Question

Hello. I’ve recently been having performance issues with my Windows 7 64-bit PC. These issues range from random Google Chrome crashes and hangs, to BSOD’s, to random program errors. I normally update drivers manually from manufacturer’s websites in addition to Windows Updates. In an effort to diagnose and troubleshoot, I ran «SFC.exe /scannow» from an elevated command prompt. Upon completion it returned the results:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Immediately I opened this text file to find several «member files» SFC «cannot repair». I will list them here in the order they are listed in the log file.

Some of these look to be duplicate entries. Not sure why, but I’ve also saved a zip file of the Event Viewer log. I’m really hoping someone can help me out with this.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them

We have already seen how the System File Checker allows users to scan for and restore corrupt Windows system files. We have also seen how to run System File Checker and more, earlier. But what if at the end of the run you see the following message?

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

What this message says is that although the System File Checker completed the scan and found corrupted system files, it was unable to proceed and replace them with good system files.

The Windows Resource Protection protects registry keys and folders as well as critical system files. If any changes are detected to a protected system file, the modified file is restored from a cached copy located in the Windows folder itself.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them

If you receive this message and the System File Checker is not able to do its job when you run it, here are a few things you can try.

1] Run SFC in Safe Mode

Boot into Safe Mode. Open an elevated command prompt windows, type sfc/scannow and hit Enter.

J ust make sure that the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders exist under %WinDir%\WinSxS\Temp. This may help if some start-up programs are creating a problem.

2] Run SFC at Boot Time

If you wish to or need to, you may run System File Checker at Boot Time. This is one option that may help you as it will run System File Checker before Windows loads.

Go here to learn how to run sfc /scannow at Boot Time. See if this helps.

3] Use DISM

Use DISM. Open an elevated command prompt and run the following command and hit Enter:

This command checks for component store corruption, records the corruption and FIXES the corruption. It may take a while though! Useful if System File Checker is not working.

4] Try Reset This PC or Fresh Start

On Windows 10, try Reset This PC or Fresh Start. On Windows 8, carry out a Refresh or a Reset operation. An Automatic Repair is also an option you may want to consider if you think it applies in your situation. On Windows 7, carry out a Startup Repair or Repair Install or an In-place Upgrade as you think may best suit your situation.

To perform an In-place upgrade in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, back up your documents, close all open applications and then insert the Windows DVD in the DVD drive. In the Setup window, click Install Now. Click Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended). Type the CD key if you are prompted to do this. Next, select the operating system in Install Windows page you want to Upgrade or In-place and click Yes to accept the Microsoft Software License Terms. Next click Upgrade when asked Which type of installation do you want. Once the process is completed, restart your PC.

5] Check the Log files

You may also want to consider this option. Open the CBS.log file and view details of the corrupted files and replace the corrupted file with a known good copy manually. Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS you will be able to see and open the SBS.log file.

Check if it shows some errors or a message. That may give you a direction to proceed. You can get more details on how to do this manually, here at KB929833.

«Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them» error message on running SFC scan on Windows 10 PCs.

Original Title: System File Checker reports recent corruption

I administer 3 different Windows 10 Pro 64-bit PCs and a Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit PC in different locations around the UK.

I run the following on these PCs every couple of weeks:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

I have just run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth and it reports:

No Component Store Corruption detected.

However, on all 3 Windows 10 Pro 64-bit PC, sfc /scannow is now reporting:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

and I cannot resolve this issue. On 1 PC, I performed an In-Place Upgrade and sfc /scannow is still reporting the same.

I would like to know why this is suddenly occuring on ALL my Windows 10 Pro 64-bit PCs, all at the same time and if there is anyway of fixing this.

The Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit PC does not exhibit any problem when running the System File Checker.

Anyone able to shed some light on what is going on with Windows 10 Pro here and know how I can proceed?

A false positive note is given by the system file check, but to confirm that you need to share CBS.log file on onedrive etc. publically and paste a link here in the next reply.

CBS.log is in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\

The above issue might occur due to the third party application installed or some of the unused/unwanted files present on the computer.

Along with Sumit Dhiman2’s suggestion, follow the methods below and check if either helps in resolving the issue.

Method 1 : Boot the computer in Clean boot and check if the issue is caused due to any of the third party applications installed in the PC.

Putting the system in Clean boot will enable the PC to start using minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista.

Refer to the section How to perform a clean boot for Windows 10 from the link below:

Disclaimer : Start the computer in normal mode refer the section, How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting from the link above.

Method 2 : If the issue persists, run check disk commands by following the steps below and check if the issue is resolved.

  1. Press Windows Key + X keys on the keyboard and select Command prompt (Admin) option.
  2. Type in the command prompt, CHKDSK /Z and press ENTER to scan the disk (Z is the drive which you want to perform check disk command on) .
  3. After the scan is complete, check for the status of the scan. Perform the same on all the drives installed in the PC.
  4. If the scan is success close the window and check if the changes are effective.

NOTE: The root drive has to be C: and the command may schedule a task at the system startup, if it does, then press Y to schedule a task and restart the computer to perform chkdsk.
Once chkdsk completes, boot to the desktop and then check.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.
