Windows x64 installation failed

Installation of Windows SDK failed on Windows 7 x64. «installation failed with return code 5100»

I try and install the SK and it fails for both the Web installer and the ISO>DVD route. Same error each time:

12:22:50 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2012: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Setup\SFX\vcredist_x64.exe installation failed with return code 5100

The following lines are less than helpful because they suggest going to a place I don’t have.

12:23:21 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2012: [SDKSetup:Error] Config_Products_Install: Installation of Product Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 (failed): Please refer to Samples\Setup\HTML\ConfigDetails.htm document for further information. Stack: at SDKSetup.Product.ConfigureRelatedSfx() at SDKSetup.Product.ConfigureNewProduct(ManualResetEvent CancelEvent)

Any ideas what might be worng? The rest of the log file is too big for this message but I can send it to anyone who can help.

Please perform a Clean Boot (this will ensure no 3rd party application is interferring with the installation) and step through the steps below:

1. Since you already downloaded and installed the System Update Readiness Tool , please just run the tool again and take note of the errors.

2. Click Start type cmd (you should see the command prompt populate at the top) Right-click it and select Run as Administrator
Inside the prompt type sfc /scannow

*For more information regarding the System File Checker .

4. Run the System Update Readiness Tool again. If the errors have been cleared, try installing Service Pack 1 again. If not, move to step 5.

5. Perform a Startup Repair , upon startup, try installing the Service Pack.

Please let us know the details of each scan or utility. We look forward to hearing back from you.

Got «Windows 10 installation has failed.» when installing the official release.

I have tried to install Windows 10 Home on my laptop several times, and each time I got the message «Windows 10 installation has failed.» E very time the installation process gets to the final stage, it stops at 18% with the error message.

The installation DVD was created with MediaCreationToolx64 downloaded on July 29 from Microsoft official Windows web site. It should be the official release of Windows 10.

Some web sites suggest the message is due to an incompatible license. However, my laptop’s Windows 7 Home Premium license is a retail upgrade from Windows XP OEM, and I am trying to upgrade it to Windows 10 Home. According to information on Frequently Asked Questions: Windows 10, it’s a legitimate upgrade path.

The «Get Windows 10» app shows the laptop passed the check and display «You’re good to go.» message.

Anyone has the same installation problem? Any solution?

BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log, I noticed a line

2015-07-30 11:28:50, Error SP SPCopyFilesAndFolders: Failed to copy file G:\x64\Sources\Install.esd -> C:\$WINDOWS.

BT\Sources\Install.esd. hr = 0x80070005[gle=0x00000005]

It’s rather strange because that file was copied to the hard drive from the DVD during the process. Maybe it was timed out due to slow copying? Maybe using USB as the installation media instead of DVD will help?

I had the same issue with the same error message at 18%.

In my case installer apparently tried to overwrite/copy once again install files in C:\$WINDOWS.

BT after the wizard was over, but failed to do so.

Clearing «Read-only» and «System» attribute from all files in C:\$WINDOWS.

BT (while I was at last screen of the wizard — I mean I was about to click «Install») did the trick.

Apparently a bug in Windows 10 installer (why it tries to copy the files twice? even if it is needed, why installer does not clear «Read-only» and/or «system» attributes by itself? why error message is so meaningless?).

TL;DR at the end

I’ve discovered, that the difference between «broken» installation ISO image (the one with «Something happened» at 18% due to trying to copy the file twice) and «good» one is name of file sources/install. When it is named «install.esd», then it gets copied twice from installation media — first at «Preparation (%d%%)» stage (small window just after executing installer) and then after clicking «Install» at the end of upgrade wizard. Of course, if we’re installing from DVD, it fails, as «Install.esd» has «read-only» attribute.

If the file is named «install.wim» instead, then at that «Preparation (%d%%)» small window it is not being copied to c:\$Windows.

BT directory, (progress is much faster) and then, after finishing the upgrade wizard, rest of install is smooth.

If we take «broken» ISO image and just rename sources/install.esd to sources/install.wim, installer starts to behave as intended. Reverse is also true.

File is named install.esd (wrong) when we’re asking Media Creation Tool to prepare dual-architecture (x86 & x64) ISO file. When we ask it to create single-architecture file, then we will get correctly named «install.wim» (tried on x86 only so far). What’s interesting, «install.wim» is different than «installx86.esd», from which it is made — installx86.esd is some 6 megabytes larger. Logs suggests that this installx86.esd might be encrypted (?) though I didn’t investigated it further (for me both looked like the same format with a bit different content).

The culprit is most likely Media Creation Tool — some programmer might have forgotten to handle the case, when *.esd files are to be processed to x86/sources and x64/sources respectively.

I cannot confirm this assumption by creating yet again dual architecture ISO with freshly downloaded Media Creation Tool, as the fresh one now pops up some other error just after start (though at last with some error code instead of just infamous «Something happened»). Anyway, there were apparently changes to Media Creation Tool — the one, that I’ve downloaded on July, 30th, is some 2kb shorter; all files (including those compressed within) seems to be recompiled.
