How to fix “Windows can not find a certificate to log you on the network” error on Windows XP

When you try to log onto a wireless network, you may see this error message: “Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you onto the network xxxx”.

This error is typically related to wireless network authentication and often appears because your Windows device is mistakenly searching for an 802.1x connection. To correct this error, follow the steps below.

Step 1

Select Start Menu>Control Panel.

Step 2

Double-click Network Connections in the new window.

Step 3

Right-click wireless network connection, then select Properties.

Step 4

Select the Wireless Networks tab, and then select the network from the bottom list. Select Properties once you locate the wireless network causing the error.

Step 5

Select the Authentication tab and uncheck the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network box.

If the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network box is checked, it will trigger the “unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network” message because Windows is looking for a certificate but your wireless router is not set up for certificate security.

Step 6

Select the Connection tab and check the Connect when this network is in range box.

Step 7

Select the Association tab and uncheck the “The key is provided for me automatically” box, then select Network Authentication & Data encryption and type in the Network key according to the wireless settings on your router.

Note: If you are not able to locate the Network key, contact your router’s technical support for assistance.

Step 8

Select OK, and then OK again to save your settings.

Once the error is fixed, Windows can automatically log you onto the network.

We are experiancing intermitent, but increasingly frequent issues with users logging on and being unable to load their profile. Error is below..It seems to be related to users passwords expiring, but why is this killing the profile?

The belwo KB fixes it, but the service desk are having to do this on each machine, so checking if anyone has a global fix and an idea as to why this keep re-occuring..

In the KB link you mentioned, there are three methods present. Did you try all the methods?

Also, if the issue persists, create a new user account, and copy all the personal/important files to that user account. Delete the existing user account.

In that case, run SFC scan, when you can logon. Any corrupt system files can also cause the issue. Also, make sure User Profile Service Startup type is set to Automatic and is running.

If you are unable to logon, try in Safe Mode.

Preventive solution is to reinstall Windows as a lot of files are corrupted, as you say. Cure is to run SFC/create a new user account. Also, make sure the PCs are free from any malware infection.

Personally, it’s a good practice to perform clean install every 6 months or 12 months, after backing up important files, to maintain stability. This is because, with usage over time, a lot of temporary files get congested, in conventional HDD type fragmentation increases and errors raise in registry which Windows is not capable of cleaning by itself. Of course, in a corporate scenario, clean installation may not be possible with a large number of PCs. Therefore, imaging a clean installed Windows and restoring it across other PCs is an efficient solution.

What can I do if I can’t log in to Windows 10?

1. Check your keyboard

1. On login screen on the bottom right click Ease of Access icon.
2. Find On-screen keyboard and click it.
3. Keyboard should appear on your screen.
4. Use your mouse to enter the password and try to log in again.

Make sure that if you’re using a localised keyboard that you’re entering the correct password. Sometimes with localised keyboards, key placement might be a bit different so keep that in mind.

Sometimes special characters or numbers in some rare cases can be assigned to different keys when you use a localised keyboard, so that might be preventing you from accessing Windows 10.

If you still have trouble logging in to Windows 10, you can always try using a different keyboard especially if your current keyboard has different letter placement. So if you have spare keyboard try connecting it to your computer and using it to log in to Windows 10.

This solution sounds simple, but it has been confirmed that it works by many users so make sure that you give it a try.

2. Make sure you’re connected to the internet

If you recently change your Microsoft Account password in the web browser, there’s a chance your computer hasn’t ‘registered’ it yet.

So, before moving on, make sure your computer is connected to the internet. This will allow your PC ‘to’ register the new password, and you’ll be able to log in to your PC again.

7. Press 5 or F5 on your keyboard to choose Enable Safe Mode with Networking.
8. Wait for your computer to boot.

6. Perform System Restore

1. Restart your computer while holding the SHIFT button
2. The Advanced Startup menu will open on the boot. Go to Troubleshoot.
3. Choose System Restore.
4. Choose your last restore point, and follow further on-screen instructions.
5. Finish the setup.

If something inside your system got corrupt, System Restore is a tool that might come in handy.

7. Scan for viruses

There’s also a chance you’ve picked up a virus somewhere, and it’s blocking you from logging into your PC. So, boot in the Safe Mode, and perform a deep virus scan.

If there are any threats, your antivirus program will remove them, and hopefully, you’ll be able to log in to your computer normally again.

8. Run the SFC scan
