original title: Bugcheck code 278 Probably, update the video driver, downgrade the driver (if latest update doesn’t work), or remove and reinstall the current driver. Update the firmware, downgrade the firmware (if latest update doesn’t work). Ensure you’re using the latest BIOS for your motherboard as well. If you’re overclocking anything, stop doing so. Do you have alternate video hardware you can try? For dealing with Blue Screens, general guidance follows: Consider running chkdsk on all partitions. Let chkdsk complete on each partition and see if that helps. It can be helpful to use Driver Verifier. To enable Driver Verifier. start->verifier.exe->OK->Create standard settings- >Next->select driver names from a list->Next->sort by Provider->select all non-Microsoft drivers->Finish, and OK your way out of the dialog. Then, reboot and use the system as you normally would, and wait for a problem. In the event that the system does not boot completely after enabling driver verifier, boot into Safe Mode and run driver verifier, and tell it to delete the changes. Wait for a bugcheck to occur after enabling verifier as described, and then upload it to your SkyDrive, and provide a link. Also consider running SFC /SCANNOW. If you boot into safe mode, do you still experience bugchecks? What about if you do a clean boot, or device clean boot? Consider testing memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic or memtest86. Note that memory that passes tests is not necessarily good memory — it just hasn’t failed a test. Consider systematically eliminating RAM from the system — run with a couple of modules for a while, and see how things go. Then try the other modules. Other common suggestions include ensuring drivers are up to date (including video drivers), as well as ensuring that you’re using the latest BIOS. Bugcheck code 278. Restart when waking from sleep.I know this issue has been discussed heavily already, but previous postings revolve around two updates (KB4038788, KB4041676) as the cause. These updates were associated with older versions of Windows 10. My Asus AIO PC is running version 1803 ( the very latest, I believe). The video is Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 4gb (latest driver). 12Gb memory, 128 Gb SSD and 1 terabyte disk. I have done check disk (chkdsk), memory check (mdsched.exe), uninstalled video drivers, installed older versions of video drivers, all to no avail. No errors were indicated anywhere. My symptoms are as follows. When a scheduled task (mine, OEM, or windows) wakes the PC from sleep mode, a restart gets performed. When a wake up is triggered by pressing any key or moving the mouse, the PC wakes up fine with no issues. Seems to be 100% repeatable. Since the key press wakes up with no issue, seems like this must be an OS (or graphics driver) software issue. I would be grateful for any help Microsoft or other users could offer. The event log shows critical error: Bugcheck code 278: Replies (6) This type of issue is one of the hardest to pinpoint the exact cause. Usually, it is caused by a power saving feature of the hard disk or motherboard (while the computer is asleep) or the chipset not being able to wake up a certain component from sleep. As such, we recommend that you check if you have the latest drivers from your computer manufacturer especially the chipset, SATA controller and USB drivers (you can find these on ASUS website). Additionally, a BIOS update can resolve power related issues. As such, we recommend that you reach out to or visit ASUS’ support for additional help in updating the BIOS of your computer. Finally, you might be experiencing this issue due to a damaged installation. In line with this, we suggest that you use the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tools to check for any corruptions. For steps on how to run these tools, you may refer to the following link: Using System File Checker in Windows 10. Let us know how it goes so we can assist you further. Was this reply helpful? Thanks for your feedback. Thanks for the prompt reply. I will pursue your suggestions. However, it seems that the difference in behavior when waking the PC with a key stroke vs. waking it via a Task Scheduler trigger is a very big clue. You seem to be saying there is no difference in the way Windows 10 performs the two types of wake up. Can you verify that the two procedures are the same? I will post again once I have pursued all your suggestions. Was this reply helpful? Sorry this didn’t help. Great! Thanks for your feedback. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback. I have performed the following tasks, as you requested. 1. Update all drivers — I checked update status using Windows Device Manager. I realize this may not guarantee they are all current, but DM shows them to be up to date. I also visited Asus’ web site. All version numbers shown in my DM match latest driver versions on the Asus site. 2. Update BIOS — my bios shows version 503 which matches Asus web site as most current BIOS. I re-flashed anyway. 3. I had already run SFC scan and DISM, but ran them again just to be sure. No indication of errors. I re-tested and the symptoms remain the same. Searches of Nvidia’s site don’t indicate anyone else with this exact problem. I intend to post a question with their tech. support anyway. Thanks for your assistance so far. Would like to get this fixed asap so my Windows auto updates can once again run at inconvenient times 🙂 Just kidding. Was this reply helpful? Sorry this didn’t help. Great! Thanks for your feedback. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback. We appreciate the update, Fred. Bugcheck code 278 indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed. It is possible that the display driver cannot load properly after waking up. The difference between keystroke vs. waking via a Task Scheduler trigger is because there are different sleep states and the computer might be in a different sleep state when waking via a trigger. Let’s continue troubleshooting by disabling fast startup. Here’s how:
