The version number for the last ***** will change based on the updates that have been installed for Internet Explorer.
To see the version number and the most recent update installed, go to the Help menu, and select About Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 has a slight different versioning. Internet Explorer 11 changes its version with each update in the second part with the according OS-Build information. For example, if you have Windows 10 version 1607 with the KB4580346 from October 13, 2020, the Operating System shows an OS Build-number of 14393.3986 (as per winver.exe). Internet Explorer 11 will show as version 11.3986.14393.0.
The minor version number, build number, and sub-build number may be displayed without trailing zeros. For example, version 7.00.5730.1100 may be displayed as 7.0.5730.11.
All versions of Internet Explorer 9.0 and later versions that are customized with Microsoft Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) include one of the following strings after the version number. To view this information, click About on the Help menu:
- IC = Internet content provider
- IS = Internet service provider
- CO = Corporate administrator
Internet Explorer version 9.0 and Internet Explorer version 11.0 on products through Windows 10 version 1803 include an Update Versions line that lists all installed updates or hotfixes to the current version of Internet Explorer.
The version numbers of Internet Explorer in the list are based on the versions of Windows. The list numbers might be changed by the latest update. The build number of Internet Explorer in the release version of Windows Vista is the same as in other versions.
About Internet Explorer dialog in Internet Explorer 9 and 11 on products through Windows 10 version 1803
You can open the About Internet Explorer dialog box by clicking Help > About Internet Explorer. Or, press Alt+X and then press A.
The Update Versions field is updated every time Internet Explorer 9 or Internet Explorer 11 is updated. The version number has the following components:
- The App Major version field will remain 9 or 11.
- The App Minor version field will remain 0.
- The Update revision field will increment by 1 for each Internet Explorer update that is released.
Every update has an associated Knowledge base article (for example, KB4586768 – Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: November 10, 2020) associated with it. The article provides detailed information about what’s included in the update and the binaries that are updated. To get more information easily, check the About Internet Explorer dialog box. It provides a link to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article that’s associated with the most recently installed update to Internet Explorer.
For example, if the first update for Internet Explorer 9 has been installed, the About Internet Explorer dialog box will have a link to Update versions: 9.0.1 (KB2530548).
Changes to the About Internet Explorer dialog in Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 version 1809 and later
You can open the About Internet Explorer dialog box by clicking Help > About Internet Explorer. Or, press Alt + X and then press A.
On Windows 10 version 1809 and later, the About Dialog has been updated to use a more modern dialog that reflects the latest installed Operating System updates to provide better accuracy. The updated dialog will reflect the same version information as seen in winver.exe. Update Version is no longer used.
How to determine the version of Internet Explorer for Windows
To determine the version of Internet Explorer, use any of the following methods:
In all versions of Internet Explorer, select About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. The product and version information are displayed in the dialog box that appears.
Use the registry. You can determine the version of Internet Explorer by viewing the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Refer to svcVersion value in this key. The version string value contains the version number of Internet Explorer that is installed on your computer. (For example, the version string value for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 version 2004 is 11.630.19041.0). Only one zero is stored in the registry for the minor version number if the minor version number is 00. If the minor version number isn’t 00, the full version value is stored.
- The minor version number, build number, and subbuild number may be displayed without trailing zeros. For example, version 7.00.5730.1100 may be displayed as 7.0.5730.11.
- The version numbers of Internet Explorer in the list are based on the versions of Windows. The list numbers might be changed by the latest hotfix.
- Determine the version of Internet Explorer by using a script.
All versions of Internet Explorer send version information in the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) user agent information header. This information can be read from script on a webpage.
Webpage developers can use this information to take advantage of new features in later versions of Internet Explorer, such as HTTP Strict Transport Security in Internet Explorer 11.0. They can also downgrade for earlier versions of Internet Explorer that don’t support these features.
Windows 10 Explorer File Details Pane
Is it possible to get the File Details Pane to be on the bottom of the File Explorer Window in windows 10. It used to work like that on Windows 7.
I work with a large number of folders each containing hundreds of images so I have several file explorer windows open at once (on a secondary monitor.) It was nice to have the thumbnail of the image selected to be displayed at the bottom of the window. The new explorer simply requires too much space (width) on my desktop. Please give me back what used to work. I can’t see any logical reason to take that option away.

If you are referring for preview pane in File explorer then follow the steps below.
- Open File explorer; open any document or file or folder.
- Click on View on the Quick access toolbar ribbon.
- Click on Preview pane or Details pane.
You may please provide your suggestions in the feedback app. It will be directly referred by our developer’s team for further improvement.
Follow the steps:
- Go to Start , enter the phrase Windows Feedback and then select Windows Feedback.
- See if someone else has given similar feedback by entering the topic, such as Microsoft Music.
- If you find similar feedback, select it, add any details and then select Me too.
- To narrow your search to a specific category, pick the category that most closely matches your feedback (so it gets to the right people quickly). For example, for feedback about the Music app, select Apps > Music.
- If you don’t find any similar feedback, select New Feedback , choose a topic from Select a category and then select a subcategory.
- Enter your feedback (the more details the better!), add a screenshot if you can, and you’re done.
Hope it helps. Thank you.

I am looking to have the file details pane on the bottom of the file explorer window and not to the right of the files list. For me it is useless to have it off to the right as it requires my file explorer window to be too wide.
My workflow requires me to have up to 8 separate file explorer windows open at the same time. I reduce the width of each so I can have them side by side on a second monitor. In windows 7, I was able to have the file details at the bottom of this window which would give me a thumbnail of the image selected.
It seems silly that Microsoft took that away and «Submitting if for an improvement» sounds stupid when it used to work and now it doesn’t. Sounds like a case of two steps forward and three steps back. Thanks Microsoft.

