Arrow keys

Alternatively referred to as cursor keys, direction keys, and navigation keys, the arrow keys are usually located between the standard section and the numeric pad on computer keyboards. It is made up of four keys: the left arrow (back arrow), up arrow, down arrow, and the right arrow (forward arrow). The picture is an example of what the arrow keys may look like on your keyboard.

Some keyboards, such as the Microsoft Natural Keyboard, may arrange these keys differently.

Overview of a keyboard

In the picture below, the Saitek gaming keyboard shows where the arrow keys can be found. Also, the numeric keypad can function as arrow keys when Num Lock is turned off.

Where are my arrow keys?

The arrow keys are found between your keyboard and your keypad, as shown in the picture above. For smaller keyboards and many laptop keyboards, the arrow keys may be moved below the Enter and the right Shift . Also, some compact keyboards may move the arrow keys to the keypad and switch between the keypad and arrow keys by pressing the Num Lock key.

How are arrow keys used?

Below is a list of the most common reasons why someone may use the arrow keys on their keyboard.

• Move the text cursor on the screen to insert or remove text.

If you hold down the Ctrl and press the Left arrow or Right arrow keys, it moves the cursor one word at a time instead of one character.

Practice using arrow keys

You can practice using the arrow keys by clicking anywhere in the following text box and then use the up, right, down, or left arrows to move around in the box.

• Move from one cell to another cell in a spreadsheet. Use the right and left arrow keys to move between columns, and up and down arrow keys to move between rows.
• Use in combination with other keys for shortcut keys. For example, pressing the Alt key and the Left arrow key in all Internet browsers takes you back one page.
• Move a character in a computer game.
• Select text. For example, hold down the Shift and press the arrow key in the direction you want to highlight text.
• Move the mouse pointer using the keyboard instead of the mouse.

Smile and the world smiles with you

Emojis aren’t just for your phone anymore! The new emoji keyboard in Windows 10 lets you express yourself like never before. To use it:

During text entry, type Windows logo key + . (period). The emoji keyboard will appear.

Select an emoji with the mouse, or keep typing to search through the available emojis for one you like.

Type all the symbols like a pro

Sometimes you need to type a character that isn’t on your keyboard, like an em-dash (—) or the copyright symbol (©). If you have a numeric keypad on your keyboard, you don’t have to find one and copy and paste, you can just do it! Here’s how:

Hold down the Alt key on your keyboard.

With the Alt key held down, type the four-digit code on the numeric keypad for the character you want. (Include the leading 0 if that’s required.)

Note: This only works on the numeric keypad. This won’t work on the row of numbers at the top of the keyboard.

Release the Alt key.

Windows key + arrow keys not working

I have encountered something strange on a pc.

I have one Windows 7 pc here where the shortkey combinations of Windows Key + the arrow keys are not working to minimize a window or to move it to the top/left/right of the screen.

Combinations like Windows Key + E to open the explorer work perfectly.

What could be the reason for this or what can be reset/checked in order to fix this problem?

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Make the mouse easier to use

Under ‘Make it easier to manage windows’:

Untick ‘Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen’.

1) Are you using a USB keyboard?
2) Have you made any changes on your computer recently?

3) Is this a Laptop or a Desktop?

Try using the Arrow keys on other programs. Check if they are functional.

This issue can occur if the Arrow keys on the keyboard are faulty.

Try connecting a different keyboard to your computer. Try the shortcut keys once again. Check if they works.
Since you are able to use the other shortcut keys, means that the keyboard works fine. This might only mean that the Arrow keys are faulty.

Most Laptops have “Fn” key or a Function Lock key. This key can be used to Enable and Disable the Arrow keys. Check if the Arrow keys function after toggling the Fn key.
