB with a microSD card, which is great for anyone who loves to shoot 4K video. It’s the best camera on a Windows 10 Mobile device today.

Unfortunately, those are the only stand-out features of the Lumia 950 XL in 2019. Every other non-Windows Phone flagship released in the last 12 months beats the Lumia 950 XL in all departments.

OnePlus 7 Pro

The OnePlus 7 Pro is OnePlus’s first big flagship for 2019, and wow is it something special. The pop-up selfie camera allows for a display without any bezels or notches, there are three cameras on the back, and blazing fast performance with great software. All of that, and it costs hundreds of dollars less than some competing flagships.

We outright recommend the OnePlus 7 Pro as the device to get if you’re just switching from a Windows Phone since the software is so easily customizable. You can load it up with all of Microsoft’s software and services, including the Microsoft Launcher, Your Phone Companion, Outlook, Edge, and more, and essentially turn it into a Microsoft smartphone. It also integrates nicely with Microsoft’s Your Phone app on PC.

Google Pixel 3a

Whether you get the Pixel 3a or larger 3a XL, these are two of the best mid-range Android phones we’ve seen so far in 2019. The camera performance has no competition for anything in this price range, and when you add that together with a great software package, smooth performance, and solid OLED displays, you end up with two pretty great handsets.

The Pixel 3a is an excellent pick if you’re not too keen on splashing out a lot of cash for a new Android phone, but want to ensure you have an excellent camera in your pocket. At just $399, the Pixel 3a is packing the same flagship tier camera found in the normal Pixel 3 line, providing clear and crisp photos that are unmatched in the smartphone industry. It’s also a great first time Android device for those switching from Windows Phone, thanks to its plastic shell, cheap price, and clean software experience.

If you’re not afraid of the Android ecosystem and want the absolute best of the best, you can’t go wrong with the Samsung Galaxy S10+. It has everything, even features you probably don’t need. This all comes at a premium cost too, so you know it’s a true Android flagship.

Final thoughts

Do not buy a Windows Phone in 2019. It simply is not worth it. Apps are being removed, and Microsoft is outright pulling support for the platform at the end of this year. None of the phones that run Windows Phone today are «new,» and definitely not worth your money. Get an Android. If you must get a Windows Phone, the Lumia 950 XL is your best bet thanks to its good camera, large OLED display, and removable battery with expandable storage.
