Windows 10 settings closes

Windows 10 Settings App Opens then Closes

Tech professional here.

So what I have is a Windows 10 build 10586.71. When the settings app opens it shows the blue splash screen and closes. I have no errors in the event log. I have run the CSSEmerg67758.diagcab tool, and the Appsdiagnostic10.diagcab tool. I am unsure when it started but it messing with Windows Updates (of which I have run the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab tool), VPN, and screen resolution settings.

The diagnostic tools report that no issues were found.

I have started an SFC scan but past that I am lost without an error.

Welcome to Microsoft community and thank you for posting your query.

Sorry for the inconvenience cause to you. I will be glad to help you with this.

To understand the issue better I would like to know, what is the make and model of the computer?

I appreciate your time and effort trying to fix the issue. Let’s try simple troubleshooting steps and check if this helps in resolving the issue. Follow the below methods.

Method 1

I recommend you to uninstall/reinstall the display driver and check. Follow the below steps:

Press Windows key + X and click on Device manager.

Locate for display adapter and click on it to expand.

Right click on the device and click on uninstall.

Once you are done uninstalling the driver, restart the computer. It will automatically install the generic display driver.

If this doesn’t help to fix the issue. I suggest you to update the display adapter driver. Skip step3 from the above steps and right click on the device and click on update.

Method 2.

If the above method did not help to fix the issue, I would suggest you to go to the computer manufacturer website and download the latest display adapter driver. If the display driver is not available for Windows 10, try installing the available driver in compatibility mode and check.

Right-click on the setup file of the driver and select Properties.

Select Compatibility tab.

Check Run this program in Compatibility mode.

Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Hope it helps. Please let us know the status.

Hi Sangeetha Sarkar;

First three options is not use since we have already tried with Microsoft Answer Tech Charisse L and she escaped while I am in midway of the well due to inability of her experience. She point out that this belongs to this issue Insider Preview

«10:45 PM Charisse: I understand that you want your PC to be fixed however this is now beyond my expertise since your running the insider preview.»

Your fourth option: I upgraded from 8.1 to windows 10. If I reset my PC then can I get windows 10 again?

Windows 10 Settings app closes when clicking Devices

I’m running the latest version of windows 10, which I’ve been tweaking/trimming for the last couple of days to resolve a few gaming issues (stutter/input lag/. ).

Quite successful but now it appears I’m no longer able to go into the Devices section of the Settings app as it closes instantly when I click on it. All the other sections of the Settings app are still working correctly.

My guess is I disabled one (or more) too many services / uninstalled a user/system app I shouldn’t have or was a little too aggressive on the privacy settings or group policies (cortana/telemetry/. ).

Also did many things manually.

I’ve tried this powershell command to restore apps, but it had no effect:

Could anyone enlighten me as to which components/services/apps/. are called when that Devices icon is clicked in the Settings to take this further ?

Hi Kahana, I’m Graeme, an independent adviser here to help.

The quickest and simplest way to recover from the settings app issue would be to restore to a point before you made the change that caused the issue. Here’s an article that explains how to perform a System Restore:

If that doesn’t help, you could try the System File Checker:

— Click Start and type cmd.
— Right-click Command Prompt and run it as administrator.
— Type sfc /scannow
— Press Enter.

Or, try reinstalling the Windows Default Apps, which includes Settings:

Please let me know how you go! Thanks!

Windows 10 Settings Window Closes

I’m trying to download and install windows updates through my Windows 10, but whenever I attempt to search for any updates via the Windows Update page through the settings function, the Settings Window crashes. I’ve tried searching for Windows Update itself, but then on the Update Window, it’s telling me that I have updates available and it’s downloading updates which seems to be stuck at 0%, then the window closes on me. I’ve tried restarting my laptop, but it doesn’t seem to work. I’ve tried the options presented here which doesn’t seem to work: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/settings-doesnt-launch-or-launches-the-store/ec439819-7ee4-4b4d-abdd-35d82e04c55f?page=1

What else can I do?

*As I am typing this, the window is up and running and hasn’t closed, but the «Downloading Updates» seems to stalling again and is stuck at 0% and isn’t telling me which updates I will be receiving.
