Windows 10 stuck in safe mode

Windows 10 stuck in Safe Mode, Can’t log in with my correct password

I am currently stuck in safe mode, unable to log in. I have access to my Microsoft account, but it won’t accept my password at the Windows 10 login page on startup. If i go on another computer, I am able to log in to my account on browser, via the wesbite. I am currently typing this up from my Dad’s laptop. How can I get out of safe mode?

Also, I was using a 4 digit PIN to login before and that also doesn’t work. I’ve tried resetting my password, but nothing works. What can i do to fix this?

This was a result of trying to downgrade my graphics driver because the current driver is causing my computer to crash. Not sure how to get out of Safe mode.

We understand your concern and we will provide the assistance required to help you resolve the issue.

As per the information that you have provided, I understand that you are stuck in Safe Mode and are unable to enter your password to you account.

I would like to inform that, you might be unable to enter your user name and password as you are stuck in Safe Mode. To revert to normal mode from safe, I suggest that you follow the steps below

1. Tab Win+R and in the dialog box enter msconfig.

2. Locate and select the Boot tab and uncheck Safe with the option that you have selected

3. Restart the computer and check.

If you are able to come out of Safe Mode, try entering your password and check if you are able to access your Desktop

Hope this helps

We apologize for the inconvenience caused.

I would like to inform that the reason why you are unable to access your desktop in Safe Mode may be because your logged into Safe Mode with minimal option instead of Safe Mode with Networking. In the networking mode, you will be able to access the desktop when you enter your password as the drivers which enable you to connect to the internet will be enabled. Whereas in the normal safe mode, your password will not be accepted.

I would suggest that on the Lock Screen, press and hold the shift key and click on the Power Icon and select Restart.

Once the computer restarts, navigate to Troubleshoot> Advance Options> Startup Settings> Restart. This will restart the PC again, in the window that follows, click on the option that will let you access Safe Mode with Networking.Once here, re-enter the password and check.

Hope this helps

I am having the same issue where I am stuck in Safe Mode and everything that I try wants to have my Microsoft account password which I have changed 3 times in the past 3 hours. It still tells me that it is not my correct password. My computer is totally inoperative at this time. I have hooked it to the internet via cable which has me on but the network but won’t come out of safe mode. I have had other issues with Windows 10 upgrade but have been living with it, but right now I am hating Microsoft. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. There is no one to talk to because it always tells me to go online and nothing I have found has helped me totally.

I have tried all the remedies that has been posted with going to the run command and typing this or that, but has soon as I do it wants the Admin password which doesn’t work no matter what I put in.

My Microsoft password has been changed a few times and it won’t let me enter any password and I also had a PIN on the login but that doesn’t work either. I have tried to even just access my files through one of the other family members logins but can only see their stuff. If I try to install or change anything it wants the Admin password which as stated above doesn’t work. We didn’t have an Admin password, I left it blank mainly for this exact reason. Now my PC is still in safe mode and we are unable to do anything.

Is there a way to get some kind of bootable disk or like a new update or something on the PC in order to let me get around this. I am not totally inadequate when it comes to working on the PC.

This is very annoying and surely doesn’t help Microsoft’s reputation. It sounds like this is a major problem and I haven’t seen where anyone has had success using the ideas posted.

Please give me something that will assist with this or a way to just reinstall Windows 10. I downloaded it so don’t have a disk.

You might try booting your machine with Windows 10 installation media.

if you don’t have Win 10 media, 8 would probably work.

At the Install screen, click on «REPAIR» on the lower left. Then Troubleshoot. Advanced..

Select Command Prompt and type in the following.

bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot

If that gives an error, use.

bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot

I tested it on my machine, and it worked.

tl;dr: BEFORE something happens, make sure that you set a known LOCAL password (not just a PIN) for your computer. Win10 setup won’t volunteer to make that happen: you need to go into Settings > Accounts > Sign-In Options and set (change) the password yourself. Then back it up somewhere safe, maybe even with a password reset disk if your computer still accepts such things. And if there is one in there already that nobdy knows and you can’t change, don’t do anything that might bollix startup!

