Microsoft promises to release the next version of Windows on July 29. Here’s an article that tells current Windows owners how to get a copy
http://www.cnet.com/news/how-to-reserve-your-free-copy-of-windows-10/
Microsoft says this will be the last «version» of Windows. Updates, bug fixes and improvements will be automatically downloaded to your Windows PC / laptop / tablet / phone. So you won’t be able to wait for Windows 10.1. However, waiting a couple of weeks for others to try the new OS on hardware similar to yours would probably be a smart idea.
Here are a couple more articles about the new OS

«Windows Updates. This is the most interesting one. In previous Windows versions, you could control how updates were installed. But those with Windows 10 Home will have updates from Windows Update made available automatically. Only Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will be able to defer updates.»
I’m sure MS will make sure they never again release a fix that breaks things.

I’d been following this until learning Media Center (WMC) had been dropped. I strongly disagree with this, when first released back in 2004 they may have over estimated it’s appeal.
2004 still saw high VHS sales, Blockbuster on every corner of Main street USA and Netflix poised to offer video on demand service over the Internet.
It wasn’t until 2006 television manufactures included QAM tuners inside their TV sets, also in 2004 Hauppauge introduces Dual Tuner NTSC/ATSC/QAM PCI Express TV tuner card. They were the only reliable source back then.
Today we have companies like Silicondust and Ceton that offer superb products that work seamless with Media Center. Computers have gotten smaller too , you can now mount an Intel NUC, or Raspberry Pi behind your flat-screen, quite frankly, these products make smart-TV’s seem silly.
Just when things (. and people) were catching up, Microsoft drops it.

Yeah, unless you actually work on your computer where you need actual programmes. I do video and audio editing for about 70 percent of my income. I rarely use «apps», except for parking payments, weather, and such things. I also prefer my work emails to be in a proper programme with a full feature set. You know, like Outlook for the desktop.
The last thing I want is my computers to be dumbed down to the level of phones. If I wanted a tablet with the same shortcomings as a phone, I would not need an actual computer. I would have bought a tablet or a physically big phone.

I still use winxp on my machine that does not connect to the internet. It works fine is not broken and does what i want it to do. A lot of the time i edit documents that are 8 to 15 thousand pages long. I tried 7 and 8 they both choked on them. Xp runs them without a hickup. I also do a lot of 3 to 4 gig video editing.
7 and 8 did not do as good as job as xp does. I have 3 digitial tv tuner cards and i do not like how they work on 7 and 8.
I use a version of 7 for the internet but that is all. All windows 8 and beyond are are just phone apps that have had the graphics expanded to fit properly on the desktop screen. If i want to use apps i will get a smart phone or a tablet not on a deaktop work machine. Just my opioion.

3-4 gigs is absolutely nothing when editing video.
As for TV cards, I have no experience to that end.
I run 8.1 on one of my computers, and I expect to upgrade the Windows 7 video editing machine too. Windows 8 (and soon 10) is capable of running desktop programmes. I rarely use «apps» except for noncritical things such as weather and parking payments. I use real desktop programmes on my 8.1 laptop as I mentioned. I don’t know where you got the idea that it is only for «apps». I even log into the desktop.

