How to change User File name of the User Account in Windows 10.

Original Title: Users File name

I’m quite self conscious about file names on my computer. I’m particularly bothered by the name which is inside the USERS section and can’t be renamed. I’ve searched everywhere online and I found out that it’s got to to with the Username that is imputed E.g Bob Jones and the Users file is named Bob.

I have a Microsoft account so if I use Windows recovery and then select delete files and apps and then reboot the computer(not factory reboot=the Second Option) , will it let me choose my username, changing the the file name ?

I am logged in my Microsoft account and its a administrator on the system. This is the path: This PC > Local Disk > Users .

the file is called owenl and it contains files like AppData, Pictures etc. When I right click, there is no option of renaming. Like I said i think the file is named like that because of the username. If I reboot computer to remove files and apps, will I be able to input my username thus changing the file name in users?

I suggest you to enable the default Administrator account and then try to perform the below steps to edit the user folder name. Check if it helps.

Step 1: I recommend you to enable the default administrator account and try to delete the extra account.

1. Press Windows Key + X Key.

2. Click on Command Prompt(Admin).

3. Type the following command and hit on Enter Key:

net user administrator /active:yes

4. Sign out the current use account and try to sing in with default administrator account which will be displayed as Administrator in the login page.

Step 2: After login to the default administrator account, please to try to perform the below steps again and check if it helps.

Try to rename the folder by following below steps.

1. Open File Explorer and then open User profile folder.

2. Click on the user folder, then tap on F2 Key.

3. Try to rename the folder and hit on Enter Key.

4. If prompted for administrator permission, then click on Continue.

When you are done with the troubleshooting the issue. Then try to disable the Default Administrator account.

1. Press Windows Key + X Key.

2. Click on Command Prompt(Admin).

3. Type the following command and hit on Enter Key:

net user administrator /active:no

4. Then Restart your Computer.

Discalimer: If you face any difficulties in logging to the user account after changing the user name through Default Administrator, then try to change the name of user name back to its original user name.

How to Change Your Account Name on Windows 10

When you set up a new Windows 10 PC, the part where you choose your username may catch you off guard. If that’s the case, you may choose the first thing that pops into your head or something random and temporary that you intend to change later. But surprisingly enough, changing your account name in Windows 10 isn’t exactly a straightforward process. It can be done, but there are a few important things to consider as you go about it. Read on for the details.

Change Account Name and Rename User Account Folder in Windows 10

Your username is part of your identity used to sign in to Windows 10. Mistakes can sometimes happen when creating a username. There are several ways you can fix that.

Currently, the Settings app doesn’t offer an option to edit usernames. There are two ways to work around this limitation.

Method 1: Classic Control Panel

Find and open the classic Control Panel. One way to do this is to press Windows + R and then type Control then hit Enter.

Open the User Accounts control panel, then click Manage another account.

Click the account you want to edit.

Click Change the account name.

Enter the correct username for the account then click Change Name.

Method 2: User Accounts Advanced Control Panel

There is another way you can do it.

Press Windows key + R, type: netplwiz or control userpasswords2 then hit Enter.

Select the account, then click Properties.

Select the General tab then enter the user name you want to use. Click Apply then OK, then click Apply then OK again to confirm the change.

What about Your User Folder Name?

Changing the username is pretty basic, but this change is not reflected in the User folder located within the C: drive. Renaming it can be risky—sometimes sticking with it or just creating a new user account then copying your files to the new account is a better option. Yes, it’s annoying, but it’s better than ending up with a corrupt user profile.

If you must change it to hush your OCD, there is an advanced option available. This involves using the command line to access the security identifier (SID) then making the necessary change in the Registry. Before you go any further, enable then log into the built-in Administrator account. As a precaution, create a system restore point in advance.

To access all the information within the SID requires using the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line to reveal the value needed to find and change it in the Registry. Open the command prompt with Administrator privileges, type: wmic useraccount list full then hit Enter. Scroll down then take note of the SID values for the account you want to change.

