Windows Media Player errors
Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020
We recommend you move to a Windows 10 PC to continue to receive security updates from Microsoft.
You may get an error message while using Windows Media Player but without any specific info about the error. Here are a few common pitfalls:
If the error involves a playback problem, you may not have the right codec on your PC to play that file. For more information about codecs, see Codecs: frequently asked questions.
If you can’t burn a CD or DVD, does the disc already have content on it? If so, make sure the disc is rewritable and that you erase the existing content before you try to burn new content onto it.
If Windows Media Player stopped working correctly after the latest update from Windows Update, you can verify that the update is the problem by using System Restore. To do this:
Click the Start button and type system restore.
Select Create a restore point, and then in the System Properties pane, select System Restore.
Follow the prompts to select the restore point just before the round of updates that seemed to trigger the problem. Then run the system restore process. (This takes a while.)
After your system is restored to the earlier configuration, check to see whether Windows Media Player runs correctly again.

Ошибки проигрывателя Windows Media
Поддержка Windows 7 закончилась 14 января 2020 г.
Чтобы продолжить получать обновления системы безопасности от Майкрософт, мы рекомендуем перейти на Windows 10.

Recovery options are there so you don’t have to turn to a clean reinstallation any time the system shows critical signs. That’s one of the best things about Windows 10.
However, what happens when even the recovery option is giving you a hard time?
Some users who, for particular reasons, tried resetting Windows 10, have had difficulties. The re-appearing error is Insert your Windows installation or recovery media.
If you’re in this group and the error is reoccurring after multiple tries to reset Windows 10, make sure to try out the solutions we provided below.
After that, you should, hopefully, resolve the issue at hand.
How can I fix Insert your Windows installation or recovery media error?
1: Run SFC and DISM
First things first. When even the recovery options won’t work as intended, we can say with certainty that the grave problem is at hand.
Resetting PC to factory settings shouldn’t require any external installation media or something similar.
It’s a built-in part of the system which utilizes system resources to refresh everything.
However, due to system corruption, it’s not unusual for errors like this to occur.
Either viruses or something else deleted some of the essentials files, the recovery option will lack resources needed to restore your PC to factory values.
Because of that, we recommend running System File Checker and DISM, respectively. These two utilities are built into the system and run through the elevated command line.
Here’s how to run SFC:
- In the Windows Search bar, type cmd.
- Right-click on Command Prompt and run it as an administrator.
- In the command-line, type sfc/scannow and press Enter.
And this is how to run Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- In the command line, type the following commands and press Enter after each:
- DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- The procedure should take some time.
2: Run Reset this PC from a recovery menu
This might be a long shot, but there’s a chance that Reset this PC run through the Windows 10 interface won’t work.
Run a System Scan to discover potential errors
Instead, you can access the Advanced Recovery menu and try restoring your PC from there.
In addition, since it’s hard to simulate this error, we can only assume that certain users were, afterward, unable to boot in Windows 10.
For that reason, we recommend trying this solution. Here’s how to access the Advanced Recovery menu:
- Reboot your PC 3 times in sequence until the Advanced Recovery menu appears.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Click on Reset this PC.
- Choose to keep your files and continue with the procedure.
3: Use bootable media as a source
If you’re still unable to perform a reset with the aforementioned approach, there’s another alternative.
If the procedure is unable to take resources from the system itself, maybe it will from the external media.
Even though it’s time-consuming, creating a bootable drive with Media Creation Tool is rather simple.
After you’ve done that, follow these instructions to reset Windows 10:
- Insert the installation drive.
- Open File Explorer and then the media drive.
- Double-click on Setup.exe to run it.
- Follow the instructions and make sure to keep all your files and settings.
4: Install Windows 10 clean
Of course, if there’s a way to back up your data, you should do it before formatting the system partition. That’s why backing up your data on a regular basis is of utmost importance.
Otherwise, you’ll get yourself in a scenario where a large chunk of your data is threatened.
If you’re not sure how to reinstall Windows 10 from a scratch, follow the instructions we provided in this article.
Finally, if even there you get stopped but this or similar error, we recommend checking the HDD health. Also, make sure that the drive isn’t locked.
That should do it. In case you have any questions or suggestions concerning the Insert your windows installation or recovery media error, we encourage you to share them.

Error using Windows 10 installation media — Error code: 0xc0000185, Your PC needs to be repaired. A required device isn’t connected or can’t be accessed.
I created a bootable dvd using the Windows 10 media creation tool.
I’m trying to repair a failed system reset with the above DVD but when i try to boot from the DVD i get the following error
Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
Z required device isn’t connected or can’t be accessed
Error Code: 0xc0000185
you’ll need to use recovery tools. if you don’t have any installation media (. ), contact your pc administrator
I created the iso ‘for this pc’ — could that be the issue (as the laptop has multiple drives) — I expected the dvd to allow me to create a fresh install
My ‘PC Reset’ is stuck at the language selection screen, i select a language, then hit next — this states an update is required as something went wrong, i enter my wifi details — then the pc show ‘Just a moment’ — it then either restarts back to language selection or the ‘Just a moment’ screen never moves on (left for over 12hrs)
Any help would be great

Try to enter Safe Mode to repair Windows.
Interrupt the normal boot process of your Windows 10 PC
If Windows 10 fails to boot normally three times over, the fourth time it enters by default in an Automatic Repair mode. Using this mode, you can boot into Safe Mode. To trigger the Automatic Repair mode, you must interrupt the normal boot process three consecutive times: use the reset or the power button on your Windows 10 PC to stop it during boot, before it finishes loading Windows 10. If you use the power button, you might have to keep it pressed for at least 4 seconds to force the power off
Then you proceed to repair the computer:
With a reset, all of your Installed applications are lost, but you get an option to save your files if you want. If a system image from the OEM exists-called a recovery partition, then it also gives you an option to restore it. It would make your PC load to default factory settings.
Navigate to Troubleshooting section, again.
Select Reset.
If you select keep my files, your files would be kept. You might also get the third option-restore to factory settings-which isn’t applicable on the PC.
After selecting the desired options, you are presented with a confirmation, something like this- This indicates what you have chosen.
Click on Reset and the resetting should begin.
Let us know if these steps help you to resolve the issue.

This error is due to the following:
- Update is superseded by a newer version that is already on your system.
- Update is already installed.
- Wrong update for Windows version and/or CPU architecture.
- Missing prerequisite update.
- Make sure that the standalone installer matches your current Windows 10 version (1703, 1709, or 1803). Check this by running winver command in Cortana search.
- Verify that the package that you are installing matches the processor architecture of the Windows version that you are using (x86 or x64). Check your processor architecture by running msinfo command in Cortana search, then look for the System Type section.
- Download the Media Feature Pack for N versions of Windows 10 from this link.
