Windows 10 Cast to Device not working
The Cast to Device feature has recently stopped working on my PC. I right click on the file I want to cast, click on the device (usually my xbox one), but then nothing happens. The Cast to window used to open with the files queued to be played and basic controls over playback, but now nothing opens. I stream videos and music regularly in this manner, and it’s only been the last week or so that this has been an issue.
Update KB4056892 is my most recently installed update, and it would probably coincide with when the Cast To feature most recently worked.
Any help would be appreciated.

Issues with using the Cast to Device feature is usually happening due to a misconfigured settings. To address this concern, we suggest resetting the Streaming permissions on your computer. Follow these steps to do so:
- Using Cortana, type Windows Media Player and then click on it from the search results.
- Click on Stream and then choose Turn on media streaming.
- A Control Panel window will appear. Click on Turn on media streaming button and then click OK.
- Restart your computer and then check if the same issue persists.
If further assistance is needed, we are here to help.

We appreciate your response. To further troubleshoot your concern, we suggest that you create a test user profile. Check if you will have the same issue with using the Cast to Device function. This is for us to verify if the issue is isolated with one user profile or with multiple accounts.
To create a test user profile, follow these steps:
- Using Cortana search, type Settings and then hit the Enter key.
- In the Settings window, select Accounts.
- Select Family & other people.
- Choose Add someone else to this PC.
- Click I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
- Click Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Name the user as TEST and then provide a password.
Update us about the results.

Since we were able to confirm that this issue is not a user account issue, you can delete the test user profile that was used for isolation. Using your original user profile, install the KB4073291 update OS Build 16299.201.
Let us know if the same issue persists.

Hi — just noticed this thread. not something I’m particularly clued up about, but when you say you right click on a file — are you still getting the cast to option (and it is either greyed out — or doesn’t work) or is it just not there?
Have you tried Network Settings? You can troubleshoot network issues and if necessary do a network reset.* I find that often corrects issues with any of my streaming options (Cast To — Bluetooth — Airplay)
While in ‘settings’ also check the Devices page settings are all good.
*After resetting you will need to turn the media streaming settings back on in WMP and check that all devices are showing.
Edit — another thing that is sometimes overlooked is resetting the router — if that is on 24/7 it should be done from time to time.

I am experiencing the same problem as A.J.D. tried test account and no change. I’ve not tried installing the referenced patch. I’m having another problem with my network (missing extender connection only on win 10 laptop, but new connection with ssid name»hidden network» that can’t be accessed) since the original update so am a bit afraid that something else will go wrong.
Basically, for me the cast option is available when right clicking, as well as the Connect button when clicking on the notifications icon in task bar. However, it starts to connect and then just hangs. Never completes then comes back with error could not connect. I can cast from my android tablet without problem.
Cast to Device no longer working after Windows 10 2017 Fall Creators Update, ver. 1709
I have three PC’s running the latest Windows 10 (one desktop, two laptops) and all are connected to the same home network. Now that I allowed the latest 2017 Fall Creators Update to run on all my machines, I am having some very frustrating problems that I’ve never before had. This one, in particular, is about the Cast to Device feature.
I use this feature regularly to cast music and video to my Xbox One. For some reason, ever since this latest update, Cast to Device just doesn’t work anymore on my desktop. I right click something, select Cast to Device, and I can see my Xbox One showing in the list. I select it, and nothing. No error, no Cast to Device window pops up, just nothing at all.
Clearly, my Xbox is being found on the network. Also, this feature is still working fine on my two laptops. All machines are on the latest 1709 build, and I’ve checked all the sync options and ran the troubleshooters on all machines. I’ve verified that they all are using the same settings, but for some reason, nothing happens at all on my desktop when I select Cast to Device —> Xbox One.
What could possibly be the issue here? I never once had an issue with this, or with Edge browser favorites (another huge headache I’m having now after this update) prior to now.
I’d be glad to provide any further data if needed.

