Server updates failing on server 2012 R2

Hello i have been failing windows updates on my 2012 R2 server for a while now.. Its connected to WSUS and tells me what updates i need but it fails to install them.. Also when i run the updates directly from Microsoft it installs a few but the update roll-ups fails..

Can anyone please guide me in the right direction as to which route i need to take to get windows patching working on this server.. Its a virtual machine running server 2012 r2. The server is connect to a WSUS server and i tried to do updated from the server directly going to the microsoft but getting errors.

Recently we installed our first Windows Server 2012 R2 machines. They connect to WSUS replicas which are installed on Windows Server 2008 R2. All WSUS servers have KB2734608 and KB2720211 since they came out. I noticed the following errors in WindowsUpdate.log which I think are the root cause, why they can’t update (replaced senstive information with . ):

I don’t have the problem with Windows Server 2012 without R2.

It detects the missing update which is KB2917500.

It detects *ONE* missing update. We have no idea what that update actually is from this log snippet. We also do not know whether the update is already downloaded or not, or whether it’s scheduled for installation, or not, because that part of the log is not present.

But it did not install the update and reboot the server automatically on Thursday 03:00 AM as configured in the group policy.

Well, the Friday log snippet provided is somewhat irrelevant to that point. Maybe the update wasn’t downloaded by 3am on Thursday; maybe it wasn’t available at 3am Thursday.

Which would you like to diagnose: Why it didn’t install yesterday, or Whether it’s going to install at the next installation event?

As maybe there was some coincidence which prevented the update I put the server in another policy, which tells the server to install and reboot on Monday 03:00 AM. Will look at it when I get in the office next week and let you know.

Or we could look at the right section of the logfile right now and we’ll know authoritatively whether this update will, or will not, be installed next Monday and not have to wait another 3-4 days.

It was KB2917500 as I mentioned.

I understand that is your interpretation. The provided log entries do not confirm this as fact. No offense intended, but I’ve learned after several times bitten, that unless I see it in the logfile, it’s not a fact that can be used for diagnosis of an issue.

On the server it wasn’t downloaded and therefore also not scheduled for installation.

Also, the logfile still provides no information as to the attempted download, or download failure of that update, or any other update. In fact, all that you’ve provided is a subsequent example of the same 2 second detection event.

We do know that one update has been identified as needed, approved, and available, but lacking log entries that show actionable information, we’re really no farther than we were when we started.

Why it didn’t install on 23rd January.

Then you’re going to have to provide the log entries from Jan 23rd at 3:00am to get that information.

As for why it’s still not installing, at this point we’ll need to do this to get all of the log information that will be necessary:

Record the system time.
Restart the Windows Update service.
Run this command: wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow.
Wait THIRTY minutes.
Copy the log entries starting at the time recorded in Step #1 to the END of the logfile and post all of those log entries in a reply.

Other policy is identical except for the install day.

Really not concerned with the policy or intended configuration.

The only thing relevant to this diagnosis is the actual behavior of the client system.

You’re unnecessarily freaking out over an insignificant warning message.

The client downloaded and installed updates. Move on to bigger problems. 🙂

invoked functionality is not supported.

I think the point here is that the errors you have highlighted, are not relevant to the issue you are having.

The Network Cost errors are not related to a detection problem, nor download problem, nor installation problem, these errors are simply saying «I couldn’t work out if this is a metered internet connection, so won’t go on to check if your preferences are to not download over metered connections», as a result, the download occurred (at least for KB2917500 in this case), so, these errors are not stopping anything from happening.

There appears to be no other errors at all in the rest of the log snippet you’ve supplied.

Check further into the logs, keep looking for errors/warnings ?

Why it didn’t install on 23rd January.

Using the other policy the server downloaded and installed the update on Monday. Reboot was not necessary as it seems. Other policy is identical except for the install day. Will monitor the behaviour of Windows Server 2012 R2 installations a little while and let you know.

It was KB2917500 as I mentioned.

We do know that one update has been identified as needed, approved, and available, but lacking log entries that show actionable information, we’re really no farther than we were when we started.

Why it didn’t install on 23rd January.

Then you’re going to have to provide the log entries from Jan 23rd at 3:00am to get that information.

As for why it’s still not installing, at this point we’ll need to do this to get all of the log information that will be necessary:

Record the system time.
Restart the Windows Update service.
Run this command: wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow.
Wait THIRTY minutes.
Copy the log entries starting at the time recorded in Step #1 to the END of the logfile and post all of those log entries in a reply.

Other policy is identical except for the install day.

Really not concerned with the policy or intended configuration.

The only thing relevant to this diagnosis is the actual behavior of the client system.

I also have a problem now with Windows Server 2012 (without R2) machines. They do not reboot after installing the updates, although it is configured. Here is a complete cycle:
