I have a new Dell Inspiron 546 with Windows 7 Home Premium factory installed. Every night, I put the computer in sleep mode. In the morning, I have the follow error:

I noticed the problem also occured yesterday after the computer completed a data backup to my USB attached external hard drive.
Well. sorta. I tired everything I could to resolve the issue, and I’m convinced that it was a corrupted file somewhere. But I’m not a tech and don’t have the time to be one. So after SCREAMING (literally) at Dell Tech Support a number of times, they finally sent a guy out who replaced my motherboard and memory. He left a hard drive with me and told me how to trade it out if the problem persisted. Well, guess what. it did. So I traded out the hard drive and it has worked fine ever since. Again, I think the problem was a corrupted execute file. that’s clearly what the minidump told me. But Dell Tech Support is absolutely, positively worthless and thier solution to any problem is swapping out hardware rather than addressing the real problem. That’s kinda like trading out your eingine because your spark plugs are bad! Plus, their techs are NOT techs, and give you scripted answers to everything. I bet a spent 30 or more hours on the phone either on hold or trying to communicate with someone who barely spoke English before I finally got results. And even then, the onsite tech who came to my house did no diagnostics. he just traded out hardware until the problem was solved. NOW I see why a Mac costs 3 times as much as a PC- thier customer service is impeccable and they support both the hardware and software in their product. Even though my 546 is now working properly, I will NEVER buy another Dell.. and I’ve been a loyal Dell customer for almost a decade. So. if your Mom has the patience, I’d say spend the painful time with Dell Tech Support to get the problem solved. If not, she should probably just go spend a few bucks with a local computer repair company who can repair the corrupted file in short order. Hope that’s helpful advice!

From all the posts I’ve read it sunds like this is a software or hardware issue with Vista (maybe driver). There are resolutons e.g. 1)going thru your hardware manager & checking all the settings to see if one is unchecked for PC during sleep mode, or 2)updates KB973879 & KB972036 that caused the problems & when uninstalled fixed them & most promissing 3)is the Article ID: 958233 «How to fix BlueScreen (STOP) errors that cause Windows Vista to shut down or restart unexpectedly».
As I said this PC is brand new — first powered on 9/2/09 (however software came installed from DELL-could there have been a problem before I powered it up?). All I did was plug in a normal usb keyboard/mouse then a Blueray Logitech Keyboard/mouse, an HP printer (which I have since removed/restarted several times since), Bose speaker system & of course the monitor.
So my question is I guess, before I start doing system restores & other things mentioned in the above article for a problem no one seems to have a real handle on is there any new info out there to share. What about the problem reports that are sent to Microsoft? Can I expect any resolution from those? Have automatic updates on, are there any I should remove? I have a free upgrade to WINDOWS 7, when does that come out? Might that fix the problem?
Is there any way to drill down to determine which driver might be causing the problem if it is a driver issue?

Run the SFC /scannow per the link I posted and check the log file as indicated there.
ntoskrnl.exe is a Vista system file and it crashing due to the cause of this issue which is likely either
hardware — Video card not seated properly or a power supply issue and/or driver issues.
Remove ALL power to system — open case and remove and reseat all cards. Remove and reseat
all cables (do not just attempt to snug) on both ends for those can have removeable ends (this
helps remove minor corrosion).
Here is my generic driver updater and see the other methods on the page I referred you to above.
For Drivers check System Maker as fallbacks and Device Maker’s which are the most current.
Control Panel — Device Manager — Display Adapter — write down the make and complete model of your
video adapter — double click — Driver’s tab — write down the version info. Now click UPdate Driver (this
may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers) — then Right Click — Uninstall — REBOOT
this will refresh the driver stack.
Repeat that for Network — Network Card (NIC), Wifi, Sound, Mouse and Keyboard if 3rd party with their
own software and drivers and any other major device drivers you have.
Now go to System Maker’s site (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) (as rollback) and then Device Maker’s site
(Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI as examples) and get their latest versions. (Look for BIOS, Chipset and software
updates at System Maker’s site while there.)
Download — SAVE — go to where you put them — Right Click — RUN AD ADMIN — REBOOT after each installation.
Always check in Device Manager — Drivers tab to be sure the version you are installing actually shows up. This
is because some drivers rollback before the latest is installed (sound drivers particularly do this) so install a
driver — reboot — check to be sure it is installed and repeat as needed.
Repeat at Device Makers — BTW at Device Makers DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER — check manually by model.
Manually look at manufacturer’s sites for drivers — and Device Maker’s sites.

If you update drivers manually then it is a good idea to disable Driver Installations in Windows Updates,
this leaves Windows Updates ON however it will not install drivers which will usually be older and cause
issues. If Updates suggests a new driver then HIDE it (Right Click on it) and then go look for new ones
manually if you wish.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

1) I have the private message, but don’t see anywhere to upload or submit the Minidumps.
2) Make & Model: HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC laptop
3) I receive the error on restarting the PC. It occurs when I return to the computer after I’ve closed it for hibernate/sleep, and open it. The computer is off, and upon rebooting, past a Safe Mode option, I log back in, and then the error message appears.
4) The only significant change to my computer prior to receiving all of these error messages was the installation and frequent play of a new game, League of Legends. That said, I had it installed for around two or three weeks before I got the first error.
The upsetting thing is that this appears to be an intermittent problem, not a frequent one. It’s become more frequent, but I can still close the lid, put the computer to sleep, and reawaken it fine most of the time.
I’m nervous that this is symptomatic of a more significant issue, though, and I hate it because it does indicate that something isn’t quite right.
Yesterday, from the optional updates in Windows Update, i did install an updated USB Mouse Driver a(and the Muse and Keyboard center from MS) — I have read that others with similar error codes could’ve been faced with Driver-based issues, so when I saw that driver as a possibility I updated it. There’s also a driver for my wireless adapter waiting, but I’m a little nervous to update that — all too often I’ve updated things and they don’t work quite right after (like my mouse wheel, which now acts-up in game :/)

Please post a copy of your dump file as a shared file to your Sky Drive with a link here.
The dump file will be created at c:\windows\minidump. You may need to change your settings in Windows to be able to see the file. To show hidden files type Folder Options in the search box above the Start button and select View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before «Show hidden files and folders» is checked and «Hide protected operating system files» is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before «Hide extensions for known file types» is not checked.
Please download and run Driver View and upload a copy of the report it produces to your Sky Drive. To get a report on all drivers select Edit, Select All followed by File, Save Selected Items.