Additional information: I’ve tested streaming the Xbox to my PC via the Xbox app, and that all seems to work fine. However, when I look at Devices and Printers, I do not see my XboxOne under Multimedia Devices, or at all, and that is very strange. I also cannot seem to add it, as it won’t show up when I try. I am guessing this is part of the problem here with using Cast to Device now, but I have no idea what to do to fix it. This was all working fine, and frequently, before the Fall 2017 Creators Update.

Based on the information that you’ve provided, background program is likely causing interference. To further troubleshoot this issue, we suggest performing a clean boot . The link provides the steps on how to perform a clean boot on Windows devices. If the problem does not occur while your computer is in clean boot mode, a background program is likely causing interference.
Determine which background program is causing the issue, start by turning off all drivers, third-party programs or services, and startup items that load with Windows. If you’ll not experience the issue, turn back on half of these services to try to isolate the interfering service. If the issue is not resolved at this point, you will repeat this process until you have isolated the interfering service. Finally, if you are able to determine which specific program or service is causing the issue, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether there is a solution. You can also disable the program or service to address the issue.
Keep us updated about the result.

Hello, and thanks for the reply.
I have tried what was suggested — turning off all non-Windows services and performing a clean boot — but unfortunately this made no difference. I still have the issue, which is that my Xbox One shows up in my Cast to Device right-click menu, but nothing happens when I attempt to cast something.
I also am still not seeing the Xbox One show up under Settings —> Other Devices the way I do see on my laptops.
What else can I try?

A recent change in the configuration of your device can be one of the factors why this issue occurs. To assist you with your concern, we suggest that you perform a system restore. This option takes your PC back to an earlier point in time, called a system restore point. Restoring won’t affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made. To do this, follow the steps below:
- In the Search box, type ControlPanel and press Enter.
- On the upper-right window, under Viewby , click Category and select Largeicons .
- Search Control Panel for Recovery.
- Select Recovery >Open System Restore >Next.
- Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next >Finish.
Let us know if the solution above works for you.

I too have had a problem with cast to device since the fall creators update. Now when I right-click to cast-to-device, it opens the film and tv app (or whatever the default video player is set to) and that’s it. Nothing on the TV screen I’m casting to.
What happened to the Cast-to-device player?

If you’re having issues with Windows 10 and you cannot connect your device using the Cast to device feature. Here are 2 methods that you can perform to isolate issues related to casting. To do this, follow the steps below:
Method 1: Turn on Network Sharing
- In the Search box, type Settings and press Enter.
- Click Network & Internet.
- Click Network and Sharing Center.
- On the left-pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.
- Make sure these two items are cheked: Turn on network discovery and Turn on file and print sharing. Then click Save changes.
- Check and try to connect the device to your Windows 10 again to see if it succeeds.
Method 2: Reset the Stream Permission
- In the Search box, type WindowsMediaPlayer and press Enter.
- Click Stream >Allow Internet access to home media. Then click Allow Internet access to home media on the pop-up window.
- Click YES when prompted by User Account Control. Click OK.
- Windows Media Player pop-up again. Click Stream >Turn on media streaming. Click Turn on media streaming.
- Click OK.
- It should then be back on the Windows Media Player window. Click Stream. You should then see Automatically allow devices to play my media. This should be tick on, if not, tick on it.
- Close Windows Media Player.
- Check and try to connect the device to your Windows 10 again to see if it succeeds.
Give us an update with the outcome.

Hello again, and thanks for the continued help. I have tried this second suggestion now as well (system restore) but there is not a restore point available that will take me back to before the fall update was installed. So, my problem remains, and seems to have been caused directly by that creator’s update, because I’ve installed nothing else since that could have interfered, and made no configuration changes otherwise.
To be specific, my problem of not being able to use Cast to Device remains. I can see my Xbox One in the right click menu when I choose something to stream, and select it, but no Cast to Device window pops up at all anymore. I don’t know what else to try here. How can we troubleshoot this issue specifically, since these blanket attempts to roll back the operating system are clearly not universal.
