Пустые папки или файлы не занимают много места на компьютере, но могут создавать путаницу среди файлов и папок. Функционал Remove Empty Directories на русском языке, позволит удалить папки выборочно. При выборочном удалении папок и нулевых файлов вы сможете задать исключения и параметры поиска. Возможно, вам требуется оставить некоторые папки или пустые файлы, именно для этого была добавлена данная возможность.
Открыв окно программы, вы можете видеть древовидную структуру ваших жёстких дисков. Красным цветом, будут подсвечиваться те самые пустые папки в файловой системе. Исключения задаются на вкладке «Настройки».

One might think that searching and deleting empty directories is a trivial thing, but once you have hundreds of them it get’s really exhausting. That’s the reason I made RED. It’s a small and simple tool that searches and deletes empty directories recursively below a given start folder. And before deleting anything it let’s you check all empty directories it found.

How to Remove Empty Directories with PowerShell, or Robocopy
Removing empty directories in Windows 10 is really simple with a small PowerShell script or RoboCopy cmd. There is really no need to install any program to clean up the empty directories on your computer or server.
With the use of PowerShell or RoboCopy, both included in Windows 10, we can delete all empty folders and subfolders. It’s always a good idea to list the empty directories first, so I added the option in both scripts.
Below an example for both scripts. I have also tested the PowerShell and RoboCopy script against a directory with 11.000 empty subdirectories to see which option is the fastest.
Remove Empty Directories with PowerShell
Below you will find the script to remove empty directories with PowerShell. If you want to test the script first, which I really recommend doing, then you can set the variable $whatif to $true.
Windows makes a hidden file, Thumbs.db, in folders with images in it. These folders appear to be empty, even with show hidden files in Explorer, you don’t see the Thumbs.db. So to remove those empty folders as well you can set removeHiddenFiles to $true.
The script will then ignore the hidden files and remove the folder including the hidden files with it.
In the script, we first set the WhatIf mode. This way we can test the script without actually removing any folders.
Next, we have the function Delete-EmptyFolder . The function will go through each subfolder of the given path and calls the function recursively to process the subfolders as well.
If there aren’t any subfolders, then it will request all child items in the current folder. If there aren’t any child items, then the script will remove the empty directories.
How fast is PowerShell with removing empty directories?
I tested both scripts against a directory with 11.000 empty subdirectories, going 3 levels deep. PowerShell needed 12 secs to remove all empty directories. That is when you disable the Write-Host output on line 27. With the output, it took 24 secs in total.
Running the script
The easiest way to run this script is to open the Windows PowerShell ISE. This way you can easily change the path and WhatIf variable. Windows PowerShell ISE is also a standard program of Windows 10 which you will find in your Start Menu.
Click on Start
Type PowerShell
Select Windows PowerShell ISE
Copy the script above
Paste the code in the script section (you may need to expand it first, see red arrow)
Change the path and make sure WhatIf is set to true first
Click the green button to run the script.
Delete empty folders with RoboCopy
Another option to delete empty folders is to use RoboCopy. This command-line utility is built into Windows since Windows 7 and can be used in PowerShell or CMD.
The trick with RoboCopy is actually to move the directory to the same folder. The /S option copies all subdirectories but excludes the empty folders. Just make sure that you use the exact same path twice in RoboCopy.
If you first want to list all the empty directories with RoboCopy you can use the /L switch.
Downside of using RoboCopy
There is one downside to using the RoboCopy method, it won’t remove empty directories with a Thumbs.db in it. This is a little file that is created by Windows in folders with images in it. You can safely remove this file if the directory is further empty.
With PowerShell we can ignore the file and remove it together with the empty directory. We can’t do such thing with RoboCopy.
How fast is RoboCopy with deleting empty folders?
Robocopy was remarkable faster than PowerShell. Removing the 11.000 directories only took 4 secs on average.
Wrapping up
Always test script first, use the WhatIf mode, or run it on a couple of test folders so you are sure that it’s working as aspected.
The RoboCopy method is a lot faster then PowerShell, but keep in mind that it won’t remove directories with a Thumbs.db in it.

