Admittedly a virtual memory issue is somewhat broader in scope than mere gaming, but for me, sadly, the gaming takes priority.
So, in the ongoing saga of small irritations following replacing my hard disk and doing a partial restore from backup disk, I’m noticing that sometimes while running a game (in particular, EA Games’s Mass Effect 1 from the Origin Client), the «insufficient virtual memory» type message comes up and recommends that I increase the allotted amount of the virtual paging file.
Numerous posts on various sites suggest setting this to about 1.5x RAM minimum and 3x RAM maximum, but no matter how high I set it, running the game eventually causes the crash and memory error (I can probably duplicate the error message and post it if need be).

Prior to doing the reinstall, this was never an issue for me, so I’m wondering if some default setting on Windows, or a generic system setting or what. I’m fairly certain it’s not related to the settings for the gamesave configurations themselves; I disabled the cloudsaving for all the games that have it, and have everything in the game files set the way it was prior to the crash. I simply can’t get a game to run more than approximately half an hour (more if I up the virtual memory to something ludicrous like 5x min 10x max RAM).
The computer is a Lenovo G560 with Windows 7, and 4 GB RAM, 500GB storage. And as I stated before, it worked fine prior to tearing out the crashed hard drive and replacing it / reloading all the files. Any suggestions?
I realize this may not be a WIndows issue and therefore able to be covered here, and that the odds are decent I’ll simply stumble across how to fix it without knowing how I fixed it, but input would be much appreciated.
