In the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State, a small town named Forks exists under a near-constant cover of clouds. It rains on this inconsequential town more than any other place in the United States of America. It was from this town and its gloomy, omnipresent shade that my mother escaped with me when I was only a few months old. It was in this town that I’d been compelled to spend a month every summer until Iwas fourteen. That was the year I finally put my foot down; these past three summers, my dad, Charlie, vacationed with me in California for two weeks instead.

It was to Forks that I now exiled myself— an action that I took with great horror. I detested Forks.

I loved Phoenix. I loved the sun and the blistering heat. I loved the vigorous, sprawling city.

«Bella,» my mom said to me — the last of a thousand times — before I got on the plane. «You don’t have to do this.»

— Белла, — позвала мама, и я догадалась, что она сейчас скажет. — Еще не поздно передумать, — в тысячу первый раз предложила она.

3. Разбираем/переводим дословно:
My mother drove me to the airport with the windows rolled down. Моя мама привезла меня в аэропорт (в машине) с опущенными окнами. drove (неправильный глагол drive drove driven). В большинстве случаев можно было перевести как «подбросил» или «отвез», но в данном конкретном подразумевается «вел(а) автомобиль», поскольку есть уточнение, касательно пущенных стекол, которые висят не в портативные галактической дыре, а установлены в автомобиле. windows rolled down – выражение пошло от механические подъемники в машинах в виде вращающейся ручки, которая вращаясь поднимает стекло либо вверх. Либо вниз (да они и сейчас есть во многих машинах).
Здесь автор хочет подчеркнуть, что в городе очень тепло, что можно кататься в машине с открытыми стеклами.

• my — моя.
• mother — мама.
• to drive (drove, driven — неправильный глагол) — везти, отвозить, править (машиной), вести (машину).
• me — меня.
• to — в.
• the — определенный артикль — этот, конкретный, известный, местный, городской, наш…
• airport — аэропорт
• with — с.
• the — определенный артикль — эти, конкретные…
• window — окно.
• to roll (rolled) — скатывать, свертывать, вертеться, крутиться.
• down — вниз.
• roll down — фразовый глагол, нужного значения в тезаурусе нет, в этом случае переводится, исходя из понимания и знания реалий текущей ситуации.

Моя мама отвезла меня в этот аэропорт с этими окнами скатанными/свернутыми вниз.

Стефани прямо говорит, что мама отвезла в аэропорт. А вот в аэропорт «мы с мамой приехали» — это уже в фильме, когда их Фил отвез!
В книге же про Фила не говорится ничего в этот момент.

К тому же по смыслу, логике и использованному глаголу «to drive» вроде бы ясно, что речь идет о машине; то есть в предложении явно опущено одно подразумеваемое словосочетание.
Например, предложение могло бы быть таким:
My mother drove me to the airport IN OUR CAR with the windows rolled down.

Тогда вариант более литературного перевода следующий:
Мама отвезла меня в аэропорт на нашей машине с опущенными окнами.

Существует еще одно значение в переводе для слова «with» — «причем», если как следует покапаться, найти можно. Тогда.

Мама отвезла меня в аэропорт на машине с открытыми окнами.
Мама отвезла меня в аэропорт на машине, причем окна были опущены.

И, наконец, если хочется «повыеживаться», вот такой перевод.

Мама отвезла меня в аэропорт. Окна в машине были открыты (всю дорогу).

Why do we “roll” the car windows down, instead of “slide”

Rolling implies rotation and translation. Cranking implies the motion people used to do before power windows and Sliding is what actually happens to the window.

When and why did people start using the expression «roll the windows down,» instead of something more descriptive?

I think the answer is in your question; rolling was the motion applied to windows before power windows. They did not physically apply force so as to directly slide them down, i.e. pushing them down with their hands, instead, they rolled (rotated) the lever, which in turn caused the windows to raise/lower. It is simply the description of the actual force being applied, not the effects of said force.

It’s a reasonable puzzle and baffled me as a child.

As you say rolling is rotation and translation. Rolling up however means winding something round a spool by rotating the spool (or winding the thing round the spool). Sometimes the spool will be translated, but usually it will be fixed. An efficent way of rolling something up is to crank a winch (using the law of the lever). Ropes on boats are rolled up this way. So it’s plausible that rolling something up became synonymous with turning a crank, even in cases where nothing was wound around a spool. And rolling something down became the opposite action.

If you look up the definition of roll, you will see it involves a movement on an axis:

As for crank, the same source states that the movement involved is made in order to start an engine. Therefore, it is more logical that roll a window up/down will be used.

Although I think originally car windows were “let down”, over time the common mechanism was to rotate a lever using a “window handle”, so the common usage became to “roll down” (the physical motion).

Whereas now, the common mechanism is to push an electronic toggle button. Perhaps the new emerging common usage will again return to “let down”.

Maybe it came from the horse and buggy days when they had cloth covers for the windows and they literally had to roll the windows up? Just a theory.

I always assumed it was rolling up and down blinds on the original coaches that had no glass just material over the ‘window’ openings?
