You can specify /NOUI command line switch to run CloseAll in silent mode and close all windows without any UI interaction. Just open CloseAll shortcut properties and add /NOUI to the “Target” location:

How to close multiple windows in the taskbar at once
New Explorer folders are always opened in a new window on my system because I think it’s a comfortable way to work with folders and windows. I never liked the default way of opening a new folder in the same window in Windows Explorer as I had to launch a new Explorer window anytime I wanted to have direct access to multiple Explorer windows at once.
The problem with opening each folder in a new window however is that it may spawn a lot of windows on your system. Say I want to navigate to the Firefox profile folder which is deeply nested on the system. When I do so, I open five or more folders along the way which I do not really need anymore.
To deal with this, I’m using an option that not all Windows users know about. It allows me to close multiple windows at once from the taskbar of the system.
Even better, you do not need third party software, add-ons or any other hack or tweak to do so, and I have to admit that it saved me quite some time throughout the years. To close multiple folders at once, simply hold down the CTRL key to select multiple folders that you want to close by clicking on them.
Once you have selected all the folders that you want to close, right-click on the selection and select the Close Group item from the context menu.
This closes all selected folders at once. The method works really well and can not only be used to close multiple Windows Explorer folders at once but also other programs that you may have open on the computer. You can even select folders and programs at the same time to close all of them.
Update: Please note that the method is not working on newer versions of Windows. What you can do however is right-click on a stack of folders or programs in the taskbar to close them all at once.
Note that you can only close all or the selected window in newer versions of Windows, and not customize that selection unless you select the «never combine» option in the taskbar properties.
Close All Windows At Once
While it is possible to close programs directly, for instance by killing their running process, it is usually better to close the applications from within the program interface so that program settings and data are saved correctly and without chance of corruption or errors. Most programs close down just fine, even if forced to close on the other hand. Some one the other hand may give you problems. Firefox may for instance «forget» the current browsing session on next start up.
Most Windows users come into contact with closing windows by force when they press the shutdown button on their computer. Depending on their settings, Windows may force programs to terminate which can result in the aforementioned problems.
Close All is a lightweight portable application for Windows that provides users with an option to close all program windows at once by executing it on the system.
The program has no interface. When you double-click it, it will close down all windows in record time. It will not shut down Windows for you though. It is therefor handy for users who close all open programs and windows manually before they shut down their system.
Probably the best way to use it is to place a shortcut to the program on the Windows desktop, or in the case of Windows 7 users, by pinning it to the taskbar.
The program is offered as a 32-bit and 64-bit edition. The program supports parameters to exclude programs from closing down when the program is executed. For that though, you best create a program shortcut and edit the shortcut properties so that you do not have to enter the parameters whenever you want to close all but select program windows.
Right-click the program executable in Windows Explorer for that and select create shortcut from the context menu. This creates a shortcut in the same directory. Right-click that shortcut now and select properties from the menu.
Locate the target part of the window and add to the end of the path the following paramter
Replace app-to-exclude.exe with the application that you do not want to be closed when the shortcut is used. You can add multiple programs to the list by separating them with the pipe | character. If you do not want Firefox and Windows Explorer to be closed down automatically you would use the following parameter.

All answers I could quickly find on this topic involve either the tip Molly gave or using an application (or coding it yourself). For example (I haven’t tried this), Close All Windows.
Also, by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc you get the Windows Task Manager, where you can see all running applications at once (among other things), select them, and End Task them.
I like to see my open windows ungrouped, but realized that this i.e. closing multiple windows at once was a problem with such a setting. A less time-taking method would be to use the command line like this :

Caution : This will cause processes like file copying on the default Windows interface to abort.
Simultaneously close all open windows:
- While pressing the Ctrl key, successively click each of the task icons on the taskbar.
- Right-click the last task icon, and choose Close Group.
If you only want to minimize the windows, use the ‘Show Desktop’ shorcut.
I usually (yes, this happens a lot to me..) just press Alt key and then go crazy on the F4 key until everything is shut down. Not one click, but it’s pretty fast. Or, depending on your system, reboot.. Don’t forget to save anything.
Or maybe you could simply switch users to continue your work without all these tabs. Then when you’re down, shutting down the computer will kill all the processes for the first user.
Not the best solutions, I just thought Id give this one a try.
It’s not a one-click solution but it is the fastest I know with my Windows 7 Pro
- Open taskbar properties (right click > properties) or (Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Taskbar and Start Menu)
- Select «Group similar taskbar buttons» = «Group similar taskbar buttons», and click OK
- Your windows are group, right-click and select «Close all windows»
- Go back to taskbar properties to restore you old settings
After doing Ctrl-Shift-Esc, go to applications. Then, press shift down and end task, all of them will end (You might get a confirmation message or something depending on the program).
Sometimes, even when you close a program, the processes of the program (The biggest example is an unclosed connection to a local file) may still be on your computer. Most of the time, these processes are mainly overlooked by the owner software because they use almost no space. However, if you still want to end them, just to be meticulous, go to processes and you’ll have to end them one by one.
