Latest update (March 22nd, 2021 — ver 2.26):
Take the following steps to allow others to transfer files to/from your computer:
1: Fill in the user/password fields with a user/password combination of your choice.
2: Select the port, and directory to give others access to.
3: Click start! Now other users can access your files via Core FTP client (SSH/SFTP option checked).
Many computers will have a firewall preventing others from accessing your computer. To get around this issue, open up Port 22 for incoming connections. This will be the only port that is open due to the ssh/sftp protocol one connection connectivity.
This SFTP server version has no permissions setup to prevent others from deleting your files. If using NTFS, you can protect your files by changing their permissions or changing files to be ‘read only’ all other hard drive formats from windows explorer.
To start the sftp server automatically, add ‘-start’ to the command line parameter or shortcut (ver 1.03 >=)
There will be more updates in the very near future, please bear with us!

Windows Server 2016/2012R2.
- Передача файлов и команд происходит внутри защищенной SSH-сессии;
- Для передачи файлов и команд используется одно соединение;
- Поддержка символических ссылок, функций прерывания, возобновления передачи, удаления файла и пр;
- Как правило, на каналах, где FTP работает медленно или с перебоем, SFTP-соединение работает более надежно и быстро;
Windows
Windows 10 1803+/Windows Server 2019
Feature on Demand (FoD).
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Server*
Или с помощью DISM:
dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:OpenSSH.Server
Windows 10 (Settings -> Apps -> Optional Features -> Add a feature -> Open SSH Server -> Install).
Windows Server 2016/2012 R2
C:\OpenSSH-Win
OpenSSH: Cd C:\OpenSSH-Win
- Добавьте путь к каталогу OpenSSH в переменную окружения Path;
- Установите сервер OpenSSH: .\install-sshd.ps1 (должно появиться зеленое сообщение “sshd and ssh-agent services successfully installed”);
SSHD: Stop-Service sshd
Portable Use
Using Portable Executable
WinSCP can be downloaded in the form of standalone Portable executables. The executables in the Portable executables package are identical to the executables in an Installation package. The difference is that the installer pre-configures the executables to override their default portable behavior.
Portable executables are intended for advanced users and specific needs. For general use, use installer.
On startup, the Portable executable looks for an INI file in the directory from which it was started. The INI file must have an .ini extension and the same name as the executable. If the executable does not find any, it creates one with a default configuration. This allows you to easily carry WinSCP with your configuration on a removable media or a USB drive. For details, see auto-selecting configuration storage.
You may also use an INI file in a different folder or with a different name using an /ini switch.
Full Portability
With default configuration WinSCP still stores some temporary data on the file system of the host computer. You can configure WinSCP to be completely portable though, i.e. make it store all its files and configuration in one place – for example, a portable USB drive.
WinSCP stores by default these files to the host computer:
- Random seed file (file winscp.rnd in C:\Users\username folder);
- Temporary files (system temporary folder).
You can force WinSCP to store the files into different locations in preferences. You can use local paths relative to the WinSCP start folder.
To change the storage directly in an INI file, to the same locations where WinSCP is started from, set following parameters:
12 Best SFTP Server Software for Windows in 2021
With the rise of distributed networks, finding a secure way to transfer files and data is essential. That’s where software products like Secure File Transfer Protocol, better known as SFTP, comes in.
File Transfer Protocol has been around since 1971; the encrypted version was developed in 1994. This popular file transfer communication protocol is able to make sure that your data is able to travel to remote servers safely over unsecured mediums such as the Internet etc.
SFTP was created as an extension for the Secure Shell protocol (SSH) 2.0 as a way to bolster security during file transfers. It also supports file access and management in environments that don’t have data or command channels.
With this software, the commands and data are encrypted and transported in secure packets through one secure connection running on TCP port 22.
Unlike the legacy FTP protocol which requires a control/command connection (TCP port 21) and a data connection (TCP port 20), the SFTP protocol works exclusively over TCP port 22.
Aside from security, why do you need to use SFTP software?
File transfer protocol (FTP) is used to send data packets from one server to another, but data packets are not encrypted.
SSH protocol on the other hand provides a set of rules and guidelines for the safe conduct of data communications in unsecure environments. SFTP server software makes use of SSH and requires a dedicated SFTP client for performing the file transfer.
Authentication with SFTP server software encrypts data in two ways. First, the authentication mechanism asks for a password and user ID that allows a connection to the system. Next, SSH keys are used to verify the user ID and password, which requires having a public and private key; the SSH keys can also be used alone, but two-factor authentication provides better security.
Table of Contents
What are the Advantages of Using SFTP Over FTP?
Aside from the advantage of having multiple layers of encryption, there are other benefits to installing SFTP server software.
- Faster file transfers due to the binary format; speed is second only to security for providing user satisfaction.
- No need for a dedicated control channel because SFTP uses a single connection for both control and data packets.
- Consistent security through SSH; it can’t be turned off or disabled by anyone.
- Machine readable format.
- Also includes operations for performing file locking, permissions, and manipulating attributes.

With the new versions of Windows 10, and I believe also Windows Server, it is fairly easy to setup OpenSSH’s SFTP server. I wrote out simple directions to configure and use it with ISE on my blog at https://packitforwarding.com/index.php/2019/05/08/windows-server-openssh-for-cisco-ise/
Looks like you are missing Couchdrop.io? May not be software, but it is an incredible cloud SFTP service?
Network Master says
Titan Ftp Server, /n Software and Rebex Tiny Sftp Server are great products. I’ve used Titan for over 10 years for both my Cisco backups and for giving file access to remote users (Titan has an optional web browser connection that’s easy to use and I don’t have to help remote users configure it). That said, serv-u and Filezilla are complete garbage! If you really want a “best of” list, you should remove these. Serv-u crashed all the time for me, and there support is horrible. Filezilla is loaded with spyware.
Thanks for mentioning Titan SFTP Server here. I work for the developer of the product, and wanted to clarify that the company name is actually SRT and not Titan. I also wanted to briefly comment on the cost of Titan SFTP and hopefully shine some light on why the cost may seem higher than other products listed.
A full year of technical support is included with your initial purchase, and subsequent support renewals are offered at a discount. Our support agents all have at least 8 years of experience with SRT products, and the original developers are still with the company. All of our support engineers are Tier 2 and 3, so you’ll never get someone simply reading questions off of a list– support is tailored to the customer and their experience.
We are also committed to staying ahead of the current security standards, so customers never have to worry about lagging behind.