I had the same problem with a cheap little Win 10 tablet. Troubleshooting a Windows Update caused some issues, and it ended up rebooting BY ITSELF (I didn’t ask for it, and neither did the Original Poster) into Safe Mode. Which of course wanted a local password that I did not have, since the tablet was set up with a PIN and MS Account in the first place. Recovery consisted of:

  • Download the correct flavor (32-bit in my case) Win10 to a USB stick using another computer (you have more than one, right?).
  • Figure out how to boot from USB — not trivial for my tablet as it turned out (not just a simple BIOS setting, and even getting into the BIOS took some hacking — for AMI UEFI BIOS, try hitting ESC while it’s starting). Eventually, after hacking around in the UEFI shell, I discovered that after rebooting twice with the USB stick plugged in, the BIOS recognized it and offered it as a boot option (otherwise, it was just the internal SSD or UEFI shell). Isn’t it fun when there’s no documentation and you have to go online (from another computer) and interpret the «hey try this» posts?
  • Run the new Windows installation to the screen for for «Start this Installation», look for the «Repair This Computer» option, almost hidden in the bottom corner. Click on the Repair option.
  • At this point, you get many other options. In my case, I had a recent Restore Point from before the update, and went back to that. You do have System Restore turned on, right?
  • Took a while, but it’s now unbricked.

Will need to spend some sysadmin time with the tablet now. Cleaning up stuff in general, and making sure that there’s a KNOWN (and backed up) local password for the thing.

Oh, and BTW MS «answer» people: when the question is about logging in to Safe Mode (or even normal mode, really), an answer that involves pressing Windows+R and running MSCONFIG is a total FAIL. The Windows user interface is completely inaccessible at that point. Read the question, please, and provide something more on point.

Stuck in Safe Mode and forgot password for Windows 10

Old title: Stuck in Safe Mode

I use a pin when I log onto Windows 10 and I forgot my password. I entered safe mode where the password is required and I didn’t sign safe mode on with a network, so changing my password will not work.

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

We understand the inconvenience you have experienced.

Is it a Microsoft account or Local account?

Let me first confirm that, PIN password option for login will not be enabled when you go to Safe Mode. You will only be allowed to use a Password to access your PC. If it is a Local account, then sadly you don’t have any option to fix this, unless you have password recovery disk.

If you’re concerned about, you can still able to boot your system in Safe Mode with Networking. But you’ll still need a password to reach desktop screen.

Restart your PC. When you reach the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key and select the Power button, and then select Restart.

After your PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options >Startup settings > Restart. After your PC restarts, you should see a number of options. Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with networking.

In case the problem is with Microsoft account, then you can reset the password using other computer which is connected to network. On another computer, go here to reset Microsoft account Password. Ensure to put same Email address which you see on the login screen, which resetting it.

Keep us posted if you require further assistance.

From inside Safe Mode, open a Command Prompt as Administrator

Run this command:

bcdedit /deletevalue safeboot

Then reboot your PC and it should boot to Windows normally

Start — type in —> msconfig . find at top and click on — General tab — Normal Startup — Apply / OK,

And since you did not initiate Safe Mode I would run StartUp/Automatic Repair.

Try running StartUp Repair from a Windows 10 boot disk or USB drive.
That often will work when running from the recovery environment does
not. You can try Option 5 here and run StartUp Repair to see if it helps.
You would need to make a bootable USB or DVD using the Media Creation Tool.

How to Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10
http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advance.

You can make a Windows 10 Install disk and try to use it to repair the present installation.

Make a Windows 10 Disk using the Media Creation Tool — select to install on another computer and the same version you have now. You can make a USB or DVD to boot with. Select Troubleshoot — Advanced Options — Automatic Repair.

Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool — create media then
boot with it — use method I outlined above.
