Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.
Let me ask you a few questions to understand the issue better;
- Are you referring a particular update or multiple?
- Do you remember making any specific change in the computer prior to the issue?
The issue can be caused due to various reasons.
Kindly refer to the article below and try the steps mentioned in it.
Note: DO NOT try the suggestion for In-Place Upgrade from the article.
When you perform clean boot: Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. You need to follow the steps from the article mentioned below to perform a Clean Boot.
Note: Refer «How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting» to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.
When you perform System Restore: When you use System Restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed are removed.
Hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to reply in case you face any other issues with Windows in future.

Firstly thanks alot for your fast response and help,
secondly, i am referring to the «automatic windows update performing by the system», i didn’t change anything to affect that action, as sometimes some «very few» updates successfully done, but the majority of it fails (which is always happening lately),
about the troubleshooting you shared, i tried the «clean boot», and restarted, it updated successfully, but how can i know which application/software causing that issue?

You’re most welcome and thank you for keeping us updated on the issue and glad to know that the primary issue has been resolved.
To answer your next question, how can i know which application/software causing that issue?
You can try this:
While performing clean boot as you check the box Hide all Microsoft Services, all the Microsoft services gets hidden and whatever is left, are third party services within the window. If you remember you clicked on Disable all.
To verify which software/program is causing the issue, you may click and put check in the box next to program one by one and start the computer.
You may also refer to the section How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot under For more information by clicking here.
Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know the result, we’ll be glad to assist you.
Windows 10 fails to restart after monthly updates

Thank you for posting in Community, we understand the inconvenience faced by you.
Before we proceed, I would like you to provide the information stated below:
1. Did you set your settings to install your updates once a month?
2. What exactly do you mean when you state «monthly Windows automatic update»?
3. Can you provide the details or KB number of the recently installed update which caused the issue?
The issue that you are facing might be due to a specific update that installs during the monthly Windows update.
For now, I would suggest that you refer to the section Blue screen error after update is Installed in the article Troubleshoot blue screen errors provided in the link below.
Hope this information helps.

Thank you for your reply, Vanessa. My settings are for automatic updates (recommended). I have the option to receive updates from other PCs on my network turned off. I picked up reference to monthly Windows updates in another forum. Sorry for the confusion. My computer failed to restart after updates on Dec. 30, 2015. My update history lists «Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3132372)» for that date. The last time prior to Dec. 30 it failed to restart after an update was on Dec. 9. For that date, my update history lists two items: «Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3122947)» and «Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3119147)». There were two previous times it failed to start after automatic updates but my update history does not list anything prior to Dec. 9. I did not have this problem before upgrading from Windows 7 to 10.
I hope you can help me.

Windows 7 Updates failed can’t restart?
Hi,
This issue started with the updates last week after the updates, when I restart my computer with widows 7 home premium x64 bit it boots to black screen and sits there, harddrive not active, or it boots to the try to repair or run windows normally options. The repair doesn’t work and fianlly after it is doen my computer just shuts down. The restart windows normally was working (till today) to at least get my computer up and usable. Also at the same time internet explorer 9 started not being able to be used, I launch it, then it closes saying a program prevented it from running. Sometime would work if I reopened it.
Today I tried to restore my computer to before the updates as I am pretty sure I had an interrupted update which is now causing booting issue for my computer. But it didn’t help, tried downloading some update agai to see, but since it won’t reboot properly the updates fail? I have nearly everything I could find (sfc, various fix it tools, checked various registry spots, reset IE9, the fix it on my computer, readiness tool xs2, and something else) and had to restore my computer twice to get to my desktop and be able to use it. I can’t find a single tool to check for incomplete update fragments or registry error it could have caused?
There are a few other things listed here, but I didn’t know what the carroot folder and other do or controll and didn’t want to further mess anything up? (did options 1 — doesn’t restart right, 2, 3, and 5 — there wasn’t any of those) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2509997?wa=wsignin1.0
Can anyone help or shead some light as to how to find/fix whatever is going on. It was fine till these updates, and due to the restores I have no error codes, just one screen showing failed on my phone, and one thing showing a few items fixed, but they didn’t help.
Windows Updates Failed Or Requires Restart
Windows 10 Build 10130. Yesterday, June 11th, there were 6 updates offered. 4 are now showing «failed to install» and one (Flash Player) shows «successfully installed». If my memory is correct the «failed to install» initially showed «requires a restart» even after the computer was rebooted. Checking windows updates in the control panel programs indicates they were installed. Were they installed or not?
Is Windows 10 really going to be ready for public release on July 29th. This particular build is fraught with blue screens and other niggling issues that would be a real disaster if released worldwide. I’ve tried to post most of the issues in the feedback program but sometimes the blue screen errors go away before I have a chance to write down what the indicated error is.
Why is the only Windows Topics selection I’m offered «Upgrade Reservation»? This post has nothing to do with the reservation but I have no other alternatives and current operating system does not include Windows 10.

Tried the manual download link and it opened with my default browser Firefox. Wouldn’t let me download anything and advised if I wanted to use the page I had to use Internet Explorer. Tried the new Edge browser and all I got was a page advising me to use the start menu to access Windows Update. Opened Internet Explorer and got to the page but it had message that I needed to install an add on if I wanted to download anything. Clicked through the OK’s to install the add on and got another message that it wouldn’t work.
windows update stuck at restarting
I am running on windows 10 2004 (which I upgraded from 1909 to 2004 Sunday 29/09/2020 night)
Today when I go to settings page and checked for update the «October 1, 2020-KB4576945 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10, version 2004 and Windows Server, version 2004» was download and installed.
When it asked me to restart my laptop, I pressed «Restart now». Then the screen stuck at Restarting with the dots circling in the screen for about 10-15 minutes. Then I force shutdown my laptop and rebooted and again the same Restarting. screen appears.
Again I force shutdown and Restart my laptop. Now it shows «Working on updates» and installed the update and went into my homescreen. Because of this problem, I run the troubleshooter for windows update and it shows that «check for windows update issues — Detected» as shown in the attached image.
And I thought it would be because of an optional update pending and hence I installed the optional update «October 1, 2020—KB4577063 (OS Build 19041.546) Preview» and the same problem of restarting screen persists and i again rebooted it as i have done before (force shutdown and reboot) and i again run the troubleshooter and i get the same results only.
Then i uninstalled both the updates «KB4576945 and KB4577063» and i run the troubleshooter again and still the problem of «check for windows update issues- Detected» continues.
Again the system automatically installs the KB4576945 and asked me reboot the laptop and when i press reboot now this time, the same problem continues again. The troubleshooter too shows the same problem this time.
Anyone kindly help me to resolve this issue.
