Windows crashing after update

windows crash after updates

Since late 2019 I have been having crash problems with computer every time I do the updates.

lately «3 months ago» I turned off auto update. Even when being selective on what gets updated

the system crashes after reboot, EVERY TIME. It was good that i had install 2 more storage

hard drives to store important files but I seem to loose all my files, programs, documents that didn’t

make it there. Now for the fifth time this year I lost all on my C drive. The recovery flash drive won’t

recover win 10 because they don’t give the coding that makes recovery PLUUUU.

I had to install Win 7 and I can see old Win 10 files but wont activate.

Can some one tell me that Microsoft isn’t committing intentionally crashing, sabotage or evil doings to

encourage purchasing of new equipment. I have been a Microsoft user since DOS 6.2. It just seems to

happen every 3-5 years. I built this super advanced computer in 2011 and the technology is just catching up.

So why all the stupid updates or enhanced features? That really blows.

Answer is I’m 57. I have been building computer just as long as you. You might be cheap and buy cheap parts. when IBM cam out with Pentium 1 with 75 mhz I paid over $1800.00 at micro center then added a 1000 more to boost RAMS, Hard drive and the fastest modem card available. That lasted until Pentium 2 cam out which the Pentium 1 crashed after updates from Win 3.1 to Win 95.

And so on. In 2010 I built this EVGA proto type X79 dark computer system that was capible of turning WOT game into 3D at 120 FPS with only 35 mbs internet without glitches at high end graphics. I had clock speeds 4.2 ghz. remember this was 2010.. 8 years before Microsoft were sell that kind of software.

Back to the issue. nothing change in this computer that i’m typing this from. I had to reload Win 7 to get the computer working again. Can’t help it if you suck at your job. But in my business the customer is to be assumed right until proved wrong in witch I have been know to be able to do.

I stand firmly by my beliefs and have all the evident’s to prove

Windows crashing can mean different things to different people.

It is a popular problem when after a Windows Update a system might crash on reboot or sometime later when doing things and it did not crash before the update. The usual suspect is that in the Windows Updates installed was a hardware driver update AND the Windows Update settings are configured to automatically install updates — the riskiest possible setting you could choose but also the default. Most people just blindly install every update offered without looking at them. That puts these crashes into the category of self inflicted wounds.

This is also the reason there are so many topics in these communities that start with words like «Windows Update broke my computer. «

It is a fact that Microsoft and Windows Update often allow the installation of hardware drivers (audio, video, network, printer, etc.) that are out of date or incompatible with the system and will result in usually a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD).

It is also a fact that Windows Update always makes a Restore Point before installing updates (if it is able) so that if there is a problem after the updates you can restore your system to the date/time prior to the incident.

The best strategy seems to be to have the Windows Update settings set to Never install updates and that puts you in charge of what gets installed on your system instead of MS but then it will also be up to you to periodically check for updates manually and then you can look at each one and choose not to install and also choose to hide anything that looks like a hardware driver update.

Hiding an update does not mean you will not see it again — sometimes that works and sometimes not.

Windows has a method built in to tell Windows Update not to offer any hardware driver updates but I would not count on that to work 100% of the time.

You can read more about that here:

Resolving crashes and BSoDs are usually able to be fixed/resolved if the right questions are asked and enough information is provided. The right questions are often not asked and too many suggestions begin with the word «try». You don’t need to try things, you need to do things.

Chances are that you did not have to reinstall Windows 7 (always the absolute last resort). you chose to reinstall Windows 7.

Windows 10 Pro crashing after 1909 update

I finally updated my copy of windows 10 a couple of months ago and have had persistent instability ever since. I’ve been reading forums and trying to figure out what is causing windows to crash and the PC to reboot. I essentially use this computer as a HTPC that does some media management when the TV is off. The PC seems to crash right when I turn on the TV. It is a little intermittent. The windows reliability app led me to believe that it was a video driver issue. I have updated every driver I could find after the update, so I don’t think an old driver is the issue at this point. I actually went and installed new video card hoping that it would work better, but that didn’t improve the situation. In fact I think I might be getting some new hardware errors. The reliability data is below concerning the windows crashing issue that I have been fighting for the last two months. I’m under the impression that the error from ‘nvhda64v’ is a video card driver issue, but correct me if I’m wrong. I know people usually want to see the DMP file and that it is usually uploaded somewhere, so let me know how to do that if you want that file. I’m really hoping for a clear identification of the problem because I am out of ideas given what I thought the problem was. The PC never crashed before the 1909 update.

Windows10 crashing after update

I bought win10 last August when I finally accepted XP was not that usefull. But. I have had to re-install Win10 like 4 times this far. It fights with my graphics card.

I really don’t care what your problem is with NVIDIA, but if I pay for the 10, I want the operating system to work.

After some update this June the 10 just shows me th BSoD with codes 0xc0000225 at first and after a clean install 0xc000021a. I can re-install the 10 but after updates it does the BSoD again.

I really don’t want to re-install my operating system every month. And if you cannot deliver an operating system for older hardware, don’t shut down the working OSs. I don’t want to trash my computer (working just fine) just because the industry wants more profit.

I would like to ask the guys doing the coding, why? What can I do? Is there an option to only install the driver for the graphics without windows updates?

