I have the same issue with a Roccat Kone Mouse. the side buttons (4/5) are no longer working. They work just fine in every other game. The only change since yesterday (they were still working then) was the new Windows 10 update.

It seems to have something to do with the Windows 10 update. Dishonored 2 no longer detects Mouse 4 and 5, though I confirmed the buttons are working in Windows. Bummer.

Edit: Rolled back the Creators Update preview and my buttons work again. It’s definitely the Win 10 update causing the issue.

they never fixed this apparently, I have the same problem with a Logitecth mouse

If you have Windows 10 as stated above, this may be the problem.

I’ve got a logitech that I’ve bound my thumb-back button to melee, and it works fine, but I’m on windows 7 so I haven’t had any weird updates that break things.

Yeah that’s definitely the w10 at work. I only have the one mouse but I use it for literally everything, and when there’s an option to rebind a melee to that key I do it. Hasn’t failed yet.

Maybe look into the windows updates and see whether others have had the problem outside of gaming, and find out what you might be able to do. Rolling back the creator’s update might be it, and I don’t envy doing that for just one game :/

I disabled the «other» Hid Mouse I have for some reason in the device manager and everything is fine now :). I tried it before but the game was still running in background.

Really a great game, Im glad I can play it.

On my client PC the mouse buttons 4 and 5 do not work unless you hold the shift key, but they are flipped so back is forward and forward is back. I just discovered that the mouse buttons even worked at all with the shift modifier.

Versions and operating systems:

I noticed that i’m having a very similar issue with an ubuntu server and a windows client. Except for my 4/5 don’t work at all and my side scroll wheel turns into 4/5 buttons. i have a feeling it’s related.

With a Windows server/Fedora client I have a similar issue, my forward-back buttons work as side-scroll.

I had to add the opposite mapping to @dbergamini to my options to make it work correctly. I.e.

The config file i see doesn’t follow the same format mentioned here. It is called an internal config file.

Is it possible to map mouse buttons in the internal config? Can i use both an external and an internal config?

Unfortunately this is not perfect. If you press a key before the mouse button and then press the side buttons, they will not register.

e.g, if you hold shift and also press the side butons, they will not register/stick.

For example: If you are in windows explorer and hold shift and also press the side buttons, it won’t register. It only occurs on modifier keys like shift and ctrl. I don’t know how to disable modifier keys. Disabling them in the screen section for both server and client does not work.

Map or disable mouse buttons 4 and 5 on Windows

Mouse Manager is a free program for Microsoft Windows devices that gives you full control over the functionality of the mouse buttons 4 and 5.

Many computer mice have more than three buttons. While you can still buy a mouse with two or three buttons only, you may also buy mice with five or more buttons as well or other crazy designs.

Especially gaming mice tend to come with a lot of buttons that you can map all kinds of in-game actions to.

Buttons four and five are called side or thumb buttons as they are often attached to the side of the mouse and controlled with thumb activity.

Windows maps forward and backward navigation to these buttons by default which you can use in web browsers and some other programs.

There is no obvious way to map other functionality to mouse buttons; Windows does not include a tool that you may use to map different functionality to the mouse. Some manufacturers include mouse software that you may use for the purpose.

Mouse Manager

Mouse Manager is a third-party program to map or disable the mouse buttons 4 and 5 on Windows devices.

The program requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 4 or higher, and needs to be installed before it can be run. The interface is pretty straightforward; switch to the profiles tab and click on the add button to create a new mouse profile for the connected mouse.

The application limits control to buttons 4 and 5 which you can either disable by clicking on the x-icon next to them on the profile configuration page or by typing a key or a sequence of keys that you want to map to the button. You could use it to execute a series of keys in rapid succession or write something to the screen.

Mouse Manager does not support any special actions or programs; you cannot map actions like volume up or down, the loading of a program, or shutting down of the system to the mouse button.

While that is fairly restrictive, most users may not need the extra functionality. I for one selected to disable the buttons as I never use them and hit them accidentally once or twice a year.

You can create multiple profiles and switch between those profiles from the application’s system tray icon.

An advanced version of Mouse Manager, called Advanced Mouse Manager, is available as well. It is not free but adds features such as application profiles which switches profiles automatically for you in the background.