«Click on Preview pane or Details pane.»
This is not acceptable. PLEASE submit a change request, feature enhancement, bug, something! Windows 7 let us see details AND preview panes at the SAME TIME! Many of us need this function! It’s not just a want. The needed the functionality was taken away with Windows 10 and makes Windows 10 unusable for some people for their daily use. I personally have done what you said and given feedback to development for this very problem, and so have many others, but it is NOT being changed, and people are leaving Windows 10 and going back to Windows 7 because of it.
Only seeing «one or the other» is useless for many people. Especially when it comes to images. There are images that look very similar and the details are needed to see difference in dimensions, pixel info, file size etc while scrolling through pictures. This is especially true when viewing images for embroidery files. The software that views these files uses the file explorer and shows the images in the preview, and the details with number of stitches and the size of height and width in the details. Many images look the same in the preview. They are the same design after all, but very different sizes and number of stitches. I t is imperative to see the details pane at the same time as the preview so we can scroll through images and easily tell which image is the one we truly need!
Windows 7 had preview and details pane available at the same time, and this is why so many people are complaining. This function was TAKEN AWAY. Very poor move by Microsoft and it kills productivity. I do not have time to switch between previews and details as I scroll through images and try to keep track of which image name was which.
We seriously need this Windows 7 functionality back for this reason. Many people have rolled back because they need both panes and the same time and cannot live without it. I’m ready to do it myself. We’ve been complaining about this ever since we switched to Windows 10, and since there is no change, people go back and ditch Windows 10 altogether.
For people using images a lot, having preview pan and detail pane together is essential!
Developing with Windows Explorer
Windows Explorer is a powerful resource-browsing and management application. Windows Explorer can be accessed as an integrated whole through Explorer.exe or the IExplorerBrowser interface. Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) can be spawned as a separate process using ShellExecuteEx or a similar function.
Command-line options for Explorer.exe are documented on the Microsoft Windows Support site in the article Windows Explorer Command-Line Options.
Open explorer windows can be discovered and programmed by using IShellWindows (CLSID_ShellWindows), and new instances of Windows Explorer can be created by using IWebBrowser2 (CLSID_ShellBrowserWindow).
The following code sample demonstrates how the Windows Explorer automation model can be used to create and discover explorer windows that are running.
The Windows Explorer client area can be hosted by using the IExplorerBrowser interface. The Windows Explorer client and the namespace tree controls are standard components of WindowsВ Vista and later. Developers can reuse the interfaces as building components. One common use of these controls is to create customized explorers appropriate to the problem domain.
The controls in Windows Explorer are classified into the following functional categories:
Navigation Controls
Navigation controls assist users in determining context and navigating the associated logical domain space, called the pagespace. For example, the pagespace for Windows Explorer is the Shell namespace. Pagespaces are composed of zero or more pages.
The following table lists and describes the navigation controls available in Windows Explorer in the WindowsВ Vista and later operating systems.
Navigation control | Description |
---|---|
Address Bar (Breadcrumb control) | Displays the address of the current page in the pagespace. Breadcrumb buttons can be clicked to navigate to any ancestor in the pagespace. Users can also type URLs and paths to navigate. |
Folder Tree | Provides a new version of a tree control, optimized for large pagespaces. |
Travel | Enables relative navigation through web-style buttons such as Back and Forward. |
Title | Displays the current explorer name and context. |
Pagespace | Displays the current branch of the pagespace. Pages can be ordered by different criteria. Users can click a page to navigate to it. |
Command Controls
Command controls advertise the features and functionality of the Windows Explorer to users. These controls perform either general actions or actions specific to one selected item or items.
Command control | Description |
---|---|
Toolbar | Displays buttons for commonly used commands (a new version of a command toolbar). Customization options include drop-down buttons, split buttons, optional descriptive text, and an overflow area. |
Hero | Appears as a single, optional, custom control in the center of the toolbar. It represents the primary command for the current context. |
Menu Bar | Presents commands through menus. |
Context Menu | Lists a contextually relevant subset of available commands that are displayed as a result of right-clicking an item. |
Property and Preview Controls
Property and preview controls are used to preview items, and to view and edit item properties.
Control | Description |
---|---|
Preview | Displays a preview of the selected item, such as a thumbnail or a Live Icon. |
Properties | Displays properties of the selected item. For multiple selections, it displays a summary of properties for the selected group of items. For a null selection, it displays a summary of properties for the current page (contents of the listview). |
Filtering and View Controls
Filtering and view controls are used to manipulate the set of items in the listview and to change the presentation of items in the listview.
Control | Description |
---|---|
Filter | Filters or arranges items in a listview based on properties listed as columns. Clicking on a column sorts by that property. |
Wordwheel | Dynamically and incrementally filters the displayed items in a listview based on an input text string. |
View | Enables the user to change the view mode of a listview control. A slider can be used to determine icon size. |
Listview Control
The listview control is used to view a set of items in one of four view modes: details, tiles, icons, or panorama. The listview control also enables the user to select and activate one or more items.
Although some of these controls have names and/or functionality that is similar to standard Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) controls found in the System.Windows.Controls namespace, they are distinct classes.
These separate controls work together largely through events generated either by user interaction or by the controls themselves. The following table shows the three primary event categories.
