I am trying to replace my OEM «generic» Product Key with the «individual» Product Key listed on the «Microsoft-Genuine» tag on the rear of my case.
I am prepping this machine for use by my mother — a computer neophyte — living too far away for me to provide hands-on support. In the event of mus-hap, I I I would like the Product Key installed to match the product key listed on the «Microsoft Genuine» tag attached to the case.
System is an already activated Windows XP Media Center with SP3 installed — with an OEM (?) installed product key :
Windows Product Key: *****-*****-GDTF9-B9QW7-BBVH6
QUESTION: Since I don’t know if the present license is a «Volume License» or an «OEM License» it’s not clear which instructions to follow.
I tried the Windows Product Key Update Tool. on the on the system, which checks out as «Genuine» (Validation Status: Genuine) which failed ( as described below). Is it possible to replace the present Product Key with the «real» one?
Following the instructions on http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/genuine/product-key for Windows XP,
1. Open the Windows Product Key Update Tool. (file: KeyUpdateTool_enu.exe)