The next step is to rename the account. Doing this from the command line is just as easy.

For example, rename “Angry Dah Cosof” “Angela Brown”

Open Start, type: regedit

Right-click Regedit.

Click Run as administrator.

Remember that SID value we accessed earlier? Now is the time to reference it.

Once you find it, select it, then double-click the value ProfileImagePath. You will see the old name we had earlier is still there. Change it to the new name you want to use.

There you have it, the name you actually intended. Mistakes like this can happen, but there is always a way to fix them.

I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it helps.

Method 1: Please follow the steps to rename the user account.

1. In the search box, type user accounts and click on User Accounts.
2. Click on “Change your account name”
3. If it’s prompting for password please enter and click on Yes. If you do not have password click on Yes.
4. Enter the new user name.
5. Click on change name.

Method 2:

Note: Before you start, please back up all you data and create a system restore point first.

1. Press Windows Key + R combination and then type netplwiz in the Run dialog box. Click OK. If prompted for UAC, click Yes.
2. Now in the User Accounts window, check Users must enter a user name and password to enter this computer, if it is unchecked.
3. In the User Name section, select the user name to which you want to change the name and click Properties.
4. In the Properties window, in the User name field, provide the desired user name. Then click Apply followed by OK.
5. Reboot to see the change.

Change User Folder name: Even after you change the username using this method, your personal folder will continue to display the old username. To rename the user folder, do the following.

1. Create a system restore point first. Then open Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

2. You will find several folders here like S-1-5-. Search through them till you find a ProfileImagePath pointing to your old username. Double-click on it and replace your old username with your new username.

3. Restart your computer to see the change.

I am running Windows 10 build 1803 and I have noticed over the weekend that my user folder name is complete.

How can I rename my folder name to my complete name?

When I first login, my full name is shown.

Step 1: log into the local Administrator Account:

Open Start
Type: cmd
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

At the command prompt, type:
net user administrator/active:yes

Close command prompt, restart, then try signing into the Administrator account.

Open Start
Type: cmd
Right click CMD
Click Run as administrator

At the command prompt, type:

wmic user account list full then hit Enter. Scroll down then take note of the SID values for the account you want to change.

Type: cls to clear the screen. The next step is to rename the account. Doing this from the command line is just as easy.

Type CD c:\users then hit Enter.
Type: rename OldAccountName NewAccountName

For example, rename “Jack TheRipper” “Jack Ruby”

Open Start, type: regedit

Click Run as administrator.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Remember that SID value we accessed earlier? Now is the time to reference it.

Once you find it, select it, then double-click the value ProfileImagePath. You will see the old name we had earlier is still there. Change it to the new name you want to use.

I went to that link and my name shown there is ok, it is my folder name (c:\users\username) that isn’t complete, it only shows part of my name and not my complete name.

That is one hell of a mouthful of commands that you lost me

Microsoft should have made it easy to change your c:\users\username

I guess I’ll just stick with my shortened name until I decide to do a clean install.

What if I went through the registry and changed all instances of my shortened name to my full name?

I think what you’re referring to is when you install Windows with a MS Account and it cannot connect to the account to import your full name, it truncates the email address and uses the first five letters. This is annoying to many including myself, so I filed it as a bug to be fixed a few years ago and finally got an answer back that they intend to leave it that way.

The solution is that when you install WIndows to always set up a Local Account first, then when you get into Windows you can change it to a MS Account: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5375-switch.

For now until you reinstall one other thing you can do is to create a new Local Admin account http://www.howtogeek.com/226540/how-to-create-a. , change your Microsoft account to a Local Account to release it following http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-tip-swi. then restart into the new Local Account to associate your MS Account with it.

Since this is clearly not satisfactory If you want to express your opinion on this to Microsoft use the Feedback Hub app in Start Menu where developers are tasked to process consumer feedback.
