How to setup Hotmail/Windows Live Email on your iPhone

About a week ago Microsoft finally rolled out the support for Hotmail/Windows Live emails so that they can be synced by the Mail app on your iPhone or iPhone 3G.

I have received a few emails with questions and problems, and so today I will post a brief step by step instruction on how to get Hotmail/Windows Live Mail working on your iPhone.

How to set-up Hotmail/Windows Live Email Accounts on iPhone

1.) Go to Settings. Tap on Mail, Contacts, and Calendar. Then under the Accounts heading, tap Add Account…. Then tap Other.

2.) Under Name, enter your Name. Under Address, enter your Hotmail or Windows Live Email address. Example: your_email@hotmail.com

3.) Under Password, enter your email address password corresponding to the email address you just provided.

4.) Under Description, type a description. Example: My Hotmail Email. Then tap Save. A message will appear regarding Windows Live Plus. By-pass it by tapping Next in the top right corner of the iPhone.

5.) Under the Accounts heading, tap the email account you just created

6.) Under the Outgoing Mail Server heading, tap SMTP. Under the Primary Server heading, tap smtp.live.com

7.) Ensure Server in On. Ensure Use SSL is On. Ensure Authentication is Password. Ensure Server Port is 587 (or Port 25, apparently both work).

8.) Now tap SMTP in the top left corner of the iPhone screen. Then tap the top left corner of the iPhone screen again to return to the previous menu. Then tap Advanced.

9.) Under the Incoming Settings heading, ensure Use SSL is On. Ensure Authentication is Password. Ensure Server Port is 995.

10.) Tap the top left corner of your iPhone screen three times to return to the previous menu. Then click the home button.

Syncing iPhone to Windows 10 — how to maintain Live Photos effects?

I just realized that when I sync my photos from iPhone to Windows 10 (via USB cable), the live photo effects are lost. I transferred over a year of photos and erased them from the phone and am wondering if there is any way to retrieve the live photos effect.

If not, is there something I can do the next time so I can keep the live photos intact even when I bring them to a PC?

(fwiw, I used «import pictures and videos» option on Windows 10 to sync)

View iPhone Live Photos on Windows 10 without additional software

As said before, iPhone creates a MOV file as well as a JPEG image when you capture a Live Photo. The easiest way to view your Live Photos on your Windows 10 PC is to transfer these MOV files (connect your iPhone to PC > open File Explorer > iPhone > Internet storage > DCIM) to your PC and then double-click on a video file to play it using the default Films & TV app. We recommend use a video player that automatically plays all the videos in a folder (GOM player does this best) to quickly play all MOV files.

If those live photo effects are stored as mov files, I would have thought/hoped that the «import pictures and videos» utility would be able to bring those movie files in automatically. I don’t think it does. Do you know if there is a way to automatically bring those in when importing?

If you are using Windows Live Mail (online version) with Windows 7, here’s what I did. Hope it helps someone.

Before you do the following steps, in Windows Live Mail, export your contacts as a CSV file and save it where you can easily locate it.

1. Click on the little WINDOWS Ball in the lower left-hand corner of your screen (this is the same as clicking START).

2. Type WAB in the search box. The first thing that comes up SHOULD BE a file called WAB.EXE. Double-click so it opens up—it may or may not be empty. This file is NOT the same file as the windows live file so don’t worry about overwriting anything.

3. Click IMPORT at the top of the screen.

4. Select CSV, then click IMPORT again. It will ask you to find the file you want to import. Find the backup you made.

5. Once it’s done importing, you should see all your contacts.

6. Plug in your Apple device—iphone/ipad.

7. iTunes will launch automatically. Give it a minute to completely load etc.

8. At the top of the screen you will see: SUMMARY INFO APPS MUSIC MOVIES TV SHOWS etc. etc.

9. Click on INFO

10. You will see ‘SYNC CONTACTS WITH’. Make sure there is a check in the box and that after ‘with’ you see WINDOWS CONTACTS. If you don’t see WINDOWS CONTACTS, click on the drop-down menu and select it.

11. Then click on SYNC at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen and let it run.
