Windows 10 How to Preview SVG Files in File Explorer

Have you ever wondered how to preview SVG files in Windows 10 with File Explorer like this?

Unfortunately it is not a built-in feature, as it is with the MAC operating system. To enable the ability to view SVG thumbnails in Windows 10 File Explorer, there is an extension you can install called the SVG Explorer Extension. For those with a lot of SVGs, this makes it way easier to browse and preview their SVG files in Windows. In the video, I also demonstrate Adobe Bridge, which is a free tool to preview SVG files and other image files. You can watch video that explains everything you need to know below.

Here are the basics, as explained in the video.

1. Click here to download the SVG Explorer Extension, renamed to SVGSee. Note where you saved it.
2. Close all applications and run the install. If Windows Defender attempts to block the install, just click on “More info” to install. This is shown in the video.
3. Once installed, reboot your computer and you should now be able to view SVG thumbnail previews in File Explorer.

Troubleshooting (Things to try if it does not work)

1. Check File Explorer options. Under the View tab, make sure “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option is UNCHECKED.
   
2. If you installed an application associated with an SVG file, you may have to re-associate the SVG file format to Internet Explorer. I have seen this happen to a few people. Both this and the previous issue is explained in the video.
3. If steps 1 & 2 do not work, it is recommended to reach out to the developers on the download page to see if they can assist.

How to get SVG thumbnails in Windows Explorer?

I can open them in browser just OK, but how can I have thumbnails in the Windows Explorer?

Edit: I installed Renesis Player as suggested by this answer, but it does not work for me, probably because I have 64-bit system.

Use this awesome SVG thumbnail shell extension which works fine in Windows 7 & Windows 8 & Windows 10 (both 64-bit and 32-bit):

If you still have problems to view the thumbnails after installing this shell extension please refer to these instructions how to reset your icon cache in Windows 7/8.

On Windows 10 after installing try changing your SVG file association (the «Open With»). By changing it something somehow gets refreshed and it starts working.

In regards to the answer given by geo, in the event someone needs to rebuild the IconCache.db and wants to give a go at not needing to reboot try the following batch.

Adobe Illustrator isn’t the only way to do this, nor is it the best way to do this.

Follow the link he provided to the SVG Explorer Extension. Download and install Dotz Software SVG Explorer Extension, aka DSSEE.

Once installed, open Task Manager and kill all instances of explorer.exe. From the Task Manager menu, choose File->Run new task menu. In the dialog box, simply type explorer and hit OK.

NOTE: Please do the above step only if you’re comfortable with killing and restarting processes through the Task Manager. If not, then simply reboot your system so that the new explorer extension can load.

From then on, all SVG images will show up as thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

This extension has worked perfectly for me on both Win7_x64 and Win8_x64! In fact, I was recently pleasantly surprised to learn that it displays thumbnails for compressed SVGZ images as seamlessly as it does the non-compressed versions.

NOTE (2014/07/17):

Per the comment by John Rasch, if you can’t see the SVG thumbnails after following the steps above, you can clear your icon cache using the following batch file:

Copy this to RebuildIconCache.bat and run it as Administrator. It will kill all Windows Explorer processes, which is required before you can delete the icon cache, then delete the icon cache, and, finally, reboot your system.

EDIT (2015/12/08):

As noted by @user1698811 below, the last line, «shutdown /r /f /t 5 /d 02:04», can simply be replaced with «explorer.exe», getting rid of the need to reboot.

I know this question was asked about Windows 7, but I thought it would be useful to add instructions for Windows 8 and above.

Windows 8 introduced a new icon and thumbnail cache system. Instead of a single file containing the entire icon cache, Windows 8 uses multiple cache files, based on the size and type of icon. These files are stored in «%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer». As an example, that directory on my system includes the following files:

As a result, in order to clear the icon cache in Windows 8 or above, you would need to delete all of the ‘iconcache_*.db’ files in the above directory.

Note that, in addition to the above files, Windows 8 still retains the «%LOCALAPPDATA%\IconCache.db» file. I honestly don’t know if this file is used or not, but, to be thorough, it would be best to continue to delete that file as well.

Therefore, for Windows 8 and above, we have the RebuildIconCache8.bat file as follows:

How to View SVG Thumbnails in Windows Explorer

If you’re a graphics designer, illustrator, web designer or have worked extensively with XML code and/or HTML code, you might be familiar with Scalable Vector Graphics. SVGs are vector image types that have been around for nearly eighteen years now, and yet, they don’t seem to have proper Windows support. You cannot open a SVG file in any of Windows’ stock image viewers (like Windows Photo Viewer) nor edit them in applications such as Paint.

Unlike rasterized images or raster graphics which are made up of dots and pixels, vector images are code-based and made up of a collection of mathematically placed curves, dots, shapes and texts. This is why they can be resized without losing quality. Applications like Paint and Windows Photo Viewer were intended to view and edit raster graphics, not vector graphics. Handling vector images can be quite tricky, and even Paint 3D doesn’t have support for most vectors.

While there are several applications you can use to create vector images, sometimes you just need a viewing solution and not a full image editor.

Here are a few ways to view SVG files in Windows.

Using SVG Viewer Extension

The SVG viewer extension for Windows is a shell extension that enables Windows File Explorer to render SVG thumbnails.

There is a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version. Before downloading the extension installation software, make sure you know your computer and operating system architecture. If you’re inclined, you can also view the source code.

1. After you’ve downloaded the necessary setup file, navigate to it in Windows Explorer and run it. Since the publisher is pretty obscure or unknown, Windows will warn you against running it. Click on “Run” and/or “Yes” on the next screen.

2. Once the setup is running, click on the next button on the setup welcome screen.

3. Read through the agreement on the next screen, and if you’re happy with it, click on the “I accept the agreement” radio button, then click on the “Next” button.

4. Choose the destination folder. I suggest you leave it as it is and click on next.

5. The final screen allows you to review the installation details. If you’re happy with them, you can click on “Install.”

Testing the extension and viewing/organising your files

1. Go to a folder where all or a bunch of your SVGs are located.

2. Ensure that you’re viewing them as large or extra-large icons (as opposed to a list or details).

A handy keyboard shortcut for this is Ctrl + Shift + 2 .

What you’ll notice about the thumbnails is that for every thumbnail there is another thumbnail embedded inside (thumbnailception). This is my favourite aspect of this shell extension. Not only does it show you the thumbnail of the SVG, but it also shows you the default application used to open it.

Final Word

In the future I hope Microsoft gives native support to SVGs or that someone at least develops a codec that enables us to view SVGs natively. Until then, we can always use this shell extension in unison with our browsers.
