Problem while saving a files using ‘Save as’ on Windows 10
Old title: ‘Save file as’ location
we have one user out of a hundred who we upgraded to Windows 10 recently and this user has following issue.
User opens a file on a network drive, lets say «P:\Books\Editorial\Tonyandthecat\Book1v1.1.docx» now the user does some changes and hits «Save as» but instead of changing the name and save directly into the folder «P:\Books\Editorial\Tonyandthecat\» the user gets redirected to the folder where she last saved a file and has to go all the way back to where the original file lays. I hope you can see the problem we have here.
It is the same in Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, PowerPoint 2016 and Excel 2016 (every program where you can hit «Save as»)
Thanks your help is much appreciated

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.
We understand your concern in this regard.
Usually, when you try to save a file, then it will points to location which you accessed before for saving the files. Say for example, if you download a file, and saved it by pointing to the location as My Documents. Now when you try to save a new file, then it will navigate or points you to the same location.
In view of the same, if you have saved any files to the concerned location before, then it will redirect you to the same location, instead redirecting to different location.
Hope this will address your query.

OK maybe you will understand me if I explain a whole scenario.
You start up your machine, open «P:\Coverletters\Designs\LucieTheDog\CoverletterV1.docx» now you do some changes and save it under » P:\Coverletters\Designs\LucieTheDog\ CoverletterV2.docx» and close Word. This Job is finished and you go to your next task.
You go to a different location and open «P:\Books\Editorial\Tonyandthecat\BookV1.docx» you do some changes and click «Save as» now instead of being directly in the folder » P:\Books\Editorial\Tonyandthecat\» you are in the Folder » P:\Coverletters\Designs\LucieTheDog\» and have to navigate your way back to the Folder where the original file lays you just edited.
As this editor does this all day this is very inconvenient and sucks up a fair bit of time.
Thanks for your help

Yes, that is what I’m trying to convey. As I explained, while saving any file, you will be redirected to the last accessed location, where you saved prior file.
In you scenario, you’re trying to access a file from «P:\Books\Editorial\Tonyandthecat\BookV1.docx». But, before this you have accessed the location » P:\Coverletters\Designs\LucieTheDog and saved the file CoverletterV1.docx to it.
So after modify the file, when you click «Save as», then you will be redirected to P:\Coverletters\Designs\LucieTheDog, as because it is the location which you have accessed lastly for saving the file CoverletterV1.docx.

Thanks for your effort Yashwanth.
But I can not agree with you, the click on «Save as» should always open the ‘Browse’ window redirected to the path of the original file you opened. As I use Windows 10 myself I did test it on my machine and it does what it should do, redirect me, in the browse window of save as, to the location of the original file.
This works even with a Shortcut, in case you have an Excel file Shortcut on your desktop which original location is in a Mapped network drive, deep down in some folder structure. You open it, change it, hit save as and your browse window will show you the real exact location where your Shortcut is referring to. Even after saving multiple files in different locations all over the company network before.
Thanks a lot your help is much appreciated.

Likewise I have this problem, certainly with word and excel. it went away for a day them Microsoft upgraded W10 and its back! I also can’t delete PDF’s because the computer says the file is still open, that might be a OneDrive problem though.
Whatever the problem is I don’t have time to fanny around trying to sort it. THE PROBLEM IS MICROSOFT’S AND THEY SHOULD SORT IT PRONTO, IT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN WITH A FULLY SORTED PRODUCT. The reason it takes drug companies so long to get a product on the market is they have to do serious testing because their products can be a matter of life or **** the user, fortunately I haven’t heard of anyone being killed by Microsoft (excluding suicides caused by frustration)
GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER MICROSOFT AND SORT IT OUT!

Windows 10 very slow to save files
I have nearly the same problem as shown in https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-files/windows-10-save-as-hanging-slow-when-selecting/afbe14a5-d2eb-457c-9fd9-5f89fa49588b
When I try to save a file, there is a long 10-15 second delay before the file browser shows a file location. This occurs on ALL applications. It started in December 2017. I have not been able to determine if a Windows update did this or what happened. Every time I want to save a file or load a file, the file browser opens with a «Working on it. » message that lasts for several seconds before it continues to work normally.
This is a one user, one computer system. I am logged in as administrator. This can not be traced to any specific software. It occurs for every program and started doing this since December 2017.

It is not slow to startup. I have not made any recent changes to this PC.
The problem occurs even when there is only one small program running. The problem is not limited to one specific program but occurs with everything. Even Notepad is affected by this slow ability to save or open files.
I am using Windows 10 Home, Version 1709 Build 16299.192. All programs run without slowdown or difficulty. Opening File Explorer or trying to save or open a file from any program runs into a long delay. Opening File explorer from the taskbar may take up to 30 seconds. Trying to save a file or load a file from a program opens the File explorer window with a «Working on it. » message for up to 15 seconds before it will actually allow files to be saved or loaded.
There is sufficient free drive space available (240 GB free on 1TB drive). All routine Windows Updates and self-maintenance (such as defragmenting) have been successfully performed by Windows properly. There is plenty of RAM (12GB) on this Intel I7 Quad system. I am the only user. It is not networked or shared. The problem exists even when taken offline (disconnected from Ethernet, no WiFi is used)
How to Fix Non-responding «Save As» Function on Windows and Mac OS?
Issue: How to Fix Non-responding «Save As» Function on Windows and Mac OS?
When I click on the button, it does not respond and goes blank. Do you have any idea how to solve it? Can it be possibly a virus?
Non-responding or “Save As” function might be the result of several problems. Thus, it is important to identify the issue when and under what circumstances the error appears. It might be tied to a specific application or occur momentarily.
In some rare cases, malicious presence might be at fault for such behavior. In that case, make use of Reimage Mac Washing Machine X9 application. Run the scan for any possible threats. If the cause lies not in a fraudulent file, you might check the following methods.
Option 1. Repair corrupted registry files
Some users have reported that they were able to solve the problem by running the incorporated System File Checker. For your surprise, indeed it may come in handy if files got corrupted.
- In Windows OS, right-click on the Start button or Windows key+X and choose Command Prompt(Admin).
- Once the application launches, enter sfc /scannow.
- Wait for the process to finish. If the non-responding Save as function was a result of corrupted system files, a notification should appear indicating them. Finally, the program will inform when the problems are repaired.
Option 2. Reinstall the faulty program
Naturally, if you cannot save solely .pdf or .doc files, you might try reinstalling Adobe Reader or MS Office. Speaking of the former option, some users reported that the program contained bugs which resulted in the function failure. Make sure you download the legitimate program. Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player often happen to be hackers’ manipulation tools.
Note that in Adobe Reader DC (Document Cloud), “Save as” function works a bit differently. You can save the files in the cloud storage or in a previously used location. When the application attempts to store the file in the cloud, “Save As” function may not function properly. You may need to disable the cloud storage location function.
Open Acrobat’s preferences, navigate to the General tab and remove the checkmark from Show online storage when saving files. This option might be especially practical if you experience the issue on Mac OS.
Option 3. Install current Windows updates
If “Save as” error happens from time to time and you cannot pinpoint the case, you might attempt to install all current Windows updates. It is common sense that Windows 10 still has a number of bugs, so interrupted installation of a specific update may have resulted “Save As” function failure.
