Longhorn was the codename for the planned successor of Windows XP. The project was reset and replaced with a new project — Longhorn Omega-13 which was later renamed Windows Vista. Early builds of Windows Vista were often referred to as «Longhorn», causing confusion.
One of the original — and largest — changes is that, with «Longhorn», the .NET Framework would be integrated into the core Windows platform, deprecating the traditional Win32 API. During development, portions of the operating system were rewritten, causing memory leaks and instability, particularly in Windows Explorer.
Contrary to popular belief, most of the early builds of «Longhorn» are not based on Windows XP, but Windows Server 2003 release candidate code. The xpclient release branch, dedicated to XP, spun off from the main branch in 2001. The main branch continued to compile Server 2003 builds, until the dnsrv branch, dedicated to Server 2003, spun off from the main branch in 2002. At that point, the main branch began compiling Longhorn builds. [1]

History
Codename
«Longhorn» was chosen as the codename for the operating system to represent its initial status as an internim release between Windows XP (codenamed «Whistler») and «Blackcomb». Whistler and Blackcomb are names of mountains in British Columbia, Canada, [2] [3] and Longhorn is the name of a saloon located in between the two mountains, representing the operating system’s initial status as an internim release between the two products. [4] Bill Gates would later state that this choice for a codename of the operating system was «a bit random». [5]

Windows Longhorn Pre-Reset
Windows Longhorn was the pre-release codename for Windows Vista and was the successor to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (built from NT 5.2 codebase). Development on the OS started in May 2001 and went through two unique development cycles separated by a development reset in 2004. The reset occurred as Microsoft’s development staff had lost focus on the project as a whole and what was required to be done in order to bring it to market. Features were being written into the OS at an alarming rate with a significant lack of QA or vision of true requirement. This combined with Microsoft’s trustworthy computing initiatives caused the reset.
Several features of Longhorn planned that were actually shipped include the glass replicating Aero theme (which followed the Slate and Jade themes from earlier builds), along with the Windows Sidebar — although this was shipped as a standalone utility where as most builds (at least in pre-reset) shipped this as part of explorer.exe. Numerous improvements to the Windows Explorer, along with an updated Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, instant search, new 3-d games and other items made it into the final version of Windows Vista.
Release notes
Windows Longhorn existed as a continuation of the Windows 2003 codebase although after build 4094 development was reset; restarted from scratch as the original Longhorn builds were growing in complication (described as ‘a mess’) and Microsoft introduced a new focus on security. These are the pre-reset builds.

Windows Longhorn build 4093 is the last ‘main’ compile of the original Longhorn project (based on the Server 2003 RC1 code-base) before development was reset with build 3790.1232. This build was leaked on 28 August 2006, shortly after the closure of the original OSBetaArchive, and was labeled a farewell release. It is highly unstable; which was typical of most later Longhorn builds. It was also the last pre-reset Longhorn build to be leaked, and one of the last to be compiled. Many applications and features are unstable works-in-progress, and might not function as intended. The development reset began a mere four hours and fourteen minutes after the compilation of this build, at 16:29 (although many teams had already been working with the new codebase since at least 3 August 2004). Development moved to a new code base, which eventually became Windows Vista. ContentsSetup [ edit | edit source ]Although setup is mostly similar to previous builds of Windows Longhorn, a few places have been changed slightly, mostly just text being changed. Enter product key Review and adjust Enter computer name Setup is copying files Features [ edit | edit source ]
UAC [ edit | edit source ]User Account Control has received a few uplifts in this build, now granting a tick dialogue in the properties of an application on whether non-admins can open said app or not. The dialogue itself upon opening an unknown application has also been modified. MXPlayer [ edit | edit source ]It has a new version of Media Player called MXPlayer. It can be accessed by running MXPlayer.exe in the installation directory, but it is incomplete and a lot of the options don’t work or result in assertion errors. Avalon Applications [ edit | edit source ]This build includes an Avalon-based Windows Movie Maker application. However, the application is highly unstable and the debug prompts/assertion error messages that plague it make it nearly unusable. The Movie Maker can be found in C:\Program Files\Movie Maker 3\MovieMaker.exe . This build also marks the return of the Display Properties dialog first seen in build 3683. However, most of the links simply redirects to the Windows XP options. An Avalon-based Power dialog can be found in this build as well, though it is unstable. Likewise, there is also an Avalon Wireless Presentation application in this build. The applets are LHDesk.exe , PowerCpl.exe , and WPWizard.exe , all of which are found respectively in the SYSTEM32 folder. A prototype Color Management control panel (based on Avalon) is found in this build as well. During componentization of the build, an error was made within the manifests for the main Control Panel executable, leading to the executable not being present in the component store and its main DLL component duplicated. The component in question is microsoft.windows.controlpanel.colormanagement . However, it is believed that the missing executable was a stub, starting the main application code found through another component named system.windows.explorer.controlpanel.colormanagement.dll ; the launcher stub for the former can be reproduced using an IDE. The control panel applet is extremely unfinished, as shown by the other pages accessible on the right either crashing or doing nothing due to the lack of functions found within the DLL file. Prototype Windows Product Activation [ edit | edit source ]Inside C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Windows\v6.0.4030\ is a file named LicenseUI.exe . It contains dialogs for a prototype version of Windows Product Activation, however most of the dialogs don’t load and those that remain are highly unstable and incomplete. Some of the dialogs can be run via C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Windows\v6.0.4030\LicenseUI.exe -type=w -dlg=Y , where Y is a number from 1 through 10. Only dialog options 2, 3 and 6 load correctly. The sixth dialogue mentions about both Home and Premium SKUs of Windows Longhorn, which indicated that there was going to be said SKUs. These SKUs would later become Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium. Asides from the SKUs, the entire list of LicenseUI pages can be found here. Fixes [ edit | edit source ]Fixes from 408x [ edit | edit source ]
Bugs and quirks [ edit | edit source ]Installation [ edit | edit source ]
Upgrade [ edit | edit source ]Attempting to upgrade from other builds is not possible, causing either of these 2 things:
No mouse driver in WinPE [ edit | edit source ]On some computers and hypervisors, this build’s WinPE doesn’t support the mouse, so you must use the keyboard to navigate the WinPE. This seems to be related to using a PS/2 mouse as well as some USB mice, as some USB mice seems to work fine for the setup. Timebomb [ edit | edit source ]Unlike other Longhorn builds, it contains a broken timebomb and can be installed on the current date. Outlook Express [ edit | edit source ]Outlook Express does not start due to registry errors and certain dependencies on WinFS. Explorer [ edit | edit source ]
Themes [ edit | edit source ]Changing the theme will leave the taskbar without a visual style, reminiscent build 4074’s theming service bug. This can be fixed by restarting explorer.exe or changing to another theme (except Windows Classic). The navigation buttons of Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer and other Avalon-based applications will disappear if the application is in use. Control Panel [ edit | edit source ]
Drivers [ edit | edit source ]
Safe mode [ edit | edit source ]The Safe mode is usually broken and results in a bugcheck with code 0x7B. This is because the Safeboot key, located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control is largely incomplete and missing a lot of entries. Restoring the key from a build with working safe mode enables this build to boot in safe mode, but the display is not initialized properly which leads to no video output (which is seen as a black screen). |
