Download and install the Windows ADK

The Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) has the tools you need to customize Windows images for large-scale deployment, and to test the quality and performance of your system, its added components, and the applications running on it. The Windows ADK includes:

The Windows Assessment Toolkit and the Windows Performance Toolkit to assess the quality and performance of systems or components.

Deployment tools such as WinPE, Sysprep, and other tools that you can use to customize and deploy Windows 10 images.

Starting with Windows 10, version 1809, Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE) is released separately from the Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). To add Windows PE to your ADK installation, download the Windows PE Addon and run the included installer after installing the ADK. This change enables post-RTM updates to tools in the ADK. After you run the installer, the WinPE files will be in the same location as they were in previous ADK installs.

A Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 20H2 will not be released. You can use the Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 2004 To deploy Windows 10, version 20H2.

This article explains the role of the Microsoft Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) in creating rescue media, when you should use it and how you can enable it.

About the ADK

What is the Microsoft ADK?

The Microsoft Assessment and Deployment Kit is part of the Microsoft System tools. It is designed to give system administrators the ability to deploy Windows on a large scale with a number of custom tools for preparing their systems. For example, it might be used by the IT department of a large company to roll out pre-configured Windows Installs.

You may already be familiar with the Windows Automated Installation Kit, or Windows AIK. This is the previous offering for Microsoft that fulfilled a similar role.

Why does Reflect use the ADK or AIK?

Both the ADK and AIK contain a component called the Windows Preinstallation Environment, or Windows PE . This is a version of Windows contained in a Windows Image, or WIM file, which is cut down from the full install of Windows but contains sufficient utilities for building recovery, install and system preparation environments.

Reflect uses the basic PE environmnent from the ADK/AIK as a base and customises this environment with the Reflect tools. This gives Reflect a rescue environment with access to a range of common hardware drivers as well as native support for Windows File Systems and Windows boot management utilities.

What is the difference between the ADK and AIK?

The ADK is a newer version of the kit designed for Windows 8. Each Windows PE version is based on a version of Windows. In the case of PE 4 (available in the ADK) the environment is based on Windows 8. In the case of PE 3, the environment is based on Windows 7. As such, PE4 supports a number of enhancements to the Windows boot environment which arrived in Windows 8.

When should I use the ADK or AIK?

If you have Windows 8, you should use the ADK if:

You only have Windows 8 drivers for your hardware. As PE3 is based on Windows 7, it requires Windows 7 compatible drivers. If you do not have access to these, but do have access to Windows 8, you can use the ADK and Reflect will copy your Windows 8 drivers from your system (or search for Windows 8 drivers as needed).

You require support for UEFI Secure Boot when using Fix Boot Options. Windows 8 is the first version of Windows to support Secure Boot and the relevant support utilities are needed by Reflect to correctly fix a system using UEFI Secure Boot.

You should use the AIK if you only have Windows 7 drivers for your hardware. As PE4 is based on Windows 8, it requires Windows 8 compatible drivers.

Can I use PE4 (ADK) to back up/recover a Windows 7 or earlier system?

Can I remove the ADK after I have created rescue media?

Yes you can. To do this, open up Add/Remove Programs from the control panel. You can then select the entry Assessment and Deployment Kit and remove the kit from there.

Note : if you remove the kit, but need to rebuild your rescue media at a later stage you will need to re-install the kit which may involve a new download if you have deleted the installer.

Enabling the ADK

How you enable the ADK for your install of Reflect depends on your setup.

Prerequisites

You need to be running Macrium Reflect on either Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012, or a later Windows Operating System to use the ADK. If you are not running Windows 8 or Server 2012, you will have

no issues running PE3 (the AIK).

If you have never created WAIK/WADK rescue media before

Reflect will default to the ADK.

If you have previously created rescue media, or wish to change the type of media you are creating

To change to the ADK, or switch your rescue media type:

In the main window of Reflect, click the rescue media wizard icon.

On the first page of the rescue media wizard, select the Windows PE option and then select the auto-built PE option.

In the dropdown, select the WAIK or WADK.

When you click next, the ADK will be automatically downloaded and installed for you.

Enabling the ADK (alternative method)

You can also change this setting through the Reflect defaults. To do this:

In the main window of Reflect, press the edit defaults toolbar option or choose Other Tasks then Edit Defaults from the menu.

In the Reflect Defaults screen, select the Advanced Tab.

In the options list on the left hand side of this dialog, select Rescue media.

You will then be presented with a choice of Windows Kit for Rescue Media which allows you to select the kit you wish to use.

Once you have selected a kit, press Ok to close the dialog.

The next time you start the Rescue Media Wizard your Auto-built PE option will indicate the new kit type.

As with the WAIK, if you have not previously installed the WADK Reflect will download the ADK setup utility and run it for you. You will be presented with the following dialog:

We recommend leaving the default options selected. You then simply need to follow the wizard. On the features page, Reflect will select the minimal required features for you. You need to ensure Deployment Tools and Windows PE are selected for Reflect to function correctly, as shown in the screenshot below:

The WADK Setup wizard will then complete your installation and you can continue creating your rescue media.

В данной статье будет дан краткий обзор самого пакета и входящим в него утилитам. Рассмотрение средств развертывания будет выполняться в последующих статьях этого цикла.

Установка пакета

Думаю, что вы помните, что установка предыдущей версии средств развертывания, Windows AIK , была сопряжена с передачей по сети больших объемов данных, иными словами, требовалось скачать огромный дистрибутив пакета – ни много ни мало – 1,2 Гб.

