Save Window Position

My window position is never saved. When I click the «Open message in new window» button, the window is always opened as maximized. When I restore it, its not where it should be. How can I save the Mail window position?

I’m using Mail version 17.8241.41225.0.

Saving the window size/position when opening a message to a new window is easy. Simply follow the steps below on how to do so:

1. Open a message in a new window.
2. Press and hold the Ctrl button on your keyboard and click on the X button at upper right corner of the window to close it.
3. When you open a message in another window, the size/position of the window should be saved.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn’t seem to work.

The main window position is always saved, but the message window isn’t.

Does anyone else have this problem?

If that’s the case, we suggest that you create a new User Profile to check if the issue reoccurs. To create a user profile, follow these steps:

1. Go to Settings. Click Accounts.
2. Select Family & other people.
3. Select the Add someone else to this PC tab.
4. Name the user as Test.
5. Leave the password field blank.
6. Hit Next.
7. Sign in as Test user.

Since you mentioned that the initial suggested troubleshooting didn’t work, we’d like to clarify if you indeed pressed the Ctrl key and then clicked the Close button (X) for both the main window and the message window. This is for us to avoid any misunderstanding.

I apologize for not responding sooner.

Holding down ctrl and clicking close on the message window didn’t work.

I haven’t tried creating a new user profile. If I get extra frustrated, I might go through the steps of trying to create a new user profile and setting up Mail again.

Reproducing the issue by creating a new profile would be a good idea to isolate the issue.

If the issue does not happen on the new profile, there could be some broken system components on your current profile. Let’s resolve it by repairing the system following the instructions below:

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt. Right click on Start button > select Command Prompt ( Admin ).
2. Copy and paste the command, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. You will get a message » The restore operation completed successfully.»
3. Restart your PC to apply changes.

Please note that this process will take time. You will notice that it’s being stuck on 20%, but it’s normal since it’s checking and configuring necessary changes on the broken components.

Windows restore position sometimes doesn’t work

I wrote a simple C# program that saves the locations and sizes of open windows to a file, and then can also restore them from that file (based on command-line arguments). This always works for some programs and not for others, and I don’t know why.

The rest of the code is unremarkable: save some data to a text file, read some data from a text file. All of it is copy-pasted from online examples, and I am a novice C# / Windows programmer.

The program works quite well on certain programs and not at all on others. I can restore Chrome to its size and position, but not Firefox, and not Microsoft Edge. Visual Studio Code works, but not R Studio. This is a surprise to me, because (not knowing much about Windows programming) I expected that the GUI part of any Windows program was coded with standard Windows libraries, and so any program that works on Windows would respond to SetWindowPos the same way.

Why does this work for some programs and not for others?

I need to do this because I have a 4K monitor, and somehow Windows loses the size and position of most windows every time the monitor is turned off or times out. Is there a Windows utility that keeps a record of the size and position of all active windows for later retrieval? For example, if I have my text editor and web browser open side-by-side, and then open Outlook full screen, I’d like a keyboard shortcut to quickly switch back to the editor/browser configuration. I’m thinking of something like Emacs’s Winner Mode.

Does such a thing exist?

Try WiLMA (Windows Layout Manager).
It was originally created by Stefan Didak to set up and recall different window layout scenarios (development, VM management, VNC, etc). He uses and maintains it to manage dozens of windows on 8+ monitors in his massive home office setup.

Use the free and simple AutoSizer

AutoSizer automatically resizes programs for you, keeping them at a specific size or keeping them maximized. One popular use is to keep Internet Explorer maximized when you go on the web. A commercial shareware that I believe does what you ask is ZMover ($19.95).

Simply tell ZMover which windows you want to modify and how, then hide the program and let it work in the background. ZMover will monitor the desktop and automatically reposition, resize, or even keep selected windows below or above the others when they open. ZMover can accommodate a large number of window layouts that you can name and sort to your convenience. Moreover, the program displays information that enables you to track its progress in real-time and review its past activity.

ZMover supports multiple display setups and helps you manage application windows across several monitors with ease. The number of applications lacking multiple monitor support and the increased desktop space offered by such display configurations make it more difficult to maintain an optimal desktop layout. ZMover eliminates these difficulties with its ability to store many window layouts and to move windows beyond the primary monitor.

ZMover is mainly designed to deal with main windows. Tool windows are trickier because they are often similar on the surface with their program only being able to differentiate them

Summary of the new feature/enhancement

As a developer with 5 monitors, whenever I have to go to a meeting which requires my laptop, I usually have to spend a couple minutes minimizing windows once un-docked, then 3-5 minutes re-positioning/resizing a bazillion windows back onto my multiple monitors.

It would be awesome to have a PowerToy that at least attempted to keep my layout between dock cycles, maybe integrated into the virtual desktops feature in Windows 10

Proposed technical implementation details (optional)

Whenever a graphics/monitor hardware event occurs, and before Windows re-positions all windows, take a snapshot of the monitor layout, all main window handles and their current positions.

Then, check if the new layout/monitor configuration matches to any previous snapshots, and align the windows accordingly.

The initial version could just go off window handles, but maybe future versions could allow users to specify regular expressions for window titles/tab names (in the event windows are closed then re-opened.)

An alternative (And nice-to-have) addition to this feature would be to have a key command that would allow you to manually save/reload window layouts. Again, similar to the request above, it would be a case of saving the window titles/names or window handles, and then restoring them into position at a single keystroke. This would need to be multi-desktop, multi-window aware.

If for some reason automatic detection of «graphics/monitor hardware events» + save/restore is technically not possible, I could also live with a manual approach using some hotkeys as mentioned earlier (as an addition there).

I would love for something to be built in to FancyZones (or PowerToys) that could save & restore window layouts based on what monitors are connected.

Yes, I could see this for Fancy Zones to adapt to different monitor profiles, but also as a separate Power Toys feature that can help manage those profiles when moving between workstations.

It’s generally frustrating working on windows with a laptop + docking station + multiple screens.
Everytime you undock the laptop for a meeting the windows go to screen one (which is okay I guess, although it would be cool to have an option to use different desktops instead) but whenever you redock it all the windows are on screen 1 and you have to take time to restore their position. Depending on how many windows you have open during the work day that can take quite some time.

I recently found https://github.com/manutalcual/winredock which restores the position. Think it would be great if this kind of functionality was integrated into PowerToys.

Sometimes my kvm does silly things in the monitor, i need to turn it on/off but then all my windows are back on the main and i have to re-arrange everything. This would certainly be a welcome solution. Also found those others tools but it should really be in powertoy 😉

I am using it for my daily docking and redocking cycle of my laptop
One layout at home with 3xFullHD Monitors and another layout at office (two 4k 43 Monitors).
