Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader

PDF Dark mode – how to read at night without getting severe eye strain

Update 27.08.2020 — Windows 10 Edge and Firefox are no longer supported

Because of the recent changes in Firefox, PDF conversion is no longer technically possible. Although we reached out to Mozilla, there will be likely any action. Thus, until the new changes are still active, Night Eye is unable to convert PDFs. You can still use Chrome and Chromium based browsers to enable smooth dark mode on online PDFs.

The recent changes by Microsoft limit our ability to convert PDFs and enable dark mode for them. Sadly there is no workaround and might never be, unless Microsoft lift the limitations. Night Eye enables Dark mode for PDFs on all other browsers and you can still enjoy reading them without hurting your eyes. Check out the list of browsers that Night Eye is available for here.

Reading PDFs at night can be a real pain. You’re most likely familiar with the situation — it is late at night, you have to go through a pdf file that is 20-30 pages long and the bright background is simply not helping. Your eyes are already tired from spending you whole day in front of the monitor and now this.

If you are familiar with those circumstances, you probably have already searched for «reading pdf at night» or «pdf dark mode». The results are pretty outdated — 2010 (Lifehacker) and 2016 (MakeUseOf) also not really useful as they require you to adjust some settings in Adobe Reader.

The good news is that there is a solution that requires minimum efforts from you and will offer good enough solution, that will help you fight eye strain when reading pdfs late at night.

How can I enable dark mode when viewing a pdf file in firefox

I have enabled the dark mode in Firefox version 76.0 as well as installed the dark reader extension. The extension allows web pages to go dark. These changes do not affect any PDFs that have been opened in Firefox.

Is there any pdf viewer with dark mode?

Basically, I want a viewer which has a night mode or a dark mode so that I can change a pdf with a white background and black text to a dark background and light coloured text.

This method is only for text only documents. Otherwise the image colors will be inverted.

You can install Evince document viewer from this link and open it.Then goto the options on the top right corner as seen in the picture.

Then select Inverted colors. This will help you to read white text on a black background. In Evince document viewer 3.30.1+ select Night Mode.

Simply inverting colors doesn’t provide the best readability (being limited to very bright white text on very dark black background), although it can improve it a lot in a dark environment.

Evince, Okular and also pdfstudioviewer can do that, which will result in something like this (in both image and text pdfs):

PDF readers that can change both page and text color in both text and image (scanned text) pdf files are:

I think this is more readable:

Adobe Reader 9, which can still be used in Linux, can change both text and background color but only in text-based pdf files. More here.

See my linked answer on Foxit Reader, which can match Adobe Reader but has no dark GUI and no full-screen.

Calibre Ebook Reader (like many ebook readers) can edit colors of font and page, but it can also open text-based pdfs.

Which PDF Readers Have Dark Mode?

A PDF (Portable Document Format) file is used for distributing read-only documents that keep the layout of the page. Normally PDF’s are used for manuals. eBooks, and different kinds of forms. Available cross-platform, PDF’s look the same on a Windows computer as it does on Mac.

There are several programs that read PDF files and most of them contain black text on a white background. But some of them also have the option to read the PDF files in Dark Mode. So, how to you enable Dark Mode in a PDF Reader?

Adobe Acrobat Reader

This is what you think about when you talk about PDF. Adobe created PDF’s decades ago and did so for two main reasons. Firstly, to help people open a document on any kind of hardware and operating system. Secondly, that the file would remain unchanged wherever it’s opened. So, how do you access Dark Mode in Adobe reader?

Windows

If you want to read a PDF file on Windows, you won’t be able to find a designated switch for Dark Mode. But this doesn’t mean that Dark Mode is unavailable. What you have to do is search around a bit to find a way to enable it. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Edit menu.
  2. Select Preferences, then Accessibility.
  3. Click on the button next to “Use High Contrast Colors”.
  4. You have four options to choose from, one of which is “white text on black”.
  5. Apply the changes. Now every new PDF document will be opened in selected color combinations. And it will even display images without any color inversions.

iOS & Android

For anyone trying to read an eBook or a manual using their iPhone or iPad, good news – there’s a dedicated night mode option available. Just select the page-shaped icon and then turn on the switch you see next to Night Mode – which will instantly be applied.

Overall, it works great, but the downside is that it displays images in an inverted grayscale. And that’s not always what you’re looking for. On the other hand, maybe that’s compatible with the functionality of the Dark Mode. It reduces the color contrast.

Android also has allowed Dark Mode, which can be enabled by tapping the View icon at the top of the screen. Adobe PDF reader applies the night mode not only for the PDFs but for the entire theme too. in addition, it also displays images in grayscale.

Foxit PDF Reader

Foxit is another piece of software that allows you to read PDF files. It mainly competes with Adobe in terms of editing, but it also offers a free PDF reader app. It’s straightforward, easy to use, and also supports Dark Mode. Here’s how you enable it:

Windows

When you open a PDF in Windows, select “View” and then opt for “Night Mode”. The change will be instantaneous. If, however, the black background doesn’t seem to go well with certain images, you can use the Color Mode option. It’s within the same menu and allows you to switch between four shades of background color.

iOS & Android

For iOS supported devices, going to Dark Mode is very simple. All you need to do is tap the “View” icon and switch to Night Mode. There are plenty of predefined background colors to choose from. You can also customize the text and background color. There’s an Auto-Brightness feature with a slider that you can use for adjustments.

The Dark/Night Mode works pretty much the same in the Foxit Android app. Go to the “View” icon and there’s the Night Mode, ready to be switched on.

Is Dark Mode Better for Your Eyes?

Why is Dark Mode so important, anyway? Twitter was the first to introduce it. And then many other apps followed. There’s a reason why Dark Mode is more commonly known as Night Mode. It’s meant to be used at night, or in dark settings. During the day, the standard black text to the white background makes more sense.

But in the dark, especially if you’re lying in your bed scrolling for hours through social media, your eyes will love the Dark Mode more. In the main, because things have changed so much recently. For example, smartphone screens have gotten bigger and brighter.

You know how it feels when someone takes out their phone in a dark movie theater and the brightness is blinding? It’s not comfortable. And whilst the science isn’t conclusive about the actual health benefits of Dark Mode for your eyes, many people find it far less strenuous. And it’s supposed to be better for your battery as well. And battery life is still one of those things smart devices lack.

PDF Dark Mode Is Practical and Good for You

Many people try Dark Mode and then never change it. It doesn’t matter if it’s day or night. They find if more soothing and comfortable to use. Others find it unnecessary. In either case, it’s good that the Dark Mode is more available in everyday apps now. Like PDF readers. If you wait for the night to read up on files, or you like to read in the dark, night mode is immensely beneficial. And it’s easy to enable.