Установщик Windows ADK теперь «весит» всего лишь 1,1 Мб. Такая компактность связана с тем, что скачиваемый установщик является веб-инсталлером, и сам скачивает все необходимые компоненты, в зависимости от выбора пользователя. За счет этого существенно экономится трафик, так как администратор теперь не должен скачивать весь дистрибутив пакета ради одного-двух необходимых ему компонентов. Также за счет этого можно не беспокоиться об обновлении пакета – в случае наличия обновлений установщик самостоятельно загружает и применяет их.

Итак, перейдем к процессу установки пакета.

При запуске установщика администратор должен выбрать тип установки – либо установщик скачивает и сразу же устанавливает необходимые компоненты на конечный компьютер, либо же он просто загружает их на жесткий диск для последующего сетевого развертывания для экономии интернет-трафика.

Далее необходимо выбрать компоненты для установки. Для подробного ознакомления с пакетом рекомендуется установить все компоненты, далее начнется загрузка и установка компонентов.

Windows Performance Analyzer

Данный компонент пакета предназначен для измерения производительности системы при выполнении рабочих задач. Вы запускаете мониторинг, а далее – ресурсоемкое приложение, игру либо выполняете любые действия, за производительностью при выполнении которых вам необходимо наблюдать.

Мониторинг запускается путем запуска программы «Регистратор производительности Windows », щелчком по соответствующему тайлу, либо командой wprui . exe

В окне программы необходимо установить необходимые флажки, а далее нажать кнопку «Пуск». После этого можно начать выполнять необходимые действия. Как только потребуется остановить мониторинг, нужно будет нажать на кнопку «Сохранить», указать путь и имя файла для сохранения, ввести описание и еще раз нажать на «Сохранить» — начнется запись отчета в *. etl – файл.

Как только отчет будет записан, его можно будет открыть в анализаторе, который можно запустит командой wpa . exe . Анализатор предоставляет средства для анализа отчета, с возмождносятми подробной детализации.

Windows Assessment Toolkit

Средства из этого пакета также предназначены для сбора данных о производительности системы, однако содержат в себе готовый набор тестов. Оценивается не производительность железа, а всей системы в целом. При этом ведется не просто запись данных в отчет, пакет сам выполняет необходимые действия, и участие администратора не требуется. Больше того, работа с системой во время выполнения теста может отрицательно сказаться на качестве тестирования.

Запуск необходимого теста выполняется при помощи программы «Консоль оценки Windows ».

Во время работы теста крайне не рекомендуется работать с компьютером. Система сама будет дать необходимую нагрузку на него.

Windows Automated Installation Kit

Представляет собой пакет средств развертывания ОС. По сравнению со старой версией был обновлен для полной поддержки Windows 8 и Windows Server 2012

Windows System Image Manager по прежнему остается основной утилитой, при помощи которой выполняется подготовка файлов ответов для автоматизации установки ОС. Он был обновлен, но его пользовательский интерфейс практически не изменился:

Программа ImageX по своей сути практически не изменилась. Как и в предыдущих версиях, она используется для захвата, применения и изменения образов системы Windows , хранящихся в файлах WIM

Ее функции остались такими же:

IMAGEX / APPEND – добавление образа в WIM -файл

IMAGEX / APPLY – применение образа к конечному пути

IMAGEX / CAPTURE – захват образа в новый WIM -файл

IMAGEX / DELETE – удаление образа из WIM -файла

IMAGEX / DIR – вывод содержимого образа

IMAGEX / EXPORT – экспортирование образа из WIM -файла в новый WIM -файл

IMAGEX / INFO – вывод информации об образе

IMAGEX / SPLIT – разделение WIM -файла на несколько WIM -файлов заданного размера

IMAGEX / MOUNT – монтирование образа к папке в правами на чтение

IMAGEX / MOUNTRW – монтирование образа к папке с полными правами доступа

IMAGEX / REMOUNT – восстановление связи смонтированного образа и папки, куда он был смонтирован

IMAGEX / COMMIT – применение изменений к образу из папки, в которую он был смонтирован

IMAGEX /UNMOUNT – размонтирование образа от папки

IMAGEX /CLEANUP – очистка папок после некорректного размонтирования образа

Таким образом, администратор может пользоваться ImageX так же, как и в предыдущей версии.

Последним важным компонентом средств развертывания является среда Windows PE , в которой выполняется запуск программы установки setup . exe

Как известно, Windows PE основана на ядре Windows, как следствие – с выходом пакета Windows ADK была полностью обновлена. Итак, в состав Windows ADK входит Windows PE 4.0. Как и в предыдущих версиях, она не содержит графического интерфейса, имеет ограничения по времени работы, и имеет ряд других ограничений. Однако, в четвертой версии был существенно расширен список доступных компонентов – теперь из Windows PE можно работать с чипом TPM , командлетами Power Shell , и самое главное – выполнять в ее среде приложения, написанные на основе . NET Framework .

Volume Activation Management Tool

Данное средство было в предыдущей версии пакета Windows AIK , однако в Windows ADK претерпело некоторые изменения.

Во-первых, появились опции настройки активации клиентских и серверных систем через Active Directory . (доступно только для Windows 8 и Windows Server 2012)

Во-вторых, был расширен функционал самой утилиты в сторону повышения управляемости корпоративными ключами
