Since upgrading to Windows 8.1 Pro my computer goes to the blue repair screens on boot ups and restarts. An MS tech had me create a new user because he thought my original user was corrupted. I thought it was fixed but it returned a few months later.

I have a way to copy a good msisadrv.sys into the system32\drivers folder from the Command Prompt. This is how I have use Windows 8.1. I have to use DOS commands. How irritating is that? It’s going to be 2016 and I’m still using DOS commands to run Windows.

Will upgrading to Windows 10 solve my problem?

You might also require to change the boot priority in BIOS in order to allow the computer to boot from CD/DVD.

Important : While scanning the hard drive if any bad sectors are found, the scanner tries to repair that sector, any data available on that might be lost.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Can’t boot — missing/corrupt msisadrv.sys driver Error 0xc0000098

My son’s Toshiba Satellite runs Vista 32 bit. The system froze and would not reboot. Figuring it needed wiping and starting fresh again, he reformatted the PC with Toshiba recovery discs, which worked well a few months ago. This time, his computer won’t boot, saying it’s missing a major driver. We cannot use system restore because it’s been wiped. When trying to start in any mode of Windows, we receive a Windows Boot Manager error message:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

Info: Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt.

We tried Windows repair on the freshly installed system and received:

Is this a software problem that can be fixed with access to the msisadrv.sys driver or new Windows discs, or is the corrupt volume signifying damaged hardware, needing a new hard drive?

There is a possibility that there are some errors on the hard drive causing the error message at boot.

To check if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive would suggest running chkdsk which would scan for any bad sectors on the hard drive and if those errors are repairable if would repair and if it cannot at the end of the chkdsk scan you would see a message “found one or more unrecoverable error on the hard drive” which means the hard drive is damaged.

If you have a Windows Vista installation disc, you need to restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc. If you do not restart your computer from the disc, the option to repair your computer will not appear.

1. Insert the installation disc.
2. Restart your computer.
Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.
3. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
Note: If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You may need to change your computer’s BIOS settings. For more information, see BIOS: frequently asked questions.
4. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
