1. Is this a feature update to 1709 or some KB update? To know this —
Windows Key+I to invoke Settings > Update & Security > See which updates are getting installed. If this information is not available here > Click View installed update history to see which are the updates which are being installed

Make a note of KB number of this update.

2. Right click on Windows Start > Windows Powershell (Admin)
Disconnect from Internet
Type following (or copy and paste following) one by one and Enter

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

3. If this is a normal KB update —
You can download the updates from Microsoft Catalog and update manually. Search for relevant KB in the Catalog.

4. If this is a feature update to 1709

The best method to upgrade to 1709 is manual method i.e. download Windows ISO file and update through that.

Refer to the upgrade guide put up by Andre Da Costa, MVP in the following link to perform manual update

There are some key things in that guide which you should consider before you upgrade —

A. Create Backup Reinstall Media for Your Current Version of Windows 10 Before Upgrading to Windows 10 1703 or 1709 (This is a recommendation and you may choose not to do also)

B. At the end of the article, read this — How to prepare your computer before upgrading? Key things are

12 Things You Should Do Before Installing Windows 10
How to: Create a system image in Windows 10
How to manually backup and restore your files
How to: 10 Tips before installing Windows 10

Also before proceeding, you may like to check if your hardware is compatible with Windows 1709

What I would do if you haven’t yet is manually install Fall Creator Version 1709 by downloading and installing Media Creation Tool from this link and then choose to Upgrade This PC Now. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m. .

This the most stable method to upgrade to the new version (which you need anyway) and will bring you fully up to date with reinstalled Windows that often will solve any other problems you have.

You can use the same tool to download the ISO or create bootable media so you only need to do it once, and have the bootable media for repairs or possible Clean Install.

If there are any hurdles during the Upgrade see these steps to optimize the install as this is evidence it’s corrupted: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.

If Version 1709 causes problems go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.

If problems persist you can also roll it back within 10 days at Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and block it using the Hide Updates tool or another method here to wait to see if it matures: https://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent.

But remember that a factory or Upgrade install are inferior installs that most enthusiasts would never run in the first place because they’d expect endless issues. Most prefer to Clean Install doing a great install like the gold standard Clean install from this link which has had no reported issues: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I’ll keep working with you until this is resolved.

Windows 10 upgrade stuck at checking for updates screen.

Old title; Windows 10 upgrade

I am hung up on the «Getting Updates» screen for the installation of Windows 10. It’s been running for over a half hour and still sitting on «checking for updates: 0%». I can’t get any response from that window but I can use the computer and have active internet connection.

This is a common problem stuck downloading at 0%, 33%, 86% when updating Windows 10. And you can do follow this:

1. Close Windows 10 Update service.
a. Open Command Prompt. Start Run and type “cmd” to open Administrator Command Prompt.
b. You need to enter net stop wuauserv.
This is to stop the ongoing update service. Including the Windows update related service and the downloading service.

2. Clean Windows Update Cache files.
a. Continue type “cd /d %windir%” or “cd\windows
b. Type “rd /s SoftwareDistribution“, and then choose all files in this folder, and delete.
Tips: If you cannot to delete some of the files, reboot your computer. After you restart your computer, follow the above steps again. Then you can delete all Windows Update cache files once.

3. Restart Windows Update service.
a. To do that, enter the Administrator Command Prompt, and enter “net start wuauserv“.

4. Run Windows Update again
So this time, you will be able to download and install the Windows 10 system update smooth without being stuck.

Windows Update stuck downloading updates in Windows 10

If you find that your Windows Update is stuck downloading updates at 0 % or any other figure in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista as well, then this post will help you fix the issue.

Windows Update stuck downloading updates

If your Windows Update is showing available updates and your computer starts downloading them, it may happen that at some point it just gets stuck and stops downloading. It will show a constant figure but there will be no progress. The figure in your case could be 0%, 23%, 33%, or any other, but every time you try to download the updates, you find that they are stuck on that particular figure, even if you leave it for an hour or two. I faced this issue and my downloading was stuck at 23%, when I was trying to get Windows Insider Builds.

This is what helped me and I am sure that it could help you too. You may click on the images to see their larger versions.

From the WinX Menu, open Command Prompt (Admin). Type the following one after the other and hit Enter:

This will stop the Windows Update related Services.

Next browse to the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and delete all the files and folders inside. Press Ctrl+A to Select All and then Delete.

If the files are in use, and you are unable to delete some files, restart your device. After rebooting, run the above commands again. Now you will be able to delete the files from the mentioned Software Distribution folder.

After you have emptied this folder, you may restart your computer or you may type the following commands one at a time in the CMD, and hit Enter to restart the Windows Update related Services.

Run Windows Update again and see.

You will be able to download and install the updates successfully. Once done, you will see that a restart has also been scheduled.

I suggest you restart immediately to complete the process.

This worked for me and I hope it does for you too.

If it does not, you may try this:

Run Windows Module Installer

The Windows Module Installer is a built-in Windows 10 service. It lets you fix the Windows updates which are stuck.

To use this, open a command prompt with admin privileges.

Type the following and hit Enter:

Once successfully executed, you should see [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS display within the Command Prompt console.

Exit the command prompt, and check if the buttons are back to normal.

If nothing helps, you can download Windows 10 ISO and make a fresh install too.

Thank you for your replies. I have been going through each of your suggestions over the past few days, but without success. Windows 10 update fails repeatedly.

Now, my computer triggers Windows 10 update automatically, with a Hide button, but no button to stop or delay it. To stop it, I invoke Task Manager to kill the Windows 10 Update Assistant application, which works for a while. Then the Windows 10 update window pops up automatically again. If I allow the update to proceed, it gets to the point where it asks to reboot the computer, and presents a button to delay the reboot, with a 30-minute countdown until it automatically reboots. Delay only delays. The darn thing is going to reboot whether I like it or not.

When the computer reboots, the screen turns red, allowing no work. «Working on Updates» appears. Now, it gets stuck, after about 45 minutes, at 38% (previously at 39%, strange). Ctrl_Alt_Delete is disabled. Only way out is to turn the power off and restart. Restart invokes «Restoring previous version of Windows,» which work, but the computer is back where it was, and the Windows 10 Update window re-appears to cycle through the failed process again.

Windows Defender scanned cleaned. Malwarebytes, scanned clean. Windows troubleshooter scanned clean. Disabling all startup applications and unplugging all USBs also did not help.

Method 1:

I recommend that you connect to the network directly using an Ethernet cable.

Method 2:

If that will not work, reset the Windows Update component by using a batch file.

Copy this to notepad and save as update.bat — All Files