HI Susanna. I’m Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Check for a newer Display driver on the PC or Display adapter Support Downloads webpage. While there check if there are other newer drivers to Update, including BIOS, Chipset, Sound, Network, USB3, Bluetooth and all others. Compare to the one present installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.. You can take your time until they are all updated.

If there is no newer Update then check for what’s available from Nvidia using their driver updater here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Scan.aspx?lang=e.

There is a known issue of incorrect Display driver being pushed by Windows Update which requires rolling back the driver. Right click Start to open Device Manager, choose Display device, then Driver tab, then Roll back.

If there is no Roll Back or that doesn’t help choose Update Driver on Display device Driver tab, then Browse Computer, then Let Me Pick to see a list of all previously installed Display drivers, work backwards trying each to find one that works.

If necessary you can also go to Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update to look for the driver under Installed Updates and Uninstall it form link there. Then you can hide the driver so it isn’t pushed again using the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2.

If none of those work try to System Restore to a point before the problem began: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t. . Make sure System Restore is always enabled for C with plenty of disk space apportioned (5-10%) in its Configuration settings.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it’s resolved.

MY PC keeps crashing after the latest windows update.

MY PC keeps crashing after the latest windows update. I have had to uninstall it twice and my PC the last time downloaded the update automatically. I tried doing a repair the last time, but it didn’t work. I keep getting one of the same three error messages:

Kernel security check failure

Driver IRQL.not less or equal (aid.sys)

http driver corrupted http.sys

I really don’t want to uninstall this a third time but what other option do I have?

I’ve had the same issues since update KB4489881 on 3/14. Research confirmed it was the problem so I uninstalled it last night. but of course it reinstalled. It took over a dozen attempts (getting the blue screen and shutdown) but finally I had enough time to start the uninstall again. After the system rebooted, I immediately changed the update setting so no more automatic windows updates. Things are looking good again after days of frustation and stress. I hope this works for you, too. BTW, I was going to try booting in safe mode but managed to get in and get it done.

I had no problems with Windows Update.

But if you want to change the settings for it:

In the Charms Bar > Settings > Change PC Settings > Update and Recovery > Windows Update > Choose how updates get installed.

Hello, I have been having blue screens while my laptop is in sleep mode since the updates. i am not experienced with computers so i am not certain what is causing the issue.

@WasagaB do you think its the same KB4489881 update that is causing the issue with Windows 8.1? I see it as one of the updates. I am mostly positive the update is the problem because I did a system restore to the point of a February update and left the laptop in sleep mode for a couple of days and NO blue screens occurred.

Last night I updated each of the important updates one at a time, after completion I put the laptop in sleep mode for a couple of hours, opened it and faced the blue screen with driver irql equal or less than.

How would I go about uninstalling this update? I am not very experienced with computers although have been using them for years, just not on a technical level to understand a whole lot.

Should I just do a system restore again and choose to update everything but this particular update and leave it at that? Is there a possibility Microsoft will fix this issue where its safe to make updates as I usually have? I’ve been at a loss since this weekend and been under a lot of stress trying to pinpoint the issues I have been having. I do know the blue screens started happening after I downloaded the updates, put the laptop in sleep mode, and turned it on the next day.

Thanks for being in touch! I am not an expert either, but did my best to research this issue.

Yes, I believe the KB4489881 is the culprit. In this forum alone, 4 of us have reported the issue looking for help. I figure many more people out there are struggling.

So again, I am no expert but I can tell you what has worked for me. And I have had no more issues since completing the steps I will outline for you now.

First, uninstall the update. Depending on how often the blue screen comes up, it may take several attempts. I was about to try safe mode, but finally got to do what I needed. Here is the sequence:

Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Installed Updates > Uninstall an Update (Select «Security update for Microsoft Windows (KB4489881)» from the list and click Uninstall.

You have to reboot at this point and it takes a long time!

Next step: go back to the Control Panel and navigate to Windows Update. Look for the settings and make sure that you do not have «Install updates automatically (recommended)» selected. If you don’t change this, the update will reinstall. More blue screens!!

I chose «Check for updates but let me choose whether to install them»

This means that you will see a reminder message everytime you log on. But it allows you to ignore that update.

I have no idea if Microsoft will fix this problem. But at least we know not to install that update.

Hope this helps! Like you, I was stressed out, lost sleep — not to mention productivity.

Thank you for responding so quickly and in detail. Since I posted I found out how to remove the update which I did. I stress pretty easy in a really rough way as well when issues occur. losing sleep is one of the things as you mentioned, especially with computers because you have to make all these attempts at a bunch of unfamiliar tasks and then when you see you aren’t getting anywhere it creates more frustration. I do have Asperger’s however and always get in rough shape over electronic issues.

Anyhow, I checked to see if the update was removed, its back in the windows install and I’ve had the settings for windows updates as you said since this has been happening with my laptop over the weekend.

Oddly it seems like the occurrences of blue screens since the update effect people in different ways. I heard of someone getting them every 5-10 minutes, and in my case its been whenever I put the laptop in sleep mode. So after removing this update I am going to put my laptop in rest mode for awhile, and check in on it after certain lengths of time. If it can make a couple of nights without blue screens then I’ll know it was that update for certain.

I am glad I ran into your post, as I wasn’t sure how to pinpoint which update it was causing all of this. When more updates arrive I will be checking around here to see if there has been any fixes for this where its safe to update. Thank you again.
