На выходе получается полноценная оперативная система, только располагается она на «виртуальном» железе. Получается, что внутри одной ОС создается другая, которая при запуске забирает часть ее оперативной памяти.

На данный момент существует несколько таких виртуальных машин. Они бывают платные и бесплатные. По большей части они ничем не различаются между собой. Разве что, в бесплатных функционал ограничен. Но в то же время, при полном образе можно легко запустить на mac программу для Windows.

How to play Windows games on your Mac without Windows

The Mac has plenty of games, but it’ll always get the short end of the stick compared to Windows. If you want to play the latest games on your Mac, you have no choice but to install Windows . or do you?

There are a few ways you can play Windows games on your Mac without having to dedicate a partition to Boot Camp or giving away vast amounts of hard drive space to a virtual machine app like VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop. Here are a few other options for playing Windows games on your Mac without the hassle or expense of having to install Windows.

GeForce Now

PC gaming on Mac? Yes you can, thanks to Nvidia’s GeForce Now. The service allows users to play PC games from Steam or Battle.net on macOS devices. Better still, the graphic power of these games resides on Nvidia’s servers. The biggest drawback: the service remains in beta, and there’s been no announcement when the first full release is coming or what a monthly subscription will cost.

For now, at least, the service is free to try and enjoy. All supported GeForce NOW titles work on Macs, and yes, there are plenty of them already available!

The Wine Project

The Mac isn’t the only computer whose users have wanted to run software designed for Windows. More than 20 years ago, a project was started to enable Windows software to work on POSIX-compliant operating systems like Linux. It’s called The Wine Project, and the effort continues to this day. OS X is POSIX-compliant, too (it’s Unix underneath all of Apple’s gleam, after all), so Wine will run on the Mac also.

Wine is a recursive acronym that stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator. It’s been around the Unix world for a very long time, and because OS X is a Unix-based operating system, it works on the Mac too.

As the name suggests, Wine isn’t an emulator. The easiest way to think about it is as a compatibility layer that translates Windows Application Programming Interface (API) calls into something that the Mac can understand. So when a game says «draw a square on the screen,» the Mac does what it’s told.

You can use straight-up Wine if you’re technically minded. It isn’t for the faint of heart, although there are instructions online, and some kind souls have set up tutorials, which you can find using Google. Wine doesn’t work with all games, so your best bet is for you to start searching for which games you’d like to play and whether anyone has instructions to get it working on the Mac using Wine.

Note: At the time of this writing, The Wine Project does not support macOS 10.15 Catalina.

CrossOver Mac

CodeWeavers took some of the sting out of Wine by making a Wine-derived app called CrossOver Mac. CrossOver Mac is Wine with specialized Mac support. Like Wine, it’s a Windows compatibility layer for the Mac that enables some games to run.

CodeWeavers has modified the source code to Wine, made some improvements to configuration to make it easier, and provided support for their product, so you shouldn’t be out in the cold if you have trouble getting things to run.

My experience with CrossOver — like Wine — is somewhat hit or miss. Its list of actual supported games is pretty small. Many other unsupported games do, in fact work — the CrossOver community has many notes about what to do or how to get them to work, which are referenced by the installation program. Still, if you’re more comfortable with an app that’s supported by a company, CrossOver may be worth a try. What’s more, a free trial is available for download, so you won’t be on the hook to pay anything to give it a shot.

Boxer

If you’re an old-school gamer and have a hankering to play DOS-based PC games on your Mac, you may have good luck with Boxer. Boxer is a straight-up emulator designed especially for the Mac, which makes it possible to run DOS games without having to do any configuring, installing extra software, or messing around in the Mac Terminal app.

With Boxer, you can drag and drop CD-ROMs (or disk images) from the DOS games you’d like to play. It also wraps them into self-contained «game boxes» to make them easy to play in the future and gives you a clean interface to find the games you have installed.

Boxer is built using DOSBox, a DOS emulation project that gets a lot of use over at GOG.com, a commercial game download service that houses hundreds of older PC games that work with the Mac. So if you’ve ever downloaded a GOG.com game that works using DOSBox, you’ll have a basic idea of what to expect.

Some final thoughts

In the end, programs like the ones listed above aren’t the most reliable way to play Windows games on your Mac, but they do give you an option.

Of course, another option is to run Windows on your Mac, via BootCamp or a virtual machine, which takes a little know-how and a lot of memory space on your Mac’s hard drive.

The Sexy Brutale for Mac Community port.

