Question
Periodically as of today (after having RTM installed for almost 2 weeks) I am getting a message stating «Windows must be reinstalled. An unauthorized changed was made to Windows. Windows must be reinstalled to activate.»
I have found several posts online for this message, but it was for Vista and correct me If I’m wrong, but slsvc is a Vista service and not 7 correct?
Regardless, any advice to get through this? At this point, I’m worried that If I restart, I won’t be able to get back on my machine.

Well . I ran cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc successfully, restarted, logged in to find that I got the message about «3 days remaining to activate». So I logged into msdn account and requested a new key, put that key in, and successfully registered.
Guess I’m good to go.

Unfortunately, came into the error yet again this morning. Still haven’t had any luck finding resolution.
I am running the Enterprise version if it matters .
I really hate to keep bumping my own thread, but I’m hoping to catch someone’s attention on this as I REALLY don’t want to go back to XP and I’m unsure what to do to resolve this. My IT guys do not have any answers as of yet and I fear that as soon as I reboot, I won’t be able to get back to my desktop.

Three things spring to mind:
1. An application has been installed that has caused this to happen — if you can remember when this started, you could try a system restore back to a period before this started.
2. Your machine has been infected with spyware/malware.
3. You could try a Windows 7 repair and see if that sorts it out. -Ken | http://ken.wagnerfamily.co.uk
The only thing I think that happened around the time of issue was I did a /rearm on slmgr.vbs because our IT guys are still trying to resolve issues with our Win 7 ENT activations. Other than that, my PC is completely clean and i’ve already done the whole spyware check. Googling this error is rather common in Vista and there is a fix out there that many have used that appear to work, but doesn’t for windows 7 enterprise. More specifically, this: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/d8c7d689-ccb7-4dc2-ab97-40988db8524d
I get an «invalid service name» when attempting to stop/start slsvc. Was this a service only in Vista? I found a post in this forum about a user running Win7 that stated he/she restarted that service? So perhaps this is not a service in enterprise? I’m somewhat at a loss.

The attempt to use the Rearm function is likely what caused the problem. Please read the following information from the Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation FAQ.
Q: Do I need a product key?
A: No, Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Trial has a product key built in, so there is no need to enter one.
Q: Do I have to activate Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Trial?
A: Yes, activation of Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Trial is required within 10 days after installation or the product will shut down every hour.
Hope this information helps.

Question
Hi
.
I am working on a friends computer which is running Windows Vista Home Basic and when I go to login
I recieve a message that says «windows must be reinstalled to activate» and to insert the Vista Cd/DVD.
Having done this but nothing happens and I cannot reinstall Vista. I have read in a previous thread that waiting approx 15 minutes and a popup browser may appear, but this has not happened even after an hour or more.
I have also used the other option in another thread that appears below with No success.
If the Internet Browser window never appears, perform the following steps:
1. At your initial login prompt, select the «ease of access» icon in lower left corner of the screen before you login.
2. Select the «magnifier» option.
3. Then login to your account
4. There will be a «Magnifirer configuration window». Select this window and restore this window if it has been minized. Select the help menu, and then select the «browse help» option.
5 Select the last option «Ask someone or expand your search»
6. Select the last option «Windows Online Help and Support» as this will open your default html browser.
Now one has «forced» an HTML browser to appear and NOW the remainder of your steps can be followed!
I cannot get passed the error box with «windows must be reinstalled to activate»
My initial problem when logging in was an error 0xc004e002 «Software licensing Service reported License store
contains inconsistant data», I no longer get this message but just the one re «windows must be reinstalled to activate»
I can get into «safe mode»
Can anyone please assist?