I dabble in photo editing, so Win 10 better be more «work» oriented.
I’ve heard Microsoft is finally catching on that they are the «work» OS and embracing the position in Win 10, and I’m glad to see it if it’s true. Apple can appease all the hipsters tweeting and facebooking and texting about the latest stupid fad. But when it comes time to pull up your sleeves and do something complex, technical, and meaningful, you find just about all those types sitting behind a Windows OS running on a huge Desktop, a precision mouse, full featured keyboard, and at least two 26″ monitors in front of them like the cockpit of a star-ship. (a.k.a something like my office. )
I need a powerful laptop for school soon. Windows has been my only option when considering my possibilities. Linux is cool and I like it, but I’m in a college Engineering program, and am employed in an engineering field as well. In a work/school environment, I need it to work, not play with VM’s and unsupported builds intended to throw a bone at other OS’s. I need to run stuff like Creo, Solidworks, and all the normal office programs, dumbed down apps are not an option.
I have an iPad, it’s handy as the pocket on a shirt. But it’s no computer. I still refuse to own a smartphone. I have on old school flip phone that is cheap as dirt and makes phone calls what few times I have to talk while on the go. Computers are where work lives. It may be a small segment of the overall whole, but the people getting complex jobs done use PC’s, not mobile devices. I doubt anyone at Microsoft is coding the OS using a smartphone. Save those for salesman.
Windows 10 has arrived
It’s the most wonderful thing in the world!
I hope so. I signed up for it.
I have sent my guinea pigs to test it before I try after two months.
It’s real, and it’s spectacular.
It blows windows 9 out of the water. A new era has dawned!

I have a pretty old laptop (purchased in 2010 currently running Windows 7). Do you think it would still run properly if i upgrade?
But is it better than Windows 7?
Bros,

Worth trying. It is quite lean
windows 10 rocks!! windows 10 numba wang!!
I’m waiting a day or two before upgrading. Let other people suffer the consequences first as they find drivers that have not been updated yet. But I’m definitely upgrading.
Where is my Windows 10? I signed up for it but I don’t have it yet.
Where is my Windows 10? I signed up for it but I don’t have it yet.
I got a prompt in the afternoon asking me to start the download. Microsoft is phasing the download because it is several gigabytes and if everyone downloaded at the same time it would take down all the internet today because the internet bandwidth is not big enough to handle a collective download of this size.
I signed for it within 2 min of getting the notification (I was working the whole day and saw the icon pop up on my tray at that exact moment). So if you are looking for a measure: downloads started at midnight, and I had my pc on until 4am last night and on since 10am today and I only got the download window at 4pm. and I signed in within the first 2 min.
Thank you, 70a8. I truly do appreciate the info. I will keep an eye on the icon in my tray.

Oh when it invites you to download win10 you get a pop up. You will not miss that.
Well now I’m surprised. I clicked on the tray to see if it said anything else. and it says that it has already fully downloaded win10 and I just need to install it. hmmm now I’m tempted. must fight the urge. let other guys suffer first.

