Windows Defender KB915597 Automatic Update and Other Source update.

It appears that after every automatic update to Windows Defender on my home computer another update appears that another update appears about 3 days later from an «other source.» Is this as it should be? Both definition links are to Link All definitions are different and my computer was updated July 28,2010 and July 30, 2010. It was also updated for the same KB915597 on May 27, 2010 and on May 31, 2010. I don’t understand why the KB is dowloaded multiple times automatically and also from «other source.»

TIP: Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2; Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or newsgroup.

Left to its own devices, Windows Defender will auto-update itself twice-a-week (typically on Monday/Tuesday and then on Friday/Saturday). These updates are the «Other Source» updates you find listed in Update History.

With Microsoft Update [1] as your default update source, you will be offered Defender updates when running a manual check for updates. These are Optional updates: If you choose not to install one, Defender will still auto-update itself per the above.

В процессе установки обновлений Windows, можно наткнутся на то, что при установке обновления «Обновление механизма обнаружения угроз Windows Defender Antivirus — KB915597 (версия 1.317.1624.0)» Центр обновлений Windows выдает ошибку:

Код 8050800C: Произошла неизвестная ошибка Windows Update.

При этом повторная попытка установить данное обновление не даст никаких положительных результатов.

Исправление ошибки 8050800C

Способ 1: Отключение Защитника Windows

Данное обновление предназначено для Защитника Windows, по этому, если Вы им не пользуетесь (установлен другой антивирус, или просто Вам не нужен Защитник Windows), то можно просто выключить службу «Защитник Windows», после чего это обновление пропадет из Центра обновлений Windows.

После этого, можно повторно запустить поиск обновлений Windows, после чего обновление KB915597 пропадет из списка доступных обновлений.

Способ 2: Ручная установка последней версии Защитника Windows

В случае, если Вам нужен работающий Защитник Windows, то нужно скачать вручную последнюю версию с сайта Microsoft. Сделать это можно по ссылкам ниже:

Скачанный файл необходимо запустить с правами администратора, и установить. После этого, нужно запустить поиск обновлений Windows, и убедится, что проблемное обновление пропало.

Therefore the definition update that you’re trying to get rid of is irrelevant. It has already been updated.

Definition Update for Windows Defender — KB915597 (Definition 1.245.41.0) failed to install

I have Windows 7 (64 bit) desktop.

My latest Definition Update for Windows Defender — KB915597 (Definition 1.245.41.0) failed to install with this Unknown Error: Code 80070005 («WindowsUpdate_80070005» «WindowsUpdate_dt000»).

I restarted windows, disable my Bitdefender but was getting the same error.

I downloaded mpass-fe.exe to manually update the defender. When it runs it doesn’t give any messages. But when I look in About for Windows Defender I still see the only old definitians.

I even reset the entire Windows Updates:

1. stop the «windows update» service (services.msc)
2. delete all the contents inside the folder «C:\windows\

It took a while for Windows Updates to rebuild the store but I am getting the same error trying to update Windows Defender — KB915597 (Definition 1.245.41.0) when run it from Windows Updates (see the photo).

Anyone knows what’s the remedy?

If the Bitdefender application were installed and working properly (it’s not!), Defender should be disabled and no Definitions updates (KB915597) should be offered to the computer.

After I installed Bitdefender free antivirus it was working fine for months. However, to test your suggestion of a conflict I disabled Bitdefender. It gave me the same result.

Any other suggestions?