Mouse Manager needs to run in the background and uses about 11 Megabytes of memory while it does so on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Closing Words

Mouse Manager is a handy program for Windows users who want to disable mouse buttons 4 and 5, or map them to different functionality.

Some mice have «forward» and «back» buttons in addition to the standard ones. Would be nice to to be able to bind those to VSCode’s navigateForward/navigateBack actions.

From my experience, this is highly dependant on one’s mouse setup. Most mice I have seen have the default setup has those mouse buttons mapped to the keys: alt+left , alt+right for back , and forward respectively.

Edit: I just realized that Windows actually emits a dedicated virtual key code for those buttons, Usually named something to the effect of VK_BROSWER_BACK this is what vscode listens for, not alt+left . by default that is.

I have a Logitech G7000s which has 8 buttons addition button. Logitech ships it with software that lets you map what happens when you press a key. I would check your mouse’s manufacture to see what they have available. If there’s nothing of use/usable on your OS, there’s a bunch of software out there to help you do it manually.

Having switched to Linux a month or so back, I had the fun experience of using xbindkeys to listen for the mouse button to be pressed, and then using xte to emit the corresponding series of virtual keystrokes.

Note that currently we only support these buttons on Windows. There they are bound to navigating in the history.

it’s driving me crazy when I follow a definition and then want to jump back to where I was. Right now it just changes the indent on the current line. (I’ve been loving and abusing this in slack lately :P)

@g5codyswartz for temporary fix you can use ctrl-o ctrl-i vim bindings with vim plugin. But having this on mouse too would be pretty sweet. (gd for jumping to definition)

Still not implement in Electron (see electron/electron#6996) but this node module was made especially to tackle this issue.
Could it be used for VS-Code to solve this?

@skyjur That’s a cute solution, but won’t be satisfactory for most people I guess; nobody wants a special keyboard shortcut to be system-wise if it should only be used from within a single software!
(but maybe I’m just a little bit too picky…)

If you are using BetterTouchTool on Mac you can map the mouse shortcuts to keyboard shortcuts specific to VSCode application, like button4 to Cmd [ for navigating back in VSCode.

It works like a charm for me 🙂

Seriously, this doesn’t need any X hacks to work properly. Chrome and chromium work fine with mouse navigation buttons and have done so for years. Something’s not wired up properly on the vscode codebase itself.

That it works in Chrome doesn’t automatically mean that it’d work in Electron apps.

For what it’s worth, the mouse buttons work in Slack and Spotify Windows clients (which are Electron apps AFAIK) but not in Linux clients.

But, I have SensibleSideButtons to have theses buttons working on other programs like Firefox, and I have to disable it.

Now it’s working in vscode and no more in Firefox.. 😅

If you have SensibleSideButtons running on your mac, try to turn it off. I tested and this feature only works with SensibleSideButtons disabled, so I have to choose between firefox + system navigation or VSCode navigation.
Seems that because of the SensibleSideButtons bind the Mouse 4 and 5 to the swipe left/right gestures so It doesn’t work. I’m not sure if we are able to make swipe left/right gestures of Mac to be navigate-able in VSCode.

If you have SensibleSideButtons running on your mac, try to turn it off. I tested and this feature only works with SensibleSideButtons disabled, so I have to choose between firefox + system navigation or VSCode navigation.

Thanks for telling me this. I don’t have that software running, but indeed I am using Logitech Options driver, which might rebind my 4/5 keys to some other keys called «forward/back». Although it works on chrome, it doesn’t work in vscode. After killing the driver deamon, the 4/5 keys work in vscode, but other custom keys dead. So I have to live with Logi driver. Don’t know why it functions well on Windows, hope this could be fixed on mac soon!

On macOS using a Logitech mouse with the Logi Options driver, I only needed to rebind the keystrokes that the Mouse buttons 4/5 (sidebar buttons) perform and which keystrokes the VS Code workbench.action.navigateBack and workbench.action.navigateForward actions are bound to.

• I bound the mouse «backward» button and the VS Code navigate backward action to Cmd+LeftArrow .
• I bound the mouse «forward» button and the VS Code navigate forward action to Cmd+RightArrow .

I chose those keybindings because they continued to navigate forward/backward in Chrome for me, too. Felt like a win-win-win scenario.
