The commercial edition has changed a lot since the freeware edition available here. It is much faster and optimized. It also sports better support for typing in foreign scripts.

This program is an On-Screen Display or a Heads-Up Display for keys. It displays every key or mouse button press at a clearly visible text size. I developed it for people like me, with poor eye sight or low vision. It is meant to aid desktop computer usage. It is especially useful while chatting or for occasional typing. The user no longer has to squint at the screen or zoom in the entire screen to see what s/he wrote for every text field.

This application can also be used for screen casts or presentations, by disabling the typing mode at Preferences. In its main menu, you can select Quick Start Presets to help you get started.

Numerous unique features, options and settings are available in the different Preferences windows provided in the program, such that everyone can find a way to adapt it to personal needs.

This application has support for Cyrillic and Latin-based keyboard layouts. I also did some limited testing with Indic layouts, e.g., Bengali, and as far as I can tell, KeyPress OSD works with these as well.

In recent versions, I implemented partial support for Right-to-Left [RTL] keyboard layouts, such as Arabic. Caret navigation is disabled for such layouts.

I did not test or developed this application having in mind support for Chinese or Japanese scripts. It would be too complex for me to implement support for such writing systems. On Windows, to type in such languages one makes use of IMEs [Input Method Editors] — additional typing aids that facilitate input of non-Latin texts using Latin keyboards.

If other programmers are willing to invest time in this application and to extend it, are welcomed to do so. Anyone is free to transform it into anything they wish. The source code is available. However, keep in mind, I am no programmer. I learned to code by developing this application. The code quality is definitely poor :-).

I coded the application as an AHK script for AutoHotkey_H v1.1.27. To execute/compile the source code one needs AutoHotkey_H v1.1+.

KeyPress OSD: Features

• Support for at least 110 keyboard layouts covering about 55 languages. It recognizes keys with Shift, AltGr and dead keys for each of these layouts.
• Automatic detection of keyboard layouts.
• Show previously pressed key if fired quickly.
• Count key presses or key fires and mouse clicks.
• Indicators for Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock states.
• Typing mode. It shows what you are typing in an expanding text area.
• Virtual caret/cursor navigation:
  • Navigate through typed text in the OSD in synch with the text field of the host application.
  • Basic support for copy, paste, cut and undo with Ctrl + A / Z / X / C / V.

• The OSD can hide or switch position automatically when the mouse runs over it.
• Customizable visual mouse clicks and mouse halo to indicate its location, and flash mouse cursor after idling.
• Mouse keys. Move the mouse cursor with the numpad keys.

Windows receiving false key presses (as if a key is being held down)

So, every once in a while my computer starts acting like I’m holding down a key when I’m not. It’s a different key each time the problem happens.

For example, today I was watching some videos in GB-PVR, when I pressed Alt-Enter to toggle fullscreen so I could do some web browsing. When I opened the web browser and clicked on the search field, the field was immediately populated with a constantly increasing number of the character ‘6’.

I exited GB-PVR at this point, and killed IMON (my IR receiver program), but this didn’t solve the issue. When I clicked on the start menu to restart IMON, the search field was, again, immediately populated with the character ‘6’.

When this has happened in the past, I usually restarted the computer via task manager. This time, however, I actually managed to gain some useful information. I utilized my pinned Explorer icon to open an Explorer window and navigate to Control Panel. From there, I launched Device Manager, and tried to uninstall the PS/2 keyboard driver. This failed because I wouldn’t let the computer restart. At that point, I uninstalled HID Keyboard Device, and Windows stopped receiving the key presses. When I scanned for hardware changes to reinstall HID Keyboard Device, the keyboard began behaving normally, at which point I began to search Google for similar issues.

Finding no similar issues, I decided to make a post about it.

Does anyone know any fixes for this? This is the third time it’s happened (the first time on this particular install), and it’s starting to get really annoying.

The computer still received the false keystrokes even with no keyboard connected, so it is not an issue with my keyboard.

I cannot test this in safemode, as it is an intermittent issue, and I have no way of predicting when it will happen. As I have stated before, when it happens, a restart fixes the problem, or in this last case, uninstalling and reinstalling HID Keyboard Device fixed the problem.

Sorry, I did mean that unplugging the keyboard didn’t stop the repeating. It is a very reliable keyboard though, an IBM Model M with buckling springs.

I have tried pressing the repeating key, and that seems to have no effect. At the time ‘6’ was repeating, numlock was off, so the normal 6 is the only one that could possibly have sent a key press, but I do remember switching numlock on and off to try pressing the other 6 to see what would happen, and that also didn’t affect the repeating 6.

So far, this has happened with three different keys. I can’t remember which key it was the second time, but the first time it was space, and of course this last time it was 6.

I used to use autohotkey, but I uninstalled it a long time before this started happening. I thought it might be something to do with my IR remote, since it usually happens after I’ve been using it to watch videos, but as I said before, killing IMON didn’t help (also, none of the buttons on my remote are mapped to the number 6 or the space bar, so if IMON had sent those key presses, then the program is seriously broken in some way).

The repetition seems to have nothing to do with what I’ve been typing, and in fact, I usually find it happening when I haven’t touched the keyboard for a period of 30 minutes or more.

The keyboard is not cordless, and I do not have a keyboard sharer. I also don’t make a habit of holding down multiple keys.

Now that I know unplugging the keyboard won’t stop the event, I’m not quite sure what to do, as I’d rather not switch keyboards and wait for this to happen again. The IBM model M keyboard is far superior to any I have ever used, and after getting used to the buckling spring technology, I find it somewhat awkward to type on mainstream ‘collapsing bubble’ style keyboards.

How can i capture key press in Windows Forms not from a Control?
I want the user to press any key any where in the Form and display the keypress in label
like if you write in the text box

I knew that i have to setup ( KeyPreview to true in the Form1 ) and use

But my problem is that i did not get the value correctly in the label

I’m giving training to a large group of people remotely and will be covering a number of application shortcut keys.

I’ve seen MousePose’s on-screen display of keystrokes; is there a similar product for Windows?

The other features of MousePose (fancy mouse pointers, etc.) aren’t really useful to me, just the OSD of key presses.

KeyPosé is a free alternative to MousePosé for Windows. You can see it in action in the screencast.

I highly recommend Carnac The Magnificent. It’s nicely executed, nicely designed and open sourced on GitHub project that really solves this problem well.

I would like to share my tool — keycastow.

I’ve written an AutoHotkey_L script for this purpose.

To run it, use AutoHotkey_L (direct dl), it’s FOSS. Also, with AutoHotkey you can compile script to EXE (simply Ahk2Exe.exe /in DisplayPressedKeyOnScreen.ahk /out DisplayPressedKeyOnScreen.exe ).

It can display pressed keys OSD-like or standard Tool-tip near mouse cursor. Also, it displays mouse button clicks and wheel scrolling.

(note that frame & blurring is done for illustration purposes, the script itself only displays text w/o any disturbances)