Wait. My wife’s PC is continuously crashing. Not clear why.
Windows 10 November update has arrived for PCs, tablets and Xbox One
The first major update to Windows 10 is upon us. Microsoft on Thursday began deploying what’s largely considered an enterprise-focused update for the more than 110 million devices already running its new operating system. There are, however, some additional changes that everyone can take part in.
As Terry Myerson explains on the Windows Experience Blog, overall performance was a key focus of the update. For example, boot time is now nearly 30 percent faster compared to the same device running Windows 7. Cortana is also a bit more useful and is available in several new markets including Australia, India and Japan.
Microsoft Edge, the company’s replacement browser for Internet Explorer, is said to be a bit faster and more secure. A new feature, tab preview, allows users to hover over an open tab to get a preview of what’s on that website without leaving the active window. Edge can now also sync your Reading list and Favorites across devices.
Microsoft is also rolling out its new Xbox One Experience update, described as a complete transformation of the console’s operating system powered by Windows 10. As covered earlier this week, the update delivers backward compatibility with more than 100 Xbox 360 titles. Other changes include a redesigned Home screen, a new guide that allows for one-button access to top tasks, a new community section designed to make gaming on the Xbox One more social, a revamped OneGuide for media and a new Store where you can purchase games, movies, television shows, apps and music.
How to: Perform a Clean Install or Reinstall of Windows 10
Please be sure to follow me on Twitter @adacosta for the latest tips, tricks and updates in the world of Windows 10. —
Technical Level : Intermediate
Summary
If you have installed a recent release of Windows in the past 5 years, you pretty much know what it will be like to install Windows 10. In this article, we take a look at performing a clean install. This includes starting a clean install from within a running version of Windows or a hard disk/SSD with no previous Windows installations.
Details
- Perform a clean install by booting from install media (DVD or USB thumb drive)
- Perform a clean install using Reset in Windows 10 orWindows 10 Refresh Tools (Start Fresh)
- Perform a clean install from within a running version of Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10
Previously, Windows 7, Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 users needed to have either of those versions of Windows installed and activated in order to qualify for the free upgrade offer. For users who needed to perform a clean install of Windows 10 from the outset, it was a two step process of first validating the machine through the upgrade routine, ensure the Windows 10 Upgrade was activated, then proceed to perform a Reset.
Starting with versions Windows 10 1511 or later, users no longer have to go through this process.
What is the Digital Entitlement or Digital License?
When you upgrade from a previous version of Windows, what happens is the hardware, (your PC), will get a digital license. This is a unique signature of the computer which is stored on Microsoft Activation Servers. The Windows 7 or Windows 8 genuine license you were previously running will be exchanged for a diagnostics product key.
Anytime you need to reinstall Windows 10 on that machine, just proceed to reinstall Windows 10. It will automatically reactivate. The only exception where this applies is dependent on the license you upgraded from. If you change your motherboard and originally you upgraded from a Windows 7 OEM or Windows 8 OEM license, then your Digital Entitlement will be invalidated. You will need to purchase a new full version license.
So, there is no need to know or get a product key, if you need to reinstall Windows 10, you can use your Windows 7 or Windows 8 product key or use the reset function in Windows 10.
Perform a Clean Install on an Empty Hard Disk/SSD or Reinstall by Booting from Install Media (DVD or USB Thumb Drive)
Once you have your Windows 10 installation media ready, all you need to do is boot from the disc or USB thumb drive to begin setup. If you don’t have install media, see instructions: How to download official Windows 10 ISO files
Review the following guide for instructions and details about configuring your BIOS or UEFI boot settings for DVD, CD, USB or SD Card.
Once your computer is set to boot from the DVD, you should see this option. If you are installing from a retail Windows 10 USB thumb drive, you will be asked to select either 32 or 64 bit Windows 10. Learn more here
The Windows logo will appear on screen, this might be here for a while, as long as you see the animating dots, everything should be ok.
Select your Language, Time and Keyboard method then click Next.
Click Install now
Windows 10 setup will prompt you for a product key during installation a couple times. If you originally upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 click the option ‘I don’t have a key’ and ‘Do this later’ . If you have a Windows 10 product key, you can proceed to enter it.
Setup will also prompt you to select the edition you have a license for — Home or Pro. Please make sure you choose the right edition. If you choose the wrong edition, your only option will be to perform a clean install again.
The copy of Windows 10 you download and upgrade from will correspond with the edition of Windows you have installed, if it does not, this is why you might be experiencing problems activating:
- Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Core should install Windows 10 Home
- Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro should install Windows 10 Pro
Wait while setup prepares to copy files
Accept the license terms then click Next
Click Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)
NOTE : Sometimes Windows 10 setup can become confused if it see’s a thumb drive. You might get a driver missing error or something to that effect. If you do, restart setup, but this time, when you arrive at the following screen, disconnect your thumb drive then go through Custom options. When setup is ready copy files, it will prompt you to reconnect the installation source (your USB).
Select the drive then click New
NOTE : If you have multiple partitions listed, select each one (starting at the bottom), then click delete until there is only a single (one) unallocated drive displayed in the window.
Select the unallocated drive listed, click New, click Apply then OK
This will split the drive into multiple partitions, select the Primary partition then click Next.
NOTE: The System Reserved partition is where recovery files are kept for diagnostics and repairing damaged Windows 10 files; or even reinstall Windows 10.
Wait while Windows installs
When this phase of setup is complete, Windows will automatically restart then reboot into setup again.
Windows is detecting and installing your hardware. After this is complete, Windows will restart one last time.
