Windows Live Messenger for Windows 8, Windows 10: Where is it?

If you are looking for Windows Live Messenger in Windows 10, you will be disappointed to hear that it is no longer available.

If you’re like me, then you have a strange passion for old software or, to be more precise, for software that is now outdated. And such an example is the Windows Live Messenger, so with the appearance of Windows 10, Windows 8, this became obsolete.

This is very similar to what has happened with Outlook Express, another “oldie”, in Windows 7 and Windows 10, Windows 8. Those of you with a nostalgic feeling for Windows Live Messenger is probably looking for it on Google. Look no more.

Windows Live Messenger was shut down in 2013

The last time when I checked for Windows Live Messenger was on Microsoft‘s official website, on the Download Center. And guess what, it was still there, or, at least the search result was.

Thus, when you click on it to download, the following message appears:

Windows Live Messenger is gone in Windows 10, Windows 8

The sad truth is that Microsoft is retiring Windows Live Messenger and some users have already been migrated to Skype since March 15th. So, the simple step is to embrace the Skype experience but we’re strongly suggesting you try the desktop version first, prior to the Windows Store one. We just didn’t like it that much. Thus, by the end of April 2013, Microsoft has completely phased out support for Windows Live Messenger, so if you’re looking for that “old” experience on Windows 10, Windows 8, it saddens me to say that it will be impossible.

This was the natural thing to happen, even before Microsoft had bought Skype for an immense amount of $8.5 billion. Windows Live Messenger wasn’t present by default in Windows 7, as you were only able to use it after installing or after using services from a different company. What will most likely follow is that Microsoft accounts will be linked to Skype names for a seamless transition. This is a quick explanation from a smart TheVerge commenter on the differences between Skype and Windows Live Messenger:

Skype was peer to peer, i.e. messages could be sent only when both parties were online. Messenger stored messages on MS servers but now both Skype is running on Messenger’s servers so that’s solved. Messenger was available from any computer, you only had to be logged into your Live account via any browser. Skype required desktop client which led to issues on Mac and Linux with bad updates or lack of updates.

Now that’s solved (well, will be this month or so) because Skype is coming to outlook.com. Basically, Skype was better at video calls, Messenger better at messaging. Now they are both the same thing so it should be the best thing ever. New Skype is a competitor to iChat, Google Voice and Google Talk all at once

Can we get it back?

Unfortunately, no, unless you are living in China, where it will still remain active. You can still try and install the IM+ app in the Windows Store, but from my own experience, syncing your contacts on Skype will actually prove to be pleasant, so don’t be afraid of doing it. If you encounter some issues, though, you can always voice your concern in the official forums.

[UPDATE] Microsoft introduced Skype instead of Windows Live Messenger, but users were not happy about the updates. Microsoft was focused on the corporate market and Skype was not user-friendly any longer. Even so, Microsoft forces Skype users to install the new version on May 25.

The good news is the traditional Skype app for desktop is once again available for download from the official Skype website and it’s listed as the ‘classic Skype’. Although, users are warned that some of its features may differ when using Windows 10 Anniversary Update or higher versions of the operating system.

Сервису Games for Windows Live осталось жить меньше года

После того как на прошлой неделе Microsoft объявила о скором закрытии сетевого магазина Games for Windows Live — Marketplace, нам показалось, что и сам сервис тоже больше не жилец. Сейчас эти прогнозы практически подтвердились — причем не сами собой, а с подачи сотрудников сайта xbox.com.

Намедни на страничке поддержки Age of Empires Online было замечено сообщение: «Сервис Games for Windows Live прекратит свое существование 1 июля 2014 года. Несмотря на то что Age of Empires Online доступна в Steam, для ее работы требуется Games for Windows Live. Однако пока вы можете продолжать наслаждаться всеми возможностями Age of Empires Online — игра будет сохранять полную функциональность вплоть до закрытия сервиса».

Что характерно, сообщение было вскоре удалено. Но ошибки, скорее всего, не было — просто кто-то слил информацию раньше положенного срока, а официально о смерти Games for Windows Live Microsoft наверняка сообщит в ближайшие дни.

Впрочем, это как раз тот самый случай, когда о мертвом либо хорошо, либо вообще никак. Пользователи постоянно жаловались на обилие недочетов и спорных особенностей Live.

Девелоперы и издатели, которые до поры до времени использовали GFWL для мультиплеера, списков лидеров и прочих фич в своих проектах, начинают потихоньку отходить от падающего сервиса Microsoft, чтобы ненароком не зашибло. Capcom, к примеру, которая интегрировала его во многие свои игры (Street Fighter 4, Dead Rising 2, Resident Evil 5), недавно заявила, что Ultra Street Fighter 4 будет работать на какой-то другой платформе. Ну а вчера ручкой Games for Windows Live помахала Warner Bros..

