Why save the desktop icons
Especially for users who often have to change the screen resolution, such as webmasters or gamers. Or also for potential users who often have to work with a projector on a notebook. (Here too, the resolution on the notebook is happy to change).
After this change, an icon chaos can be found on the desktop as if a bomb had struck. Likewise, when working with docking devices, desktop bars and windows, the icon position shifts and is not correctly restored if this was not anticipated by the respective program!
The advantage of DesktopOK is the size of the program, less than 300 K, also that no installation is required and the 32 bit version has no disadvantages compared to the 64 bit version, so it has an EXE for all MS Windows OS. Simply place it on the desktop and get started. The program also has many other tools!
Due to the integrated additional desktop tools, it is almost indispensable on every Windows PC, so the name is also desktop OK and not just Icon Save. I would like to expand it with other useful functions, so it lives up to the name, you can find these in the Tools menu, most of them are self-explanatory!
DesktopOK is a random product from FavoritenFreund, but has long been one of the most popular programs in Germany.
The Installation of DesktopOK
The Freeware DesktopOK does not have to be installed and can be executed easily from the desktop, and can be carried on a small usb-stick or other memory device. Start the program. The first time that you use it the program it will present you with a license screen. The program is free and the license info is only displayed the first time (per PC).
For portable use, please create or copy in DesktopOK working directory the DesktopOK.ini.

Thanks for your feedback. Hi UB. I’m Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you. Place the icons where you want them, to easily resize hold Ctrl key and roll the mouse wheel (or press + or- key) slowly forward or back. Once they are where you want them, right click an empty area to choose Refresh and this should remember their position. If not then in very rare cases there can be a program interfering. Turn off all startup freeloaders following Step 4 in this checklist: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki. . I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. I haven’t changed my resolution, but there are some games that I play with a resolution different than that of my desktop. I do however have this unchecked (the Override scaling mode. ): . but if I recall, I think I unchecked that after the first desktop rearrangement from a windows update, and I usually play my games in «exclusive» fullscreen mode, which doesn’t change my desktop, or windowed mode which doesn’t change it either, but it’s possible after unchecking that, I might’ve tested a game in borderless window «fullscreen», but I think something like that would reset my icon placement, not scatter them. No I only have Align Icons to Grid checked.. I’m not sure how dire it is to keep desktop.ini files, if those keep track of where the icons are, but I had 2 on my desktop and deleted them. If they do keep track, I wonder if it’s possible to edit/create a new desktop.ini file telling where to put each icon? Edit: I tested a few games now while that option remains unchecked. Borderless fullscreen won’t let you change the resolution since it just goes by whatever resolution the desktop is, and changing the Fullscreen resolution either higher or lower than my current/native resolution doesn’t affect my icon placement either, but I can’t say that for all games, just the ones I tested.. There shouldn’t be any startup programs that affect my desktop since I’ve restarted just now, and several times in the past with no change to my icon placement. I’ll check the other 2 links and get back to you. Was this reply helpful? Sorry this didn’t help. Great! Thanks for your feedback. How satisfied are you with this reply? I tried taking a look at the IconCache.db file using Notepad++ and isn’t readable under ANSI encoding. Tried converting to UTF-8 and is a lot more readable, but the characters are widely spaced out. I tried opening it again with Android Studio since I remember .db files are used in android as well, and is much more readable but still with several ? characters eveywhere. Do you know what encoding is used for windows 10 .db files? I’m curious to see what all is in there since what I was able to see in Android Studio looked like paths for the different icons, but can’t tell if they are current icons, in the past, or what. Edit: Sorry meant to say that I didn’t save any changes I did when converting encoding ;p Was this reply helpful? Sorry this didn’t help. Great! Thanks for your feedback. I would not personally allow any of those to start with Windows but I’m not a gamer so you would probably know better than me which of those is absolutely needed to be running at all times to make your games play best. If it’s a normal Windows app my answer is nothing. Also be aware that No expert in Forums — where we see the most cases, by the thousands — recommends Avast, AVG. Norton or McAfee, but we have solved many problems over the years by having them uninstalled. I would uninstall any 3rd party antivirus in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features and try running only built-in Defender which gives adequate protection, best Windows performance, least issues, and is from Microsoft who knows how to protect their OS best. After uninstalling antivirus in Settings > Apps > Apps & Features, restart the PC, then type Security in Start Search, open Windows Defender Settings, there and in Windows Defender Security Center fix anything that’s flagged. If you want the best on-demand scanner download and install Malwarebytes from https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ If you want to keep Malwarebytes as an on-demand scanner then you can disable its Real Time trial version in it’s Settings > Accounts tab. Next check for damaged System Files since the problem anti-viruses can damage WIndows: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-use-sfc-scannow. I hope this helps. Windows MVP 2010-20 Over 100,000 helped in forums in 10 years How can I save HICON to an .ico file?I am extracting an icon from .exe/.dll and want to save it in an .ico file. What is the best way to do this? I have tried to use ::OleCreatePictureIndirect() and then IPicture->SaveAsFile() . It works but transparent parts of the icon are painted black (and obviously are not transparent any more 🙁 ). I tried manual parsing. It works OK but is cumbersome and I am afraid of complications with Vista icons/.icl files/etc. Please, help. Thanks. 4 Answers 4You can save HICON s with the IPicture::SaveAsFile() method. Here’s a sample C++ program that uses it: This code handles transparency correctly. I had the same problem and therefore I wrote a function to save icons from an HICON handle to a ICO file. The SaveIcon() function shown below support colors depths of 4, 8, 24, and 32 bits. The PNG icon format is not supported. The function works by constructing the ICO file directly. Fortunately, this is not too difficult, because the ICO format is almost identical to the BMP file format; furthermore, the BMP file format is almost identical to the in-memory representation returned by GetDIBits() . Here is the SaveIcon() function, together with a small test function ( _tmain ): a lot of thanks to user128300. I used his snipet and made some minor changes to get rid of MFC/atx/atl libraries dependency (also it fixes problem with Windows.h that SMUsamaShah mentioned). And i redirected output to vector buffer, but preserved optinal output to a file: |
