Note: we will try to install the updates one by one and check for the issue.
Download and install the Windows Update agent.
The Windows Update Agent lets you manage which updates will be installed on your computer. The Windows Update Agent works together with the Windows Update Web site to provide the latest updates to your computer. The Windows Update Agent also works together with servers that are running Microsoft System Management Server and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) in a corporate environment.
For more information about how to download and install the latest Windows Update agent, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer

If the above solution doesn’t resolve the issue then follow the below provided steps.

Windows Server 2012 R2
Windows.
Windows.
Shtd.
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TrustedInstaller
Permissions.
2a30 (Hexadecimal).
Windows Update on Windows 7 hangs on Checking for Updates
Running Windows 7 Home Premium edition, x64 edition. Windows Update used to work but stopped working several months ago. Now it hangs forever on «Checking for Updates. » During the time it hangs, TrustedInstaller.exe runs to 50% CPU usage and stays there. This process can be killed but it relaunches in a few seconds. I have tried letting it run overnight, to no resolution.
I have run Fix It multiple times, before/during/after running Windows Update. If Windows Update is currently Checking for Updates, then running Fix It will cause Windows Update to exit without finding any updates (can’t be right — as I said, it’s been months), and the next time Windows Update runs, it hangs again on Checking for Updates.
I have found related threads in the forums but no clear answer. I have tried the manual instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058. In particular, the instructions to register the BITS and Windows Update .dll files (Step 6) do not all work, as follows:
- mshtml.dll, shdocvw.dll, browseui.dll, and qmgr.dll fail with the error: The module [name of the .dll] was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that [name of the .dll] is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again.
- msxml.dll, gpkcsp.dll, sccbase.dll, slbcsp.dll, wuaueng1.dll, wucltui.dll, wuweb.dll, and muweb.dll do not exist in my System32 folder.
Finally, I am unable to download a new Windows Update agent (Step 11). The download at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104 does not seem to apply to Windows 7.
I last successfully installed updates on 7/2/2011, including the following Updates for Windows 7 for x64-based systems: KB2552343, KB2533552, KB2547666, KB2545698, KB2534366, KB2541014.

Strangely, now we are a day on since I posted my update and you kindly responded, we find that our laptop is now back up to full working speed. We don’t understand why, or why it was so grindingly slow immediately after the upgrade, but we are grateful and will leave things as they are for now. Thanks. One thing I haven’t been able to follow in your instructions is in both the steps you suggested I try you begin with ‘Press Windows key and type. ‘ When I press Windows key it opens up the start menu, but I can see nowhere to type anything. Should I expect there to be a search box?

Been trying to update my window 10 (july18 2017) for the past 2 days. It hangs on 88% also. Tried twice and still won’t work. I have to force stop my pc but when I turn it on again, it’trying to resume the update. Can I just go back to what it was without that update ? If so, can you explain to me how to do that. I’m not a computer whiz and I’ very frustrated. I have a Acer, nothing to complain about.

I also have an Acer (Aspire X1930). Went to shutdown last night (Aug 11th) and it went into an automatic update/restart process.
Update seemed to go well. Went to bed and left my computer to continue doing it’s thing. Couldn’t sleep so thought I would check on the status.
That was at 1:30 AM EST and the blue screen displayed «Working on Update 88% — Don’t turn off you PC. This will take a while. Your PC will restart several times. The little dots that slowly circle around over top of the message have stopped moving.
I’m still unable to sleep and sitting here now at 3:10 AM EST and the screen has not changed in the slightest and the dots are still at a standstill.
So what gives. I am SO frustrated with Windows 10 — have had nothing but annoying issues that seem to come and go on there own. Which I had not upgraded from Windows 7 — loved the program and never had any issues with it whatsoever.
So how do we go about fixing this NEW mess.

Just to add to your comment. I have an Acer unit as well. When the Freebie Windows Upgrade came around, my machine was on Windows 7 Professional. I attempted the upgrade to Windows 10 several time with lots of difficulty. Microsoft’s answer was to buy a new copy of Windows 8.1, re-image my hard drive, and upgrade from there. At the time, the Pro version was too expensive to upgrade so I bought the Windows 8.1 Home edition and upgraded to Windows 10 from there. Then everything went smoothly from there, but had to forfeit my Pro edition. And Microsoft would not address my issue with getting my Windows 10 Pro edition reset either. So, I’m out $200 because of another Microsoft blunder. If this keeps up, I’m replacing the system with Linux. At least I know there’s 80K plus folks out there who care about their fellow computer users.
So, back to the issue at hand. I was able to shutdown the computer with a hard shutdown. Disable all the services/startup programs etc. Rebooted the system and ran the «Check for Updates». It came back and stuck at 88% again. I did a cold shutdown one more time and ran the Troubleshooter for the Maintenance update. It detected and fixed 6 issues. Then when I re-ran the check for update, the system reports that the device has the latest update.
I re-ran the check for update several time with the same results. I just finished running SFC /SCANNOW to see if there were any corruption and it found there were some windows core files being corrupted.
So, I guess I’ll have to be spending the most of my weekend troubleshooting this.. 🙁
