Pregnant Mass. Woman Jumps from Second-Story Window to Escape Boyfriend Holding Her Captive: Police
Matthew McAuliffe has been charged with assault to murder, aggravated assault & battery, strangulation, assault & battery on an intimate partner, and kidnapping
A Massachusetts woman allegedly jumped out of a second-story window to escape an abusive boyfriend who had held her captive for about a week, authorities allege.
Matthew McAuliffe of Quincy, Mass., was arrested on Wednesday afternoon. According to a statement from the Quincy police department, he has been charged with assault to murder, aggravated assault & battery, strangulation, assault & battery on an intimate partner, and kidnapping. He is being held without bond pending a dangerousness hearing.
Police say the woman’s life was saved by alert neighbors.
«Officers were dispatched to a residence after an emergency 911 call that a female was outside screaming for help,» police said in the statement. «Officers arrived within minutes of the call and observed that all was quiet. They immediately began speaking with neighbors and learned that a male party had approached the female from behind, covered her mouth, and forcibly dragged her into an apartment.»
Authorities forced entry into the apartment, according to the statement.
«Officers located a female victim and her boyfriend inside the residence,» the police statement says. «Officers immediately began rendering aid to the victim who was unresponsive, lying motionless on the bed. She had agonal breathing and red marks on her throat.»
Agonal breathing is a medical term used to describe gasping for air or struggling to breathe. It is often a symptom of a severe medical emergency or injury.
«Detectives learned that the victim’s boyfriend had held her against her will for the last week,» the statement alleges. «Fearing for her safety, she jumped from a second-story window to escape.»
According to court documents obtained by WCVB, the woman allegedly told McAuliffe she was pregnant, but was not sure what to do. She then alleged that McAuliffe began acting paranoid and told her she «could not leave» the home and had to «get rid of» the unborn baby.
The alleged victim later locked herself in the bathroom and jumped out the second-floor window to get help, documents allege.
According to the Boston Globe, McAuliffe has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His next hearing is on February 9. His attorney has not returned a call for comment.
Carscoops
Car thieves have been known to target people at gas stations, but one woman refused to be a victim.
According to WSB, a woman stopped at a Texaco gas station in College Park, Georgia to fill up her Mercedes.
As you can see in the video, another car pulls up alongside her vehicle. A passenger then quickly exits and makes a dash for the Mercedes.
The women saw this happen, so she jumped through the open passenger side window of her car. The thief wasn’t expecting this, so he quickly retreated to the getaway vehicle and sped away.
The station talked to the woman, who said she’s heard about these thefts in the past. As a result, she was paying attention and noticed something was off when the other car pulled up alongside her Mercedes.
She said “I didn’t have a chance to think,” other than “he’s not about to take my stuff.” The woman added it was “mind-blowing” that a person would attempt to steal her car while she was right next to it.
The woman’s face reportedly “got scraped” from jumping into the car, but she’s happy her quick thinking prevented the theft. Following the incident, she called police and they’re still searching for a suspect.
While these thefts happen pretty fast, there are a few things you can do to prevent becoming a victim. One of the most important is shutting off the engine and locking your doors while refueling. Drivers should also pay attention to their surrounding and never confront thieves, because your life is ultimately worth more than your car.

Search continues for man with violent criminal history
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A woman who was trying to escape a violent situation jumped out of an apartment window with an infant in her arms and now authorities are trying to locate the man believed to be responsible, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they went to Tzadik Millennium Apartments off Rio Grande Avenue around noon on Thursday after receiving 911 calls from witnesses who saw the woman jump and then hide under a truck with the baby still in her arms.
The woman is recovering at a hospital. The baby boy was not injured.

Orange County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Christian Marrero said within a few minutes of the 911 calls, deputies surrounded the apartment in an attempt to take 39-year-old Terrance Givens into custody.
The standoff ended around 5 p.m. when authorities realized Givens was no longer inside the unit.
“Unfortunately he could be anywhere at this point,” Marrero said.
Authorities said they’re still investigating what happened in the apartment that caused the woman to jump but they said they do know that some sort of violence occurred.
“She fled the apartment trying to escape from him, with her child,” Marrero said.
The relationship between Givens and the victim is unknown. Givens is not the father of the child, according to Marrero.
Authorities said Givens is a convicted felon with a violent criminal history.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.

Reports of Covid patients leaping from Ukrainian hospital windows in tragic suicide bids as health system ‘on brink of collapse’
The patient, said to be a 56-year old with a history of mental illness, was reportedly attending a doctor’s appointment on the fourth floor of the institution, but never entered the office. Disturbing pictures from the scene appear to show a body covered by a sheet near the walls of the hospital.
In more tragic news from the country, Ukrainian media reported earlier that a woman who had recently given birth similarly leapt from a hospital window after having been diagnosed with coronavirus. This incident also occurred in the Zaporozhe region, but the hospital claims she survived the fall and was put under the care of psychiatrists.
The influential Ukrainian news site Korrespondent also reports that two coronavirus patients at different hospitals in the capital, Kiev, killed themselves by jumping from windows, only a day apart from each other.
Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Minister for Health Maxim Stepanov warned that the country’s health system, which has faced decades of underinvestment, was “close to disaster” after a rise in Covid-19 cases. Only two weeks later, Stepanov himself tested positive for the virus and was forced to isolate.
Europe’s poorest country recorded a record number of confirmed infections on Thursday, with close to 15,000 Ukrainians being diagnosed with Covid-19. However, concerns over a lack of testing mean that the true figure may be far higher.
