Connect a controller
If you have a Surface Studio model, Surface Book 2 15”, or a Surface Book 3 15″ and an Xbox Wireless Controller or an Xbox One Wireless Controller, here’s how to connect your controller to your Surface.
On your controller, press and hold the Xbox button and the Connect button to make the controller discoverable. (The Connect button is on the top of the controller.)
On your Surface, select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
Select Add Bluetooth or other device > Everything else. Choose the Xbox Wireless Controller and follow additional instructions if they appear, then select Done.
If you have another Surface device, here’s how to connect an Xbox One Wireless Controller.
If you’re having problems connecting your Xbox controller to your Surface, see Connect and troubleshoot Bluetooth on your Xbox One Wireless Controller for troubleshooting info.
Find games to play in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store
Select Start button > Xbox to see the games that you already have. Or go to the Store to get more games and install the ones you have on other devices.
Stream from Xbox One
If you have an Xbox One console, here’s how to stream games and TV to your Surface.
How to stream Xbox One games to your Windows 10 Surface or Surface Book
With Windows 10, your Wi-Fi connected Surface becomes a remote second screen so you can play in every room of your house.
Imagine this scenario: Your kids are determined to get to the next level of Halo 5: Guardians on their Xbox One, but you want to watch a movie on the family room TV. Avoid family anguish by lending them your Surface or Surface Book so they can continue the battle in the next room.
Thanks to Windows 10, you can stream your Xbox One games and dashboard to your Surface or Surface Book as long as you stay on the same home network.
Step 1: Turn on Game Streaming on your Xbox One
Enable Game Streaming on your Xbox One by going to Settings, selecting preferences, and checking “Allow game streaming to other devices (beta)” as well as either “Enable the SmartGlass connection from any SmartGlass device” or “Only from profiles signed in on this Xbox.”
Step 2: Launch the Xbox app on your Surface
- Under apps, launch the Xbox app.
- Sign into your Xbox Live account.
- Select Connect from the panel on the left side.
- The Xbox app will scan your home network for available Xbox One consoles. Select the name of the console you want to connect. (If you have multiple consoles, rename them from the pre-named “MyXboxOne” to tell them apart.)
- Once connected, you’ll see options for streaming, power, and media remotes.
Step 3: Connect an Xbox One controller to your Surface
You have two options:
- Connect the USB charging cable of your Xbox One controller to your Surface.
- Plug in a Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows to play your games without wires. This wireless adapter can handle up to eight controllers, four chat headsets, and two stereo headsets.
- Plug a chat headset into your Xbox One controller or USB headset into your Surface before you begin streaming. Be sure to make the headset your default playback and recording device by going into the Control Panel of your Surface, selecting Hardware and Sound, and then opening Manage Audio Devices.
Step 4: Start playing!
Once your Xbox One and Surface are connected, tap the Stream option next to the name of your Xbox One in the Xbox app. Your Surface should then bring up the Xbox One interface exactly how it appears on your Xbox One!
At this point, you should switch to the Xbox One controller to navigate the Xbox One interface. Just choose a game and start playing like you would on your Xbox One.
For best results
To get the best possible play experience, we recommend using a fast 5GHz wireless network and locating both your Xbox One and Surface in the same room as your wireless router.

Getting the Most Out of Your Xbox One and Microsoft Surface
If you’ve got an Xbox One, you probably already know that, in addition to playing great games, the console offers a wide range of built-in entertainment and media options. But did you know how nicely the Xbox One interacts with your Surface tablet? If you’re a fan of both, you owe it to yourself to take a closer look at the “Xbox One Tips and Tricks” video from Sean Ong.
Sean, a 28 year-old clean energy engineer, husband, and father of two from Seattle, Wash., has been making videos about Surface for a while now, including his “Why I Love My Surface 2” video that’s garnered over 225,000 views since it went up in November of 2013. However, it wasn’t until recently that he decided to take a stab at a video incorporating both his Xbox One and Surface. “Many of my viewers were most interested in the Xbox integration part of my Surface videos, so I decided to make a new video that was more Xbox-centric. I was blown away at the many possibilities of having the HDMI input on the Xbox One.”
As you’ll see in the video at the top of this article, Sean provides a number of tips and tricks that the average user might not have known were possible without a good deal of internet digging. While he discovered many of them on his own simply by experimenting (or “playing around,” as he puts it) with his Xbox One, he did have a bit of outside help. “I learned about the TV converter box from onlysublime – who I mention in my video and provide a link to in my video description. I also learned about the home button double-tap trick and keyboard trick from others on Reddit.”
While there are a ton of great tips in the video, the big question is which one is Sean’s favorite. “Hands down, it’s the ability to cast audio and video to my Xbox One (the “play to” functionality) from my Surface. I use that all the time!” Perhaps not surprisingly given his love of technology, he also really likes all of the built-in TV functionality the Xbox One offers. “Controlling over the air TV with my voice is pretty sweet, too. Right now, the bulk of my time on the Xbox One is actually spent on TV, movies, music, and apps – but I’m forecasting a dramatic shift to gaming as more titles become available in 2014 and beyond!”
It’s clear that Sean is a fan of both his Surface and his Xbox One, but we couldn’t help asking if we should expect a Windows Phone video in the near future to round out the device trifecta. “My wife just got a Nokia Windows Phone and I have to admit – it’s really tempting. I love to tinker with technology – so she’s wise to keep her phone away from me for now.”
Hopefully Sean’s video taught you a few new ways to get the most out of the combined power of your Xbox One and Surface. To keep up-to-date on Sean’s video offerings, be sure to subscribe to his YouTube channel or follow him on Twitter.

Use Surface device as a second remote screen to play Xbox One games
You can avoid family bickering and allow your child to resume his last session of favorite game on a screen different from your TV as Microsoft Surface powered by Windows 10 allows them to stream Xbox One games remotely from the gaming console to any Windows 10 PC on your home network. To be precise, the feature offers the luxury of leaving your living room and play your favorite Xbox One games anywhere around your home with access to your home network.
Use Wi-Fi Connected Windows 10 Surface to play Xbox One games
The first step involves turning on Game Streaming on your Xbox One.
For this, enable Game Streaming on your Xbox One by navigating to Settings, selecting preferences, and checking the option reading as “Allow game streaming to other devices (beta)” as well as either “Enable the SmartGlass connection from any SmartGlass device” or “Only from profiles signed in on this Xbox.”
After having done this, launch the Xbox app on your Surface. Then, under apps, launch the Xbox app.
Next, sign into your Xbox Live account and select Connect from the panel on the left side. When confirmed, the action will scan your home network for available Xbox One consoles.
If the name appears in the list, select the name of the console you would like to connect. Once the connection is established, you’ll see options available for streaming, power, and media remotes.
The final step involves connecting your Xbox One controller to your Surface. You can do this via 2 methods,
- Connect your Microsoft Surface device to the USB charging cable of your Xbox One controller.
- Plug in a Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows to play your games without wires. This wireless adapter can handle up to eight controllers.
That’s all to it! Once connected, tap the Stream option visible adjacent to the name of your Xbox One in the Xbox app. You should see the interface on your surface similar to the one displayed on your Xbox One gaming console.
Now, select the desired game and start playing!