Microsoft простится с Games for Windows Live

Microsoft окончательно отказалась от развития своего сетевого сервиса. Компания объявила, что планирует закрыть Games for Windows Live 1 июля следующего года. До этого срока сервис продолжит функционировать в привычном режиме.

Вместе с Games for Windows Live, скорее всего, будет закрыта и сетевая стратегия Age of Empires Online, которая привязана к сетевому сервису Microsoft. Издатели пока не сделали официального заявления на этот счет, однако на странице службы поддержки Xbox.com была обнаружена следующая запись: «Games for Windows Live отключат 1 июля 2014 года. Age of Empires Online доступна в Steam, но для работы игры необходим Games for Windows Live. Вы можете по-прежнему наслаждаться всеми возможностями Age of Empires Online, так как сервис продолжит функционировать на 100% до 1 июля». Через несколько часов эту запись удалили.

Отметим, что издатели и разработчики уже давно начали отказываться от Games for Windows Live в пользу инструментария Steam. Например, так поступили создатели Street Fighter 4, Dead Rising 2, Resident Evil 5 и Batman: Arkham Origins.

Закрытие сервиса Games for Windows — Live

Значится так, в преддверии выхода Batman: Arkham Origins решил перепройти предыдущие игры серии, да не абы как, а на 100%. Прошел Arkham Asylum, решил все загадки, нашел все секреты, прошел дополнительные карты. Недавно приступил к Arkham City. Вчера я был близок к завершению игры на 100%, прошел сюжетную кампанию, почти все дополнительные миссии, почти все загадки. Прошел игру примерно на 80%. Сегодня решил-таки добить это дело. Сел, запустил игру. И, собственно, то, к чему я всё это: стим обновил Arkham City. Золотое издание игры вышло чуть больше года назад, и обновление меня сразу слегка смутило. Запустив игру, я не нашел моих сохранений. В панике бросился смотреть, что там такого стим наобновлял, и он мне выдал:
Dear Batman Arkham Fans — Microsoft has begun the process of closing down Windows Live services over the next year. To make sure there is no interrupted service, we will be moving the game to Steam for verification and update services for both the Base and GOTY versions of Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City.

If you purchased either of the games on Steam all you have to do is let Steam download the latest patch and you will be fine.

If you purchased the games somewhere else you will need to enter the code in Steam. (You can find steps to do this on the bottom of this.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to continue playing from your current save. You will need to start a new game.

Going forward you do not have to worry about where you stored that disc. If you switch computers or go to a friend’s house you simply need to download Steam, log into your account, then go to the library and select to install your game.
Если в кратце — Windows Life скоро закрывается, и стим «адаптирует» игры с ним под себя. Сейвы при этом слетают… Представляю, какие из-за этого могут начаться недовольства, учитывая что много игр в стиме работают с сервисом Windows Life. Так что, если хотите сохранить сейвы, отмените автообновление игр, если таковые имеются. Мне грустно и я подавлен. Ну хоть больше не будет докучать надоедливый и неудобный Windows Life…

Исправляем ошибки Games for Windows Live: Отсутствие Xlive.dll или проблемы с установкой gfwlive Marketplace

Вряд-ли у кого-то возникают проблемы с системой Games for Windows Live, однако, возможно и остались те, кто не может запустить игры по типу GTA IV, Section 8: Prejudice . Я был один из тех, кто был в такой ситуации и поверьте, всё ГОРАААЗДО проще, чем кажется! (Да, этот гайд может быть бесполезным, но эй, может и нет, откуда нам знать?)

Невозможно установить Games For Windows Marketplace

Начнем с простого! Вы устанавливаете спокойно себе GfWLive(Отныне будем его сокращать), как вдруг выскакивает ТАКАЯ ОШИБКА

И казалось бы всё, жизнь окончена. Но что бы её возобновить следуйте инструкции:

1. Нажмите «Папка журнала»
2. Дальше идём туда

3. Далее идём в данную папку

4. Жмём на этот установщик(Если будет 2 файла, то установите оба! У меня просто осталось как анинсталлер) и устанавливаем

И ВУАЛЯ! МАРКЕТПЛЭЙС УСТАНОВЛЕН!!

Xlive.dll проблема и как решать?

Ошибка возникает в том случае, если вы такой же как и я, удалили Marketplace, но даже с успехом его установки есть вероятность появления ошибки
