The firewall ports necessary for file and printer sharing are not open (ports 445 and 139).

Impact

Computers will not be able to access shared folders and other Server Message Block (SMB)-based network services on this server.

Resolution

Enable File and Printer Sharing to communicate through the computer’s firewall.

Membership in the Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To open the firewall ports to enable file and printer sharing

Open Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click Windows Firewall.

In the left pane, click Advanced settings, and in the console tree, click Inbound Rules.

Under Inbound Rules, locate the rules File and Printer Sharing (NB-Session-In) and File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In).

For each rule, right-click the rule, and then click Enable Rule.

I recently had a windows update and since then my printer will not print. Say firewall blocking printer. When I’m on the printer program it says network not connected but on windows it shows it as being connected.

I had the same problem with Windows 10. After the Windows update the printer wouldn’t print from my computer while the printer still worked fine on other computers. Turned the fire wall off. The printer shows on the add printer list and is highlighted green but it can’t be selected!

Screwed around for hours trying Windows and Brother trouble shooting and after a while I noticed that low and behold one of the trouble shooter had the printer print out the printer data info so the computer can run the printer but I suspect something in the update is hiding the printer from normal printer access!

Windows 10 Firewall blocking Brother printers [EXPERT FIX]

Firewalls monitor network traffic and can block network connections for some programs and hardware. Windows 10 includes its own Windows Defender Firewall that might block Brother printers and other models for some users. Thus, the affected users can’t utilize their Brother printers when firewalls block them.

Why is Windows Firewall blocking my printer?

1. Turn Off the Windows 10 Firewall

  1. The most obvious, and perhaps straightforward, way to stop Windows Defender Firewall blocking a printer is to turn off WDF. Users can do that in Windows 10 by clicking the Type here to search button on the taskbar.
  2. Then enter ‘Windows Defender Firewall’ as the search keyword for the firewall’s Control Panel applet.
  3. Click Windows Defender Firewall to open that Control Panel applet window.
  4. Click Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off to open the options shown directly below.
  5. Then select the two Turn off Windows Defender Firewall radio buttons to turn off the WDF.
  6. Press the OK button.

2. Set Up Inbound Rules for Brother Printer Ports

  1. However, users can open the WDF’s ports for Brother printers to remove the firewall block without turning the firewall off. To do that, users need to set up inbound rule exceptions by clicking Advanced settings on the Windows Defender Firewall Control Panel applet.
  2. Next, click Inbound Rules on the window shown directly below.
  3. Select New Rule on the right of the WDF Advanced Security window to open the New Inbound Rule Wizard.
  4. Select the Port option, and click the Next button.
  5. Select the UDP option.
  6. Then click Specific local ports.
  7. Next, enter ‘54925’ in the text box, which is the external and internal port number for Brother network scanning.
  8. Press the Next button.
  9. Select the Allow the connection option, and click the Next button.
  10. Select all the profile check boxes, and click the Next button.
  11. The enter a title for the new rule. Users can also add some extra rule details in the other text box.
  12. Press the Finish button.
  13. Repeat the above steps to set up two more inbound rules for Brother port numbers 137 (for printing and remote setup) and 54926 (network PC fax).

3. Install MFL-Pro Suite

However, users should not need to set up inbound port rules for Brother printers when they’ve installed the MFL-Pro Suite. That software will automatically configure the firewall settings as required for Brother printers.

Users can install MFL-Pro Suite with a CD-ROM that comes with Brother printers. Alternatively, click the Click here link on the Install the MFL-Pro Suite page to download a setup wizard for that software.

4. Check the File and Printer Sharing Firewall Permission Setting

  1. Some users might also need to check the File and Printer Sharingfirewall permission setting. To do that, open the Windows Defender Firewall Control Panel applet.
  2. Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall to open the permission options below.
  3. Press the Changesettings button.
  4. Select all the check boxes for the File and Printer Sharing setting.
  5. Select the OK option.
