Команда разработчиков Kali Linux представила графический интерфейс для подсистемы Windows для Linux (WSL). Решение называется Win-Kex (Windows + Kali Desktop EXperience). Теперь можно запускать популярный дистрибутив для пентеста на ПК с Windows 10 в WSL2 с GUI.

Специалисты портала Bleeping Computer проверили, что это действительно работает. Они опубликовали свою инструкцию по установке и запуску Kali Linux с графическим интерфейсом для подсистемы Windows для Linux (WSL2).

Установка Kali Linux с GUI возможна только на ПК с ОС Windows 10 версии 2004.

На подготовительном этапе необходимо в ОС активировать подсистему Windows для Linux.

Потом нужно открыть PowerShell и запустить:

Далее нужно установить Kali Linux из магазина Microsoft Store.

Чтобы поменять тип установки kali-linux с WSL1 на WSL2 нужно в PowerShell запустить:

Далее нужно выполнить установку и запустить Kali Linux.

Потом нужно установить пакет Win-KeX.

Можно также установить расширенную сборку Kali Linux.

После окончание установки GUI для Kali Linux запускается командой «kex».

Seamless mode removes the visual segregation between linux and window apps and offers a great platform to run a penetration test in Kali Linux and copy the results straight into a Windows app for the final report.

Win-KeX utilises VcXsrv Windows X Server to achieve seamless desktop integration.

Prerequisites

• VcXsrv requires Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 (vcredist140). It should be included in standard Windows installations but if you receive an error complaining that it is missing, just download and install it.

Usage

Start

Start Win-KeX as normal user in seamless mode via: kex —sl

When starting Win-KeX SL for the first time, ensure to select

“Public networks”

when asked for authorisation to allow traffic through the Windows Defender firewall

This will start Win-KeX in seamless mode:

The Kali panel is placed at the top of the screen and the Windows Start menu at the bottom.

• Tip: The Kali panel might cover the title bar of maximised windows. To prevent it getting in the way you may prefer to set it to “Automatically hide” in the panel preferences.

Sound Support

Win-KeX includes pulse audio support

To start Win-KeX with sound support, add —sound or -s , e.g. kex —win -s

When starting Win-KeX with sounds support for the first time, ensure to select

“Public networks”

when asked for authorization to allow traffic through the Windows Defender firewall

Multiscreen Support

Win-KeX supports multiscreen setups:

Open “Panel Preference” to reduce the panel length, untick “Lock panel” and move the panel to the desired screen.

To close Win-KeX SL, simply log out of the session via the “Logout” button in the panel.

To optionally shutdown the Win-KeX SL server, type kex —sl —stop

Win-KeX utilises TigerVNC for its client and server components.

Usage

Start

Start Win-KeX as normal user in window mode via: kex —win or simply via kex

Session Management

• Pressing “F8” will open the client’s context menu, which allows to manage the client sessions, e.g. close the client, switch between full screen and window, etc.)
• You can disconnect from active sessions by pressing “F8” -> “Exit viewer”, this will close the client but leave the session running in the background
• You can re-connect to a session by typing kex —win —start-client

ESM mode helps to keep the Windows and Kali environments visually apart.

Win-KeX utilises xrdp server and Microsoft’s native RDP client.

Using the native Microsoft client might yield a crispier GUI on HiDPI devices. The downside is that it is not as fast as –win or –sl modes to the increased pixel density.

Usage

Start

Start Win-KeX as normal user in ESM mode with sound via: kex —esm —sound

Note: As of the time of this writing, Windows on Arm contains a bug causing massive packet loss when using “localhost” instead of the IP address to connect to the kali container. As a workaround, use the “–ip” command line switch on arm devices, i.e.: kex —esm —ip —sound The disadvantage of using “–ip” is that you have to re-enter the ESM password each time you reboot the machine, as the credentials are stored using the sessions name, which changes after every reboot. Once Microsoft fixes the bug, we can drop the “–ip” and live happily ever after without having to type in the password again.

NOTE: ESM mode is the default Win-KeX mode on arm devices so “–esm” can be omitted in all commands on this page if you are running Windows on Arm.