Этим постом начинаю новую рубрику на ЯндексДзене — «Эта «софтинка» стоит выделки» . Помните известную фразу про «овчинку»? Я решил немного переделать это выражение на свой лад.
Новая рубрика будет посвящена полезным программам, которые облегчают, ускоряют и делают работу на компьютере проще, а иногда интереснее.
Удалить папку? Дело не хитрое!
Во-первых, разберемся с папками (каталогами). Сразу, же оговоримся к папкам расположенным на диске «С» нужно относиться аккуратно. Не стоит удалять даже пустую папку в корневом каталоге «С», а также каталоги расположенные в системных папках (например: «Program Files» ). Вообще с папками системы нужно быть аккуратным, если не знаете что это за папка, лучше ее не трогать.
Другое дело например папки в разделе «Загрузка» (куда обычно скачиваются все файлы из интернета), или папки которые Вы создали сами.
Итак, рассмотрим типичную ситуацию. Когда-то вы создали на «Рабочем столе» или на другом диске (скажем на диске «D») папку с названием «Библиотека». Время от времени Вы «складываете» туда файлы, до тех пор пока папка не становиться слишком большой по размеру. Сразу о чем, можно подумать — это почистить дубликаты файлов. И вот воспользовавшись программой для удаления дубликатов, ваша папка стала меньше по размеру. Но возникла другая проблема — множество пустых папок. Заходить в каждую папку и проверять наличие файла, а затем если файл там не обнаружиться вручную удалять каждую пустую папку — это слишком трудоемкая работа. К счастью есть небольшая бесплатная утилита RED («remove empty directories»), которую даже устанавливать не надо.
Удаляем много пустых папок
Заходим на сайт . Спускаемся ниже и находим «портабельную» версию программы.
Можете использовать любую ссылку для скачивания программы. Через несколько секунд загрузиться архив zip с программой. Распакуйте его в удобное место. В распакованном архиве будет несколько файлов, в том числе RED2.exe, запустите его. Откроется следующее окно.
С помощью «Browse. » выберете нужный каталог. Например, в моем случае я использую следующий адрес: «C:\Users\usera\Desktop\Библиотека». У Вас естественно будет свой. Затем внизу нажмите «Scan folders», запуститься процесс поиска.
После сканирования появится «дерево каталогов», к этому времени программа уже знает какие из каталогов пусты. Причем если в каталоге есть еще несколько пустых каталогов, а также пустых подподкаталогов, то программа «найдет» и их.
После этого достаточно нажать «Delete folders», и начнется процесс удаления пустых каталогов.
Как удалить пустые папки — Remove Empty Directories
Доброго времени суток, дорогие друзья, знакомые и иные личности. Сегодня мы узнаем как удалить пустые папки из компьютера на основе Windows .
Дело в том, что в ходе использования компьютера создается множество всяких пустых папок (создаются они как самой системой, так и пользователем). Собственно, как Вы поняли, в этой статье речь пойдет как раз о программе, которая ищет и удаляет пустые папки на диске.
Я, честно говоря, был довольно сильно удивлен, когда увидел, что она нашла порядка 6000 пустых папок на одном только диске с системой 🙂
Как правило, эти папки создаются самой ОС в ходе всяких установок, кэширования и пр., и создаются, понятное дело, они изначально полными, а затем файлы из них (скажем, после установки чего-либо) удаляются, а вот сами папки остаются висеть мертвым грузом.
Не сказать, что это плохо, т.к. вес этих папок равен 0 байт, но таки, чисто теоретически, для файловой системы будет лучше, если оных папок в таблице файлов будет поменьше. Да и Вам, если что, не придется ковыряться по папкам где ничего нет 🙂
Чем и как удалить пустые папки из Windows
Для наших целей отлично подойдет программка Remove Empty Directories . Надо сказать, что она довольна капризная в плане работы, то тут брыкнется, то там, но подружиться с ней в общем-то можно 🙂
Человеческого работающего аналога, во всяком случае, мне, найти не удалось. Ранее, помнится, я использовал для подобных нужд SBMAV Disk Cleaner , но он перешел на платные рельсы, а прочие чистилки жесткого диска работают в плане поиска и удаления пустых директорий не так эффективно.
Взять программку можно, например, отсюда . Установка предельно проста, и на ней я останавливаться не буду. Поддержки русского языка нет, но она там и не нужна, — всё и так интуитивно понятно.
ВАЖНО ! Для работы программы требуется установленный .NET Framework.
После установки, запускаем программу, кнопочкой » Browse..» выбираем диск для сканирования и нажимаем в Scan Folders.
Дождавшись окончания сканирования радостно давим в Delete Folders и наслаждаемся полученным результатом. Вроде всё 🙂
Осталось поступить аналогичным образом со всеми дисками в системе.
Послесловие
Уж не знаю насколько это реально полезней, но не вредит — факт. Обычно никогда. При необходимости, Windows сама пересоздаст необходимые папки, если они ей нужны.
Так или иначе, лично для меня это было удобно в первую очередь тем, что я перестал натыкаться на пустые папки, путешествуя по внутренностям системы. А то бывало, идешь мышкой по огромному пути в проводнике, — тырк тырк тырк, — а там пусто! 🙂 Обидно, право слово.
