Winamp

Having returned to linux after a 15 year gap (previously used Xandros, sadly no more), I’m trying to get my favourite MP3 player working under mint. Downloaded an .rpm (http://www.mywinamp.com/), converted it to a deb with alien and installed it. It shows up in software manager as installed. Problem is — how do I get at it to run it, it doesn’t show up as an application in the applications menu?

Having failed with the above, I’ve installed Winamp 5.531 via Wine and can confirm it works after a fashion. Bits that don’t work — no slider bar to move through a track, no elapsed time display (always 00:00), no volume control (have to use the OS). Also a bit flaky, sometimes starts, sometimes not. Wine is emulating Win7, haven’t tried it earlier versions yet.

I’d really like to get Winamp running natively, so would welcome any input. Have tried other MP3 players in linux, they just don’t cut it.

I find it easier to use qmmp , functions exactly like winamp, it even allows me to to use all my ol’ 2.95 skins! You can try it / install it via the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager.

I just read your post and the good reply to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run «inxi -Fxzd» from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Make sure you have installed «ubuntu-restricted-extras», and «mpg123», from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)

Audacious 3.7 (Powerful Winamp-Like Music Player) Has Received Impressive New Features And Fixes
Has 3 interface options GTK, QT, & Winamp Classic Interface , you can also use other winamp skins. The GTK interface has the most options.

Audacious 3.7 Released, Available In PPA — see screen shots in link below
http://www.webupd8.org/2015/11/audaciou . n-ppa.html

To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-plugins

Adding Winamp skins

Adding Winamp skins to Audacious is very simple. Just copy your skin file (.zip, .wsz, .tgz, .tar.gz, or .tar.bz2 file) to either

/.local/share/audacious/Skins (affect your user only) or /usr/share/audacious/Skins (affects every user), and then you can browse and select it from Skinned Interface tab in Preferences. Another way is dragging the skin file directly into the list view of available skins.

Hope this helps .

As you can see from my previous post and the links in it, and other user replies, Audacious version 3.7 is a great music player with the ability to easily use a Winamp interface with Winamp skins, and can do a whole lot more. You can also create your own Winamp «skins», if you want to use your own pictures (I do not know how to do this yet, but I know that you can).

FYI-1: There are a lot of really excellent Linux music players and music manager programs that you can use without using the Linux «Wine» system.

There are some great posts in this forum on music players and music managers, if you search for them. My favorite music application is still the superb «Amarok» music player manager. But, I have more than one music player application installed, because of variety, and because some have features that are not available, or work a little better or differently, in other players. That, and I can help other Linux mint users regarding this topic. I have Amarok, Audacious 3.7, Yarock, Tomahwak, VLC, SMplayer, and StreamTuner2 (for additional streaming stations).

A couple other posts on Music Players and Music Managers:

FYi-2: I do not recommend using «Wine», unless you have to. Although «Wine» is a great system for running MS Windows programs in Linux, I just do not see the need for it when there are excellent Linux alternatives for almost any application programs from MS Windows or Mac systems you can think of, just ask the people here in this forum, or search the Internet. The only people I know of that may want, or need, to use it now are usually Gamers for certain games that have not yet made it to the Linux systems or the «Steam» system. People that want to view streaming videos, or online TV, where certain websites are locked into MS Windows browsers and such, can now use Linux (& cross platform) Multi-Media Servers and players, like Kodi (xbmc), Plex Home Theater, Navi-x, Showtime, etc. instead of using FireFox in Wine, or the good «User Agent» browser plug-in, or something like that. «Wine» just adds more layers of programs that use system resources and memory, and if you do not secure it, then it opens up your system to more MS Windows security issues that a standard Linux system does not have to be concerned with.

Посоветуйте аудиоплеер для Debian, похожий на AIMP\Winamp?

Audacious.