It’s always great to have testers for Porting Kit. The community makes the product alive :). It seems that people found out about the 64bit/D3D11 Steam port and they are testing their favorite games in it to see if they work. And I got multiple e-mails (thanks everyone) about it with some cool games where I will do more post about. But to start with I added a separate community port for this one: The Sexy Brutale (thanks Ikemitsu for testing). The game seems to run without issues. I saw the game is also on GOG.com, so I will request the game from there and add that source as well soon.

Basic Portingkit Install Instructions Steam games:
1. Get the cheap steam serial of The Sexy Brutale here from Kinguin
2. Always read the “notes” of the game description first for additional steps!
3. Go to the library server tab and select the game you want to install and click “Install”
4. Portingkit will create the wrapper and locate your setup file in your download folder
5. The installation of the game will start, run through the install wizard.
6. Porting kit will say it has finished successfully.
7. Go to your local library tab and select the game and click “play”!
9. Login into the Windows Steam and activate the serial and download and play!!

Steambuild 64bit/D3D11 port in Porting Kit

Today we added the Steambuild 64bit/D3D11 port into Porting Kit. The port contains the basic build 64bit build with D3D11, including VCRuntime 2017 support. You can use this port to try all you 64bit DirectX 11 games in it. Quite a bunch should work in it now, but no guarantees of course, and AMD Radeon should probably better be supported then Nvidia and Intel Iris/Intel HD cards. Let us know if you have a game fully working in it so we can add it into the Porting Kit Database 🙂 When you want cheap steam keys, then go to Kinguin to get some 64bit DirectX11 games. Else Heart.break for Catalina 10.15.4+ and Big Sur 11+ added to Porting Kit

Golden oldie back to Porting Kit: Else Heart.break for Mac! The game had already a Mac version for Mojave 10.14.x and below, but now the game is Catalina 10.15.4+ Compatible! So if you own the game and have Mac OS Catalina or Big Sur, then you can play it again using Porting Kit

***Because this game has an old Mac version on GOG, you have to change “System” to Windows on your GOG Account download page, otherwise you will download old Mac game files instead of the Windows “Offline backup setup files” which are required for Porting Kit.**

Release Porting Kit 4.1.17

We have a new update for Porting Kit 4 today! This time we are on 4.1.17! In this release we have builtin a couple of extra features (which we had in Porting Kit 3 as well) and a fix. Let’s check them out in separate subjects.

DXVK fix:
This version has a bugfix for Directx11 support for 64 ports like: Age of Empires 2 DE, Age of Empires 3 DE, Skyrim SE, Hitman Absolution, Freedom Fighter, Witcher 3. There sneaked in a bug which has now been resolved in this version.

“Install now” functionality on the website:
This worked in PK3 already but now also in PK4, yes I am talking about the “install now” button on the portingkit.com website. You probably saw the button “install now” when looked into the Porting Kit game database on the website. Now this functionality will work in PK4. It doesn’t matter if Porting Kit is closed or open, when you click on “install now”, Porting Kit will prompt straight away the install wizard to install the port. It’s a great feature and it saves you from searching the game in the Porting Kit app.

“Clear Caches” option under tools:
We heard this request from users who were missing that option in Porting Kit 4. With this option (which you can find using the top bar menu under “Tools”) you can clear:
– Wineskin Library caches
– Clear Winetricks
– Porting Kit Local Cache
– Porting Kit Temp folder
This option may come in handy when you ever have some issues regarding Porting kit.

Porting Kit 4 – “Experimental branch” option (Beta mode).

Since a couple of weeks ago we added an experimental “testing/beta” branch to Porting Kit to test new functionality and bug fixes. If you like to attend in this “Beta” group, then in your Porting Kit settings you can easily do that. You will be on the front row having access first to all new fixes and features within Porting Kit. When the Beta mode has issues please let us know so we can fix them before releasing it to the production PK branch. In that case you can turn off experimental mode until the issues are fixed.

Recent Features in the Experimental/Beta mode:
– Double-click an exe and porting Kit will pop-up and option for a new install or in an existing port.
– “Install now” option will work from the Porting.com website.
– Installation process-bar for Porting Kit updates. (will be visible in the next update)

Important bug fix:
The experimental branch has also a bugfix for Directx11 support for 64 ports like: Age of Empires 2 DE, Age of Empires 3 DE, Skyrim SE, Hitman Absolution, Freedom Fighter, Witcher 3. So if you want to install those games, please turn this experimental mode on before installing these games. We will have this fix in the production branch in a few days. So if you ran into this problem, turn on the experimental mode and install the 64bit/D3d11 game again.

You can automatically attend by selecting the “enable experimental features” checkbox in your Porting Kit preferences.
