Windows hotkey maximize window

How to make Internet shortcut open maximized

In Vista Business 64 sp1, how do I make a short cut to a web location open in a maximized window (IE 8 is the default browser)?

Also, how can I resize the IE window that opens when I click the shortcut and have Vista remember that size when I use the shortcut the next time?

Try this with your Shortcut IE window.

  • Open a single Internet Explorer window to the smaller size.
  • Drag the corners of the window until it completely fills the screen. Do not use the maximize button to enlarge the window.
  • Hold down the Ctrl key, keep it depressed, and using the mouse click File and then Exit on the menu bar. Do not use the «X» in the upper right corner to close the window.
  • Internet Explorer should now open in a full window.
  • If it still opens to a smaller size repeat the above instructions, substituting the «Shift» key for the «Ctrl» key.

Not sure why Michael’s directions didn’t work.

Right click on your short cut, select properties, select Run Window Maximized.

For reasons known only to Microsoft, shortcuts to a web page do not have the option to «Run Window Maximized.» In fact, a shortcut to a web document does not even have the «Shortcut» or «Compatibility» tabs that a shortcut to a file on the local machine has. Instead, they have a «web document» tab. The web document tab does not include the «Run» or «Shortcut key» options available on the shortcut tab.

I have not tried this on my Vista machine, but on XP, you can work around this by making a shortcut not to the URL of the web page, but to your desired browser. This also lets you choose what browser opens when you click on the shortcut (a shortcut to a web page will open in the default browser only). You then include the URL as a parameter.

For example, if you put the following in the Target of a shortcut

    «C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe» «http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/category/w7itpro»

you will get a «normal» shortcut, including the shortcut tab which has both a place to enter a hotkey and a drop-down box to start Normal, Minimized, or Maximized. Clicking on this shortcut will open IE and go to the home page of these forums. (The double quotes are necessary for the path to the executable because of the spaces in the path; I don’t know if they also are necessary for the URL, but I do know that it works with the URL enclosed in double quotes.)

I had known about the «remember size» trick suggested by Mick Murphy but had forgotten the exact details and I was hoping that that trick would work. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to.

    Shortcut Action
Win + D Display the desktop.
Win + M Minimize all windows.
Win + Shift + M Restore minimized windows to the desktop.
Win + ↑ Maximize the window.
Win + ← Maximize the window to the left side of the screen.
Win + → Maximize the window to the right side of the screen.
Win + ↓ Minimize the window.
Win + Home Minimize all but the active window.
Win + Shift + ↑ Stretch the window to the top and bottom of the screen.

Currently as per my experience in Windows 10:

Restore Down The Maximized Window OR Minimize The Restored Window
    Win + Down Arrow

    Minimize The Maximized Window
    Win + Down Arrow (twice)

    Maximize The Restored Window
    Win + Up Arrow

I was looking for the same thing, and I want to refer to an answer by Sam Hasler who made an AutoHotKey script that adds a shortcut for that task.

In short, this is the script (you need ahk) — just save it as an .ahk file and put it in the startup folder (open it with shell:startup from the Run ):

Robert Hall wants a keyboard shortcut for maximizing a window.

There’s no way to do this with one keystroke. But you can do it with two.

If you want to maximize an application window, press ALT-SPACE. (In other words, hold down the Alt key while you press the space bar.) This will pop up the current application’s System menu—the same one you get if you click the little icon in the window’s top-left corner. Once the menu is up, pressing x will maximize the window. You can also press n to minimize it or, if it’s already maximized, r to restore it to its pre-maximized state.

What about a document window within an application? Assuming the application supports the Multiple Document Interface (MDI), press ALT-HYPHEN (in other words, hold down the Alt key while you press the hyphen or key) for the menu. Then follow the same instructions as above.

    Question

I know by using Windows + down arrow, the current application window can be restored / minimized, which I learned from http://www.techspot.com/blog/283/windows-7-improved-window-management-using-the-keyboard-hotkeys/ .

But this reduces a maximized windows first before minimizing it, and later when I switch to the window again, I need to press Windows + up arrow to maximize it, which is not handy enough.

So is there any key combination to minimize the window at once ?

This is still two steps. No single step shortcut?

I know no way. this worked since Windows 95.

    I see it, thanks.

    This works, thanks.

lol why would you need to know that? probably from letting the boss know about facebook?. lol

yeah it is working. but if i have opened more than two windows means it is not working

Use AutoHotKey together with WinMinimize (http://www.autohotkey.com/docs/commands/WinMinimize.htm).

For example, to remap the Print Screen button to minimize the active window, add this to your ahk script:

This might be an incredibly late response but, if it is one of the first windows in your taskbar, you can Maximize / Minimize the windows with WindowsKey + 1|2|3|4 etc.

Ex: I always have my browser in the first position of my taskbar, so I always maximize / minimize it with Windows + 1.

You need to know in which position is your window, but it is a one step way to do it. Hope it helped somebody 🙂
