How to check what Windows 10 build you are on in two easy steps

Many users of Windows 10 have a solid idea of which build they are on. In fact, most consumers likely do not know, and that is an OK thing. Windows 10 should be transparent, and users should not have to know the exact build of the OS they are running.

Windows Insiders, however, are a different breed. You, folks, like to keep tabs on every release and sometimes, just sometimes, you may have forgotten which build you are on. Alternatively, sometimes things update but you do not know what changed.

Luckily, you can discover which build you are for Windows 10 in two easy steps. Let’s go!

Check Windows 10 Build Version

1. Win + R

Open up the run command with the Win + R key combo

2. Launch winver

Simply type in winver into the run command text box and hit OK

That is it. You should now see a dialog screen revealing the OS build and registration information.

Another way instead of using Win + R is to (1) type in winver into the Cortana search box and (2) select the first surfaced result.

Note, if you are a Windows 10 Insider, you will likely have an expiration date for the build. No need to fret over this as you can always stop getting insider builds and your OS will revert to a non-expiring edition. In theory, Microsoft is going to keep updating Windows 10 through the Insider Program and this date will continually get pushed back.

Also, as an interesting observation, I noticed my OS shows Windows 8 at the top. Microsoft’s Gabriel Aul notes that this is just a bug and most users will see Windows 10 or even just Windows at the top.

Finally, I am sure many of you have noticed the return of the ‘test mode’ watermark on the 10525 desktop. For Insiders, this is also the easiest way to check your build number 😉

Windows 10 Build 14965 – Виртуальный тачпад, Sticky Notes, Редактор реестра

Новые сборки появляются почти каждую неделю, но зачастую бывает, что сборки не сильно то и отличаются по функционалу от предыдущей, как например эта. Или все же нет? Есть функции, которые не особо то и нужны среднестатистическому пользователю, а есть лишь только файлы, которые намекают на тот или иной функционал в последующих сборках. Ну ладно, хватит демагогии, приступим к перечислению новых функций сборки 14965.

Первым делом хотелось бы отметить появление виртуального тачпада, который позволяет управлять внешним монитором без использования мыши. Ранее, если выводилась информация с планшета на экран монитора, то требовалась обязательное периферийное устройство. Теперь и это не нужно, а можно управлять вторым экраном с планшета, превратив его в тачпад. Для этого требуется в Центре уведомлений выбрать функцию Project, после чего вы сможете управлять внешним монитором с планшета.

Обновлено приложение Sticky Notes оно же Заметки. Расширен функционал Insights, благодаря поддержке новым языкам, добавлено распознавание электронной почты, номеров, url-ссылок и котировок акций. Insights можно активировать, нажав на значок шестерёнки снизу слева окна заметок.

Обновлен функционал Windows Ink, который хранит у себя в памяти 6 последних используемых приложений. Улучшена работоспособность Sketchpad. Также была обновлена настройка Pen & Windows Ink для обладателей стилуса. В общем, эти улучшения направлены, скажем так, на планшетную версию Windows 10.

В новой сборке обновлен Редактор реестра. Теперь можно в адресной строке вместо длинных выражений записывать короткие, по сути, это аббревиатура. То есть, вместо HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT можно написать HKCR. Добавлено сочетание славишь CTRL + L для фокусировки на адресной строке. Сочетание клавиш ALT + D также будет работать. Еще исправлены баги, связанные с масштабированием при работе на виртуальных машинах.

Windows Holographic Shell был обновлен в этой сборке. Довольно много новых папок и файлов добавилось в директорию C:\Windows\HoloShell.
Также здесь были замечены файлы с именем Hydrogen, который как-то относится к Windows Holographic.

Добавлены файлы, которые относятся к функции MyPeople, он же People Bar. Файлы находятся в директории C:\Windows\ShellExperiences.

EnvironmentsApp – новое приложение, которое опять связано с дополненной реальностью. WalkingCat предположил, что это ShareWorld.

Приложение Windows Holographic First Run было удалённо несколько сборок назад, но в этой сборке оно пять вернулось.
В папке Insider Hub были замечены три изображения тематики HoloLens, но самого приложения нет.

Credential Dialog Host – также новое приложение, назначение которого пока не известно. Название подразумевает рекомендационные подсказки в системе. Также есть предположение, что оно связано с вызовом диалогового окна ввода логина и пароля.

Честно говоря, я хотел больше посветить видео всяким мелочам, но в последнее момент подумал, что это не несет никакого смысла. Думаю, всем понятно, что новая сборка более стабильна и функциональна. Обновления до новых сборок отныне должны весить меньше, благодаря новым алгоритмам.

Кстати, уже на днях ожидается новая сборка и по слухам ее номер будет 14971. Ждем.

Windows 10, versions 20H2 and 2004 share a common core operating system and an identical set of system files. As a result, the release notes for Windows 10, version 20H2 and Windows 10, version 2004 will share an update history page. Each release page will contain a list of addressed issues for both 20H2 and 2004 versions. Note that the 20H2 version will always contain the fixes for 2004; however, 2004 will not contain the fixes for 20H2. The update history page will provide you with the build numbers for both 20H2 and 2004 versions so that it will be easier for support to assist you if you encounter issues.

Known issues

Certain Japanese half-width Katakana and full-width Katakana characters that have a consonant mark aren’t interpreted as the same character. When you use the CompareStringEx() function with the NORM_IGNOREWIDTH flag to compare them, these characters are evaluated as different because of an issue in the sorting rule . This issue affects all the updates starting on October 29, 2020 for Windows 10, version 20H2.

Open the Command Prompt window ( cmd.exe) with elevated privileges.

Run “reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Sorting\Versions /ve /d 0006020F /f”

Restart the computer or processes to see the full effect.

Important If you have not installed KB4586853or later on the computer, setting an invalid value in this registry might prevent the computer from starting up.

This workaround reverts the National Language Support (NLS) sorting rule to version 6.2, which is used in Windows 10, version 1909 and earlier. When sharing data between systems, consider applying the workaround consistently. If you use this workaround, conduct sufficient testing and evaluations to mitigate problems caused by different sorting rule versions on multiple systems.

“The virtual machine cannot be started because the server has insufficient GPU resources.”
